Retractable Roof Everbank

Out of curiousity, for all you engineers/architects/contractors... what would it cost to have a retractable roof put on sweet home Everbank Field?  You've probably seen Mularkey wants a practice bubble, which I'm sure is immensely cheaper, but it had me thinking and if Khan wants to upgrade the "fans experience" I know a lot of people talk about the heat (not me personally) early on in the season.  Not soo much looking to debate whether or not it should be done here, but can it be done and what would it cost?

All W.A.G. analysis's are welcomed and accepted!  Thanks!

Screw that.  We're in the age of 'The Cloud' now...

Preparing for 2022 World Cup, Qatar Unveils Remote-Control 'Cloud'

March 25, 2011
  by Eyder Peralta

University of Qatar's engineering department designed an artificial "cloud."
One of the big questions surrounding Qatar as host of the 2022 World Cup has been how it's going to keep temperatures comfortable on the field. At summer's peak, Doha's average temperature hovers well above 100 degrees.

Well, researchers at Qatar University's engineering school say they have a solution: They have designed a mechanical "cloud," or more specifically a helium filled airship that can hover above stadiums, like a helicopter, and provide shade.

It's looks spectacular. BBC Mundo â€" the audio is in Spanish â€" shares the university's animation of how the device would work:

I can't figure out how to embed the flash player, so you'll have to click on the link to see how it's supposed to work.

A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Sounds like a zeppelin... I don't know about that!

This should be a decent estimate:

Real Cost Of Vikings Stadium Retractable Roof
May 04, 2010 -

With the unveiling of the Viking stadium plan Monday, it is clear legislators are carefully watching the bottom line, but the opportunity to give their citizens a truly unique facility may be lost due to inaccurate information being used when informing the public how much a new stadium would cost.

The plan outlines the $791 million cost of the stadium, and details what revenue sources would be used to pay the bill. Multiple sources have stated that adding a retractable roof to the Vikings stadium would come at a cost of an additional $200 million.

Engineers at Uni-Systems, LLC, an engineering firm in Robbinsdale that specializes in kinetic architecture such as retractable stadium roofs and operable window walls, believe that this estimate is accurate when considering adding a retractable roof to an open-air stadium.

“The high cost comes in if you’re talking about adding a roof to a design that never had one to begin with. Putting a fixed roof on an open-air stadium could cost as much as $150 to $180 million depending on design,” said Pete Fervoy, business development manager at Uni-Systems, “Adding retractability to a fixed roof design could increase that total cost to $200 million.”

Excellent!  Thank you.  I want one for Christmas

While the cloud is over Everbank, can I store my apps and downloads in it as well?

$6-$7 mil for a practice bubble, what's another $144 million?

I do, for the record, think it would be amazing to have a retractable roof

The University of Virginia is in the process of constructuing an indoor practice facility at an estimated cost of $13 million.

Actually I thought about a retractable roof for Everbank Field a few months back. Being in Florida that would be a HUGE plus. Not to mention it would add some shelf life to the stadium and also would be a drawing card for sporting events that host indoors. On a side note, the Falcons now want an open air stadium.

The cost of such a thing would outweight the benefit. They'll get their practice bubble at some point and it will be a hell-a-lot cheaper.

At some point our stadium will be outdated. And building another one is out of the question in Duval county. Doing major renovations such as adding a roof amoungst other things will probably be the best route. I could see it happening.

At some point every stadium will be outdated. The city and the team have done a very good job of keeping it updated. They added the Pepsi plaza, the escalators, the BudZone, the Terrace Suites. If the stadium was exactly the same as it was in 1995 I would be concerned but alot of money has already been pumped into it. I don't see a retractable roof being a good use of money at all.

If you want to do anything in the stadium, you could re-do some of the suite and make some largers ones where the press box is and relocate the press box to an area above the north end zone. This was discussed a decade or so ago in preperation for the Super Bowl but never was done.

I think with Khan and Lamping in charge, we're going to see some different things at Everbank but I doubt a roof is one of them.

One thing I wonder if they'll look into is the field level suites we see in Dallas and Seattle. If there was anyway the stadium could be retrofitted to accomidate them.

I was watching a video from 1995 and was so amazed how different the stadium looked.! it was so.. plain but yet it was being called" one of the greatest stadium in football" LMAO But I agree. Weve done a damn good job of taking care of that stadium. And expect to see more renovations to come under Khan. I just want a roof?! Cant a man dream Cooperfield???  ;D

You guys are nuts.

I love me some open air, especially when we get past September.

Who wants to watch an F-18 flyover through a hole in the roof or some awful girder system?

What's next, lights at Wrigley Field?

:)

Spend a chunk of that $200 million on some killer new video screens, and save the rest for the down payment on the killer new 62,000 to 65,000 seat stadium that should eventually replace Everbank.

Anti redneck

You had me thinking that a retractable roof was being added to the stadium.
