[Stone Librande is the lead designer of SimCity]: "In an interesting statement on car culture, Librande decided that if they made parking realistic, so much of the screen would be dedicated to asphalt that it’d be too boring to play."

Are there any other city-simulation games like SimCity? I used to play railroad simulation games like Railroad Tycoon.

Cities XL isn't awful, but entirely lacking in creativity and soul. The old Impressions Games developments are pretty fun in their own way (Pharaoh, the Caesar series), but much much less flexibility and creativity than SimCity offers. The new SimCity releases tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to it!  My only problem will be fighting its seriously addictive nature.  I've pulled a few all nighters because I couldn't convinve myself to just wait until tomorrow.....  and then those damned natural disatsers!  You gotta fix things up before you can quit or your Sims might hate you! :)

I'd suggest waiting a couple days before trying to play it. It's almost unplayable right now due to server issues and internet-only DRM.

I can't wait to play!

I'm hoping my modest knowledge of planning and design that I have gathered from metro-jax will help me stay out of trouble in the game, but the number of layers of data that you have to keep within safe levels seems pretty daunting.
