What happened to Jacksonville based retail?

Nordstrom's is coming to Jax.  Everyone is celebrating and happy.  I think it's sad.

Stein Mart, is barely staying afloat.  Winn-Dixie has seen better days.  What went wrong here?

Awww man.  i thought this thread would be cooler.  To address the first post, Nordstrom will in no way compete with the two mentioned companies and they are both doing fine....

OK, here's what i'd like to talk about.  Back in 2005-2008 I used to enjoy coming home from school and enjoying my neighborhood (riverside/avondale).  Part of that enjoyment was that there were a few cool retail stores that had some good stuff that not a lot of people had or knew about in G-ville.  I would buy t shirts from Anomaly, jeans and shoes from armor, and whatever I found at the clothing warehouse.  Back in gatortown where you were either fratty, from miami (guido), or an outcast; I stood tall and proud in my ben sherman jeans and threadless tshirts.  Both of those stores have either closed or taken a new direction and my recent favorite Tact designs is now gone as well.

Where have the cool shops gone from the neighborhood?  Where do people (guys who don't want to shop at Wolfgang) buy decent clothes these days? Urban Outfitters is too over the top for me but I like a good button down and a sturdy pair of jeans.  Recently that relegates me to the SJTC, which is painful.  I'm also that size where depending on the brand I'm S-M-&L so I like trying on clothes first.

Help a guy out.

Its what went wrong in a lot of places. Local industries drying up, more jobs shipped overseas, big corporations shoehorning themselves into every facet of our lives because they got in early & were able to grow, towns just letting it happen with little to zero incentive for local businesses to thrive. Until we're left with each town basically looking like copies of each other with the same stuff in them, all accessible only by our good friend the automobile. Sure, there's some local ones here & there, but NOTHING like it used to be. You can see remnants of it everywhere. Local businesses & industry was really what made America great. Its sad now. We've become a nation of consumers & debt-based BS style growth.

I personally couldn't give two shits about Nordstrom or Wal-Mart or anything similar that is based somewhere else & has goods shipped in from China to sell to all us dopes. Places like that are really the epitome of everything wrong with our culture & economy. I think a lot of people understand this, but since they can sell stuff cheaper by doing what they do, and people's wages not keeping up with inflation, and there you go.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to the Cheesecake Factory. I know its wrong, but god damn that Reese's cheesecake is too good! ;)

I feel your pain. I'm 6'6" and can't find anything that fits - shirts and sweaters are never long enough. Or if they are, they are way too wide.

I wish I had a suggestion - I would say to shop online, but that doesn't help for trying on your clothing before you buy it.

I'd definitely recommend against Topman, if and when their collection is carried by Nordstrom - it's all terribly made and won't last at all (although it tends to be inexpensive, so it's almost disposable clothing).

Word up. Where does one get a decent pair of jeans around here?

Your right, things are looking pretty bad.  If this was Stein Mart's best quarter, they probably aren't going to survive very well a decade from now.  It now takes 3 Stein Marts to buy one Nordstroms.   Winn-Dixie turned into a disaster.  Winn-Dixie should have bought Bi-Lo, not the other way around.  At the price they bought it for, it would take 7 Winn-Dixies to equal one Costco.

I don't know what they are doing at Seattle but if they are creating retail stores that Jacksonville is cheering for to open, I don't know what's going on with the city.  Would Seattle cheer when Winn-Dixie or Stein Mart opens a store over there?

What on earth are you talking about? Stein Mart's fortunes are improving. Winn-Dixie declined and was bought by another company - that's now moving to Jacksonville, meaning it's an even bigger Jacksonville-based firm than Winn-Dixie had been.

So basically, you would say YES to "Would Seattle cheer if Winn-Dixie or Stein Mart opens a store over there?"  Would there be just as much excitement in Seattle as there is in Jacksonville over Nordstroms and Costco?

^^^It's all doom and gloom here in Jax Cityimrov. Jax is an apocalyptic wasteland that looks like the equivalent of fourteen Hiroshimas, back when the Enola Gay flew overhead. I'm scavenging and foraging for food as we speak in this god-awful terrible ruin of a city. More dismal times are ahead....

I said no such thing. Feel free to re-read what I did say.
