China considers high speed rail link to North America

BEJING — The Chinese government railway agency is giving consideration a high speed rail link from China to the U.S., multiple news outlets are reporting.

Wang Mengshu, of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, says the line would cross Siberia, the Bering Strait, Alaska, and Canada to reach the mainland U.S. The route would begin in China's northeast and cross the Bering Strait via an undersea tunnel. The tunnel would be about 125 miles in length and would use the same technology as the proposed Fuijan-Taiwan rail tunnel, the Washington Post reports.

According to the reports, the entire 8,000-mile project would be funded and constructed by China.

Further details of the project have yet to be finalized.
