Deepening Ft. Lauderdale's harbor would cost less than half of Jacksonville port

Not surprising, given the physical location of each port's facilities.

The cost of deepening the ship channel at Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale would be $313 million, according to a report issued Thursday by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The tentatively selected plan for the Ft. Lauderdale port would deepen the harbor to 48 feet from 42 feet.

The cost would be less than half the expense of deepening Jacksonville's ship channel.

The tentatively selected plan for Jacksonville's port would deepen the channel to 47 feet from 40 feet at an estimated cost of $733 million.
