Legislature approves tax cuts

TALLAHASSEE - Florida legislators made history Thursday with an unprecedented property tax cut package that may soon slash local tax bills and the government services they fund.

The House adjourned at 6:23 p.m., just 24 minutes behind the Senate and only three days into a planned 10-day special session that never veered from a rhetorical battle between Republicans who said taxpayers need relief and Democrats who said the tax cuts would devastate local government services.

"We're changing the status quo like never before in the state of Florida," said Sen. Mike Haridopolos, R-Indialantic, a key architect of the Republican-written plan.
