Super Bowl organizers vote to ban tailgating

BRISTOL, Conn. -- There will be no upgrading to "grill class" this year.

ESPN is reporting that there will be no tailgating parties allowed at the Super Bowl this year in New Jersey.

In a news conference, the game's committee CEO Al Kelly said fans will "not be able to take out a lounge chair ... or a grill."

The news conference was held Monday to announce only there are only a couple ways to get to the game for the 80,000 ticketholders.

The committee said a charter bus service that will cost $51 will pick up and drop off passengers at nine locations around the region.

Organizers are calling this "the first mass transit Super Bowl."

Officials said there will be fewer than 13,000 parking spots available for fans.

"You will be allowed to have food in your car and have drink in your car," Kelly said. "And provided you're in the boundaries of a single parking space, you'll be able to eat or drink right next to your car. However you're not going to be able to take out a lounge chair, you're not going to be able to take out a grill and you're not going to be able to take up more than one parking space. And it'll all be watched very carefully."

The committee said nobody will be permitted to walk to the game.

"You can get your hotel to drop you off at one of the New Jersey Transit locations or get the shuttle to take you to a Fan Express location, but you cannot walk," Kelly said.

The game is Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium. It's the first cold-weather Super Bowl played outdoors.

Why ban walking to the game?  Can you ride a bike?

Hopefully this enforcement will be contained for New Jersey, and not any other US venues. Notice all of the dumb rules throughout the entire state of football comes under the commish Roger Goodell's watch....TBH, I don't even know why NJ/NY got a Super Bowl; Logistical nightmares with the extra people, crappy weather etc.

This is real, though its almost worthy of the onion. As for the no walking (and probably biking too), as I understand it the stadium region is suburban and walking to it would require miles along the highway/turnpike...so it's a safety issue for pedestrians especially in large numbers.

Doesn't really matter, there are such few tickets for fans of the teams anyways.  Most tickets are used by the corporate sponsors on their clients, etc.
