Downtown Signage Failure

Anyone have any ideas on how to enforce poorly maintained signage in the downtown core? I've noticed some glaring examples in the recent months, most notably the 11E rooftop signage (which has been partially dark for years now) and the intermittent blue neon at the Greyhound Bus Station. Also, the 7-11 neon sign on Forsyth has been broken since the store was opened last year.

The city claims it's not their problem, and suggests contacting the owners directly. The property management companies only give false promises.

I assume someone here on the boards might have an answer to this downtown embarrassment... which one of you has John Rood on speed dial?

Joshua, the city has a signage ordinance on the books but I believe it only covers the types of signage allowed and not the upkeep of the signage.  You can call legislative services and ask them for the ordinance number and then view it online.  Unless there is specific requirements regarding sign maintenance it will indeed come down to the owners making the repairs.  What you can do however is contact "Downtown Vision" and speak to Terry Lawrence about it.  Since that group is specifically interested in downtown issues and upkeep, she or the group may be able to motivate the property owners in this circumstance.  Also call Don Redman on the City Council  630-1394 and speak with his aide Scott and let him know about this issue.  Downtown is Don's district and the poor maintenance of signage should trouble him.
