New Orleans was host today to a kickoff celebration for the second annual National School Choice Week. Approximately 2,500 people attended the event at UNO's Lakefront Arena.

The week will feature rallies, film screenings, and town hall meetings across the country designed to promote school reforms. All told more than 350 events are planned.
New Orleans was selected for the kickoff because it's considered an exemplar for its embrace of controversial school reforms such as charter schools. This year about 80 percent of the city's public schoolchildren attend privately managed charter schools.

"Parents here are empowered to access a true menu of educational options from improved public schools, to public charter schools, to private schools, homeschooling, virtual education, and more," said Andrew Campanella, the event's vice-president of public affairs.

Today's event featured several speakers and local musicians. The speakers include James Carville and Board of Elementary and Secondary Education members Kira Orange Jones and Chas Roemer. In addition, Simone Smith, a New Orleans Science and Math High School student, spoke, sharing her personal experience at the charter school. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal addressed the crowd via video.
