Tipping Salon Owners?

Etiquette says that you do not (and are not expected to) tip the owner of a barbershop or hair salon when they cut or style your hair, because they are the owner they no longer work for tips. Also because they receive income from their employees who rent a workstation.  If you are a barbershop or hair salon stylist/owner, what do you say about that?  I haven't dared yet to try this in Jacksonville.

I tend to agree with you...don't tip if they own the salon. My significant other says otherwise, and tips.

Equitte may say that, but I still tip.  It takes a lot of money to run a business...rent, insurance, etc.  If I would tip the person who rents a booth, I think I should tip the owner too.  But that's just me.

Thats generally the etiquette within the business itself.

No tipping generally applies to hoteliers, restauranteurs and night club owners, where it can be considered an insult.  I know that most of the restauranteurs that I know feel demoted by people that they are trying to personally treat as guests when the guest tries to tip.  It takes away from the gesture on the part of the restauranteur.

But hair cutting is a hands on kind of business and tips are part of the game.  Not tipping is generally an invitation to have subtly shitty haircuts.
(Not tipping is generally an invitation to have subtly shitty haircuts.) BS! I have been going to the same Hair Salon to have my haircut for well over 17 years! I have never tipped and the Owner has NEVER given me a bad haircut! Now around Christmas time I will give a bottle of wine or some art work. But this is done out of the friendship I have with the Owner.

I've been going to the same barber for well over a decade, giving her pictures of haircuts to copy, very good tips, and still only got maybe 4 excellent haircuts that whole time - her consistency seems to depend upon her mood and what's going on in her own life.  I've really been patient but now I'll have to go elsewhere, though it won't fit the budget so well.  Thanks for your insight and would still love to hear from anyone else, especially if they are in the profession.  Another problem is that when I have found someone with amazing talent, they move out of state before too long.  I almost feel as if I need to formally interview them from now on.

But where does it stop?  Do you tip your Dentist?  While that's somewhat rhetorical, why not the Hygienist or Assistant?  A Flight Attendant on a plane?  Is it assumed that Barbers, Hairdressers, etc. are generally a tip driven profession?  What about someone at Supercuts?  Are they on a Server's wage?
