Claude Nolan Building: on city's demo list?

Thanks to a friend on facebook:

The City of Jax has a Request for Proposal out for demolition of 18 buildings. Included in the 18 is Item 6 which is 937 Main Street N., the Claude Nolan Cadillac Building, built by Nolan in 1910, designed by Henry J. Klutho.

Landmark status for this building is being heard this afternoon at the HPC meeting. We'll be there and let you know what happens.

Commissioners voted to approve the landmark status and send it to city council for approval.

Don't get too excited. As of last night, once this building is landmarked, it will be easier for MCC to demolish, not harder.

If MCC sees anything they can call "extreme and imminent threat to public safety" in any stretch of the imagination, it will be demolished without any review solely on Ms Scott's word. Remember, it is already on her list and still being sent out for bid.

Today, all that Landmark status does is make it harder for the owner to work on his building, it no longer offers any protection to that building.

You are right, it shouldn't be. But all it takes right now is for Ms Scott, Chief of Municipal Code Compliance, to state she believes it to be an emergency and it can and will come down. No one will stop it, no one within the city can or will question it. A case may be won in civil court, but the building will be gone and never be rebuilt. But hey, take heart, the mighty Historic Preservation Commission and Staff will be there to make sure that if a new building is ever built there, the windows will be in exactly the right place!
