Well I guess I'm going to carry some kind of weapon on me for now on.

The blatant racist remarks in the newspaper and a few on MJ make me want to go knockout a few folks myself. This IS NOT a Black, White, Oriental, Indian, Hispanic or any other race thing, this is pure immature bravado, gang inspired, machismo lunacy at it's worst. My take as a man, is that this stuff stems from the same lack of sense involved in blowing up mailboxes or knocking over trash cans, only taken to the 'next level.' It is deadly dangerous and like any cancer, once it is given a toehold it may lead to crimes on a much grander scale. The fact that it seems to be primarily perpetrated by young Black 'yutes,' (a true southron of any race isn't going to be involved  ;)) is as unfortunate as a bunch of blonde haird, blue eyed, Hitlerjugend thugs. Jacksonville is the city that defied the state segregation orders, and when they were forced on us, we became home to the streetcar line where Whites sat in the back, Jacksonville as a whole, is better then this.

Ah, the Knockout Game. The criminal manifestation of the Streisand Effect.

Thanks, Ock. We are better than this.
When we call it a "game" it makes something very dangerous into fun. We might as well say the Attempted Murder Game.

I thought orientals were rugs and Asians were people.

yes.  from the old words

Oriental - East
Occidental - West

both are simply directions.

Asia is a geographical place.  So people from that bit of geography are Asians.  As in Europeans or Americans.

Its just good grammar.

Alright, Mr. Journalist, have you even read the AP Style Book?

The AP style book you linked says exactly the same thing Stephen did.

Orient, Oriental
Do not use when referring to East Asian nations and their peoples. Asian is the acceptable term for an inhabitant of those regions. Oriental rug is standard. See nationalities and races and race.

Oh, potato, tomato, potato, tomato, y'all obviously have me confused with someone that gives a damn about language.  Considering that I know several local families of blond haired, blue eyed, Caucasians that are constantly harangued for not being African-American even though they really are African-American! I'll chunk the whole thing into the waste basket of politically correct bull shit. As an added incentive, try using another language exclusively for 5 years and then pop back into English... HA!

I never claimed to be a 'journalist,' however brother Stephen fits that description pretty well. Besides being a rail planner, my claim to fame is that of a historian-story teller and author, as such I have reserved the right to coin phrases, make up words, use southern slang, write in dialect and generally abuse the hell out of the language  if I please. If your geography is so weak is to not know the general racial makeup of the Orient or Occidental peoples then perhaps you should add a sociology class to go along with your word crafting?

Quote"Anyone who can only think of one way to spell a word obviously lacks imagination. I don't see any use in having a uniform and arbitrary way of spelling words. We might as well make all clothes alike and cook all dishes alike. Sameness is tiresome; variety is pleasing."

Ok sooooo, on the tails of "we are better than this" how about we steer this one back around to being about people getting knocked the eff out... rather than being about race at all. Mkay?
