City Councilman Don Redman has taken up a post at Occupy Jacksonville.

"I'm just going to be hanging out," said Redman, who set up a table and two folding chairs near the steps to the City Hall entrance - right where the occupiers shoot streaming video of their efforts.

The vocal critic of the protesters was reacting to his frustration with the demonstrators, who he argues are breaking city laws with their protest that started last fall.

When he wasn't playng Rush Limbaugh on the radio, though, a civil back-and-forth started between the two sides, with Redman at one point debating teaching of Creationism with a protestor who was recording him.

At his table, Redman stacked a few religious pamphlets and some cards about services for the homeless, saying he thought the demonstrators might need them.

Occupy participant Gilbert Gregg told Redman he wasn't homeless. Gregg, a math major at Florida State College at Jacksonville, said he works two jobs and is an A student.

"You work two jobs. ... And you still have all this time," Redman answered.
Redman says he doesn't have a firm time he plans to stay, but expects to be back on future days.

"I won't be staying overnight," he said.

Why is this not a good thing? I'm happy and proud that Redman set up a table when he wasn't able to find a legislative means to clear the occupy "movement."

That he is blasting WOKV is simply genius.

It is clearly of how much idiot he is trying to make himself of, but the bottom line is that he is exercising his right of freedom of speech which I have no problem.

What I DO have problem with is that Mr. Redman have the nerves to try and get the Occupy protestors off the street which prevents them from exercising their OWN rights of freedom of speech by using his own rights.

How hypocrite and cliche this is. J

The solution? It is that SIMPLE by ignore any idiots and they will disappear, because they are not effective anymore. Just we Ospreys do at UNF campus where the infamous Brother Mike the Holy Hell Preacher. We pretended Brother Mike doesn't even exist on the campus and VOILA, he leaves.

Maybe with Councilman Redman talking to them, each will learn something from the other, even if his plan was to annoy them at the outset. Already Redman has learned it's not all just a bunch of homeless people raising a ruckus.  And it can't hurt Occupy Jax to have a city councilman to talk to.

I think it's the classiest and smartest thing he's done in a long time.  He's making his point exactly as the occupy folks are and any dialog has to be good for both.

As dim witted as everyone thinks Redman is I still kind of like him. Yes, I know some of the things that he has said.
Still, I find him to be more genuine than most. I'd prefer an unpolished politician over a polished one, most any day.

We always wonder why our politicians aren't upfront and why they are such showmen. The reason(S): WE THE PEOPLE. We expect them to be showmen and play a role. "Act for us" we say. "Dance, damn it, dance" we hollar. And they do...for the royalty check.

We're shocked when they don't play the role and mock them accordingly. I want my representatives to be upfront and I'm willing for them to look like idiots when honesty of opinion/ideology supersedes political theatre.  I appreciate that Redman set up a table in front of city hall. Yet, I suppose that is political theatre but interesting theatre.
