Ryan Rummel: Novelty Drawings To Amuse Bar Patrons

Painter Ryan Rummel is pretty much the very definition of an outsider artist- Painter, craftsman, artisan and for the past several years the owner of a hipster indie club called (inexplicably) TSI.  Educated at one of the most respectable art schools of the south (before their controversial takeover a few years ago) the Atlanta College of Art he has lived in some of the edgiest neighborhoods of the southeast while quietly pursuing his simple, elegantly beautiful design and art projects.  After thirteen years in the trenches of Downtown Jacksonville and Springfield his new series: Novelty Drawings to Amuse Bar Patrons is attracting attention in both his adopted hometown and NYC.  Join us for more details after the jump.

If Ryan Rummel was "educated at one of the most respectable art schools of the south," then I'd hardly consider him "pretty much the very definition of an outsider artist."

I know this is going to open me up for a typical Stephen Dare broadside, but from my understanding, "outsider artist" is usually a term reserved for artists who are untrained or who exist on the outside fringes of society (like crazy people or homeless people or children, even).

Ryan's an artist. He owns a nightclub that even has art exhibits from time to time (or used to).

Am I missing something? And if I am, can you let me know nicely?

"outsider artist" means outside the gallery scene and established world of art patronage and show schedules.

Unless you are connected to Bruce Dempsey and the J. Johnson Gallery in Jville, you are pretty much an outsider to that world.

It doesnt mean 'self taught', which is a seperate genre of outsider art.

I personally collect self taught urban painters, from pretty much around the country, and I love the phenomenon.  But in a Venn Diagram, self taught would be an intersecting circle with outsider artist.

All dandelions are flowers, but not all flowers are dandelions, etc.....

Thanks Stephen. I always heard the term used in reference to people like Howard Finster (notable for his work with REM, among others).

Adam, you are right. On the mark.
Just as you said, a majority of outsider artists suffer from mental illness. Others are self trained, separated by their choice from schooled artists.
Ryan is a well accomplished artist in his own right, due to the personal diligence of an obviously well thought out art education.
From Wikipedia:

Outsider art has emerged as a successful art marketing category (an annual Outsider Art Fair has taken place in New York since 1993). The term is sometimes misapplied as a catch-all marketing label for art created by people outside the mainstream "art world," regardless of their circumstances or the content of their work.
