Councilman Don Redman: A Guest We Forgot Not to Invite

My first encounter with City Councilman Don Redmon was on the sidewalk, November of 2011 in front of City Hall as a member of Occupy Jacksonville. He was a rather forgettable individual, short, round, and from what I remember, a somewhat agreeable individual who seemed to be interested in understanding why people would stand in protest in front of a local government building in protest of its institutions being rapidly bought and sold in the name of oligarchy...

You have his name spelled right in the title but the body of your article has his last name as Redmon, it is Redman.  Just pointing this out because he is the focus of the article.

The interesting things that you point to about Redman and his extreme and narrow minded view of Jacksonville is the underlying reality that he is just one of a multitude who hold the same attitudes about the who and what Jacksonville should be, who Jacksonville should embrace and who the dangerous rabble is.  Unfortunately, the dangerous rabble is most often just another average citizen who doesn't fit the preconceived ideal of an old southern hard core conservative.  This is the essence of the southern GOB mindset that has long held Jacksonville back.

Sorry about the spelling mistake. One good thing about him being term-limited is that he won't be around much longer. However, I wonder who will take his place. That kind of concerns me.

I make spelling mistakes and typo's all of the time and most here are forgiving so know I wasn't trying to embarrass.  I just wanted to share with you that I noticed since the article was about one man.

Redman is indeed term limited.  I think the trick for Jacksonville voters next time around is to try and identify individuals for office who are not only competent, but more moderate in their views and judgements about what will help Jacksonville grow and best meet the needs of the city.  Of course those sort of folks need to be on the ballot and so far for the next cycle, I only see a handful of names that might point toward positive change.

I know. It's no problem :) You're right about people electing folks on the basis of competence rather than emotion.

I'm not a fan of his religious ideologies, but at least Redman is willing to admit there are things he doesn't know much about....try getting that from Schellenberg
