Just this morning my laptop has started showing a box at the top of the screen every time I load a new page or refresh a page on the MJ site, other sites working fine. Anyone else have this issue or know a remedy? Assuming by verbage it is something with GPS or WiFi location??

White box, top center screen, option to close box or click "OK" none of which does anything. Using Google Chrome browser.

Tell me your location or I will annoy you to death...  8)

Try another Browser maybe? MJ likes MS Internet Explorer. For example, I have trouble with graphics and videos on my iPad, but fine on a PC.

The video issue is the same for me on all mobile devices, just shows a "plugin needed" overlay. It could be a video of two dogs humping & you'd never know it unless you're on a regular desktop.

I *think* its because any youtube video that gets embedded into these forums (instead of just posting a link) is using old outdated flash tags. That...needs to change. Flash is dead, guys.

Ended up logging out of MJ and logging back in (usually I stay logged in forever), that seems to have reset whatever the issue was. Never had that happen before.

Agreed and I always have same issue, rarely am I on a laptop/desktop. 99% of the time I am on phone/tablet so this might have been an issue from months ago.

edit: Maybe something for the moderators/exec board to consider, if the majority is on mobile devices ... I love the site, but the mobile version is so 1996 geocities its irritating. Thats why I use Chrome, so I can click "Request Desktop Site" and actually view the proper way on mobile.

^True. Although I don't think embedded videos get fixed even in desktop mode when on mobile since they're using that old coding to embed them (since flash is a no go on any mobile platform). You can see this if you reply quote someone who has posted an embedded video, they used a "[flash]" tag to do it. It sucks, guys & needs to be nuked asap in favor of proper web standards for the post-mobile world. At this point, just posting a simple URL of the video would be doing everyone, on all platforms, a huge favor instead of embedding them.

Yeah, the mobile site has many things like that which don't mesh well. Speaking of quoting a reply, can't do it on mobile. There's just a single reply button & nothing else. Also noticed a lot of text gets jumbled on mobile (like any main headline or story text that has quotations, or some other symbols, they don't translate & turn into garbled mess), etc. There's a lot, I just can't think of everything now.

I'm having the same issue. The site asked for geolocation on every page (using chrome). The above is the continued response after rejecting it. Does not happen on main site, but does on the forums, and occurs in Chrome, IE, and Firefox. And since I have rejected it, it gives me an error message every time a page loads.

Not sure why you guys need my location, particularly on the non-mobile version of the site, but it is a pain.

Same, but it doesn't go away after logging out for me...

yup, came back today and this time logging out didn't work. The weird part is it doesn't do so on my mobile devices, which you would think would ask for location services.  :o

Its probably a lone ad asking for location services (which no way in hell I'm giving them). I find some of the ads on MJ pretty intrusive (auto playing videos, etc).

I understand its a way to pay the bills, but too many of these types can be a real turnoff. Along with unnecessarily forcing a photo based story to be 10 pages long.
