A new proposal for downtown redevelopment

George Santayana said, “Those who remember the past can find clever ways to repeat it.”  There’s a clever way to repeat the past when it comes to redeveloping the downtown.  Millions of taxpayer dollars have been poured into it, but to no avail.  Install as many historic streetlights and signs, brick pavers and crosswalk accents as you want, people just don’t want to go there.  It’s time to consult the Sociopaths’ Handbook.  The 1901 Moss Fire successfully turned the urban core around.  Who’s to say it wouldn’t work again.  Moss Fire Two would clear the path for starting over and implementing true market-based solutions.

Chris, I know many of us enjoy your blog, but starting these periodic new threads to plug it is clearly starting to chafe people. It would help if you'd make your posts to one thread, with a title clearly indicating that these are just blog updates, not really "A new proposal for downtown redevelopment" and the like.
Do you believe that when the blue jay or another bird sings and the body is trembling, that is a signal that people are coming or something important is about to happen?

Ocklawaha

REALLY?  Who needs matches and flames when you have our city council?

I don't really have a problem with it...he definitely adds something to the forum...don't get what the big deal is?

If an annoying self promoter is something, then yes, he does add something.  I agree that if he were to put his posts in one thread that was accurately named, it would be less of an issue.  Granted, this blog entry was better than most of his previous ones, but the title was very misleading.

I don't have a problem with it. I'd have even less of a problem with it if the posts were all on one thread with a clear name, as would, I'd think those it annoys.

Hi, Captain Zissou, Jagsdrew, and Tacachale: I appreciate the gentle tones of your remonstrances. Granted, the pieces on the blog are satire, which doesn't exactly fit in with the more serious dialogue occurring on Metro Jacksonville's forum. Reading satire requires some patience and doesn't necessarily lend itself to the quick back-and-forth that usually occurs in this forum. Here's why I post my blog links in this forum.  My first 11 years in Jacksonville, I didn't know Metro Jacksonville existed.  I only knew about the Florida Times-Union.  For a decade I read the "Letters from readers" section of the T-U and wondered what kind of a weird, behind-the-times town Jax was?  In my frustration, I started the blog to vent some of my anger.  The voice of Lemule Blogiver is intended to mimic the hidebound, backward-looking mentality that is so at home on the T-U's Letters page.  Last year I finally stumbled upon the Metro Jacksonville and found it incredibly refreshing that there were at least some relatively like-minded individuals in this town.  Metro Jacksonville feels like home.  It's existence cheers me up.  I have been posting these blog entries on the M.J. forum now for about eight months.  In my defense I can say that by this point many people on the M.J. forum have an idea what's coming when they see "Rippley408" (as in "Rippley Believe It or Not").  Obviously a number of people, including yourselves, don't believe my posts are appropriate here, and I understand why you think so.  Still, a large number DO go ahead and click on the blog link. So, perhaps a compromise is in order.  I don't know if a single link under which they are all posted is the answer, but in the future I may limit my postings to the Opinion section, unless you have a better suggestion.  All best, Chris Gabbard

I love your posts.  I read them all the time.  What different is it from people who post links that support their political beliefs?

Thanks, jcjohnpant.  I appreciate it.  From now on I'll post the "Blogiver's Travels" links in the "Break Room (Take a break from all the seriousness of running the city)."  Blogiver's Travels isn't to everyone's taste, and it probably would be more appropriate for the blog links to appear in the Break Room than in the serious sections.

Just another piece of friendly advice:

To prevent from pissing off the natives all you would have to do is add, "Blogiver's......" into the title.  I understand that the name of the game is page views, but at least we wouldn't get our hopes up for a juicy piece of news only to be blindsided by a juicy piece of satire.
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
