This new Grand Central Station downtown

So I have been reading a lot about this Jacksonville Regional Transportation Center and I have to admit I am impressed.  Though it seems to sprawl over a few too many city blocks ... centralized transit is a great idea.  And being that I work very close to that site, I can see there is plenty of room for other business and residences to spring up.  Then when I visit JTA's website I say to myself ... wow these people have some great plans!!  I mean there are streetcars and commuter rail and ferry services and I am just amazed (though baffled because I don't really understand BRT ... its like an express service bus with fancy styling I guess)!!  But then I read further and see that the ferry services have been put on the shelf for now, understandable; that the streetcar is good ... however I am confused as to whether the plans are extensions of the current skyway system or street level light rail?  And of course the commuter rail is the best idea since taking down tolls (because I've been told Jax used to have them at every crossing of the river) ... but another question, when JTA and the city finally get the money to build their great Taj Mahal Transit Center complete with executive offices and all ... do they have a plan of what to do with the current downtown bus station?  I mean ... it seems like a great place to site some kind of light rail system that shares the road with car traffic ... or construct an office building with a second floor lobby that serves the skyway?
Proud supporter of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

I haven't checked the site on this thing, but I don't really know how it will be any different than just a regular bus station. It sounds to me like this is all it will be; just a very big bus station.

When I first saw the title of this tread I thought it was satire :) I really hope those plans that JTA came up with doesn't come to fruition. I haven't really heard about it much since Mayor Brown came into office. I'm guessing it's been put on pause for a bit?

It's overpriced for what it does. Elsewhere on this site are examples
of other cities who created transportation centers not only cheaper, but taking up less space. Some of the JTA plans are awesome, but it will be decades before any of that happens.

We have our own central station a.k.a. Jacksonville Terminal a.k.a. The Prime Osborn.  Let's start using it the way God intended as our Transit hub.

it will happen, just not in the form that we have seen.

As the 'Ancient Transit Monster' on this site, I have to agree with FSUJAX, it will happen, but it won't look like anything we have seen in the drawings.

Streetcars are likely, but may not be JTA operated.

JTA may be out of the highway business soon enough.

Transportation Center will likely be consolidated into the single grand old 1919 Jacksonville Terminal.

Ferry's, don't make any economical sense, either in dollars or economies of time.

The Skyway will likely get some modest improvements, but it might be a long time coming.

Finally, check out our search window, we have dozens of articles about Commuter Rail, Bus Rapid Transit, Streetcars, and the so-called JRTC.

Welcome aboard!
