QuoteA massive tornado ripped through Moore, Okla., Monday afternoon, leveling a huge swath of a residential area in the suburb of Oklahoma City.

Video footage from KFOR-TV showed houses, businesses and at least two schools completely demolished, with cars strewn about.

Police and emergency crews have begun to respond, but debris has clogged roadways. There is no tally yet on injuries or deaths, but news anchors said significant casualties are expected.
At least one large fire has broken out amid the rubble.

The twister is already being compared to the May 3, 1999 storm that ripped through Moore and killed almost 150 people and caused more the $1 billion in damage. This one, possibly an F5, the largest classification, was a bigger tornado.

More than 170,000 people could be in its path. The National Weather Service issued a tornado emergency warning for the metropolitan area of Oklahoma City, which includes several suburbs. The 2-mile-wide cyclone may bring heavy damage and loss of life.
