Jacksonville gaining educated millennials fast, but still has catching up to do

Think tank City Observatory released a report this week on which of the nation's 51 largest metros are best at attracting a young, educated workforce — and Jacksonville's numbers are a mixed bag.

Between 2000 and 2012, the population of 25- to 34-year-olds with a college degree in Jacksonville grew nearly 45 percent, from 35,653 to 51,615.

In terms of growth rate, that's good — more than Tampa's 41 percent and Orlando's 43 percent growth. But the overall numbers are small, about half of Tampa's millennial population of 104,532 and Orlando's 96,646.

On the upside, though, Jacksonville's growth goes beyond what would be expected just by the number of millennials increasing nationwide, with the city seeing its population of educated young professionals growing about 25 percent more than the average nationwide population growth of the age group
