Congress sends $59.5M to Jacksonville; $9.5 mil for BRT

Congress recently completed a $555 billion fiscal year 2008 omnibus appropriations bill that outlines local spending measures. U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown (D-Fla) reported how a portion of that money â€" $59.5 million or less than .0001 percent of the total â€" is earmarked for use in Jacksonville, including:

•$22.4 million for construction of the Veterans’ Cemetery planned on the Northside.

•$15.5 million for Camp Blanding’s Regional Training Institute Joint Operations Center.

•$9.5 million for JTA’s Bus Rapid Transit system.

•$3.7 million for dredging of the Intracoastal Waterway between Jacksonville and St. Augustine.

•$2.85 million for dredging of the St. Johns River.

•$1,305,000 for Citrus Canker Research in North Florida.

•$1 million for Heckscher Drive and bridge replacement.

•$500,000 for Jacksonville JTA’s Intermodal Center.

•$500,000 for Jacksonville JTA’s bus system.

•$492,000 for Jacksonville University’s Marine Science Research Institute.

•$490,000 for Mayport Ferry refurbishment and replacement.

•$312,000 for the Community Rehabilitation Center of Jacksonville’s substance abuse and mental health programs.

•$292,000 for Jacksonville’s Youth Crisis Center’s facilities and equipment

•$258,500 for Duval County Florida’s Youth Advocate Program, a juvenile justice recidivism reduction project.

•$243,000 for Duval County Public Schools equipment.

•$150,000 for streetscaping and renovation of Pearl Street Plaza.

Looked at from anywhere but JTA, that's also enough to build 4-5 miles of BRT feeder for Rail, and MORE then Memphis paid for the Streetcar starter.
