Ann was a dear friend, and without her, many of the people who have succeeded in the arts in Jacksonville would have had lesser lives and chances.

Ann Hyman, who spent a quarter century as a columnist and editor for the Lifestyle section of The Florida Times-Union, died Monday following complications from surgery. She was 72.

Mrs. Hyman, who was also the author of three books, wrote authoritatively about the arts, including music, theater and literature, from the time she joined the Times-Union as a classical music writer in 1977 until her retirement as book editor and columnist in 2001.

“She wrote an awful lot about the way in which the arts have a life-changing impact,” said Robert Arleigh White, executive director of the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville. “She was treasured and her opinion was much sought after.

“I don’t know that people always liked what she wrote, but if you made it onto her radar screen, that was important.”
