The famous FEC RY bridge in downtown Jacksonville is scheduled to be repaired. The railroad will be replacing steel plates below the track level, between the bridge and track itself. Train traffic will not be interrupted but at least for a while the boat traffic will be strictly scheduled in daylight hours.

The Coast Guard has scheduled repairs from Jan. 15 to March 29. Work will occur Sunday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with work stopping each day from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Don Redman wanted to know why the railroad didn't do the work at night, something being pushed by Lambs Yachting. The railroads reply that it cannot be done safely is understandable, Redman said the highway department does it, but the highway department isn't dealing with gaps between every railroad tie and dangerous, swift, open water down below.

Isn't it covered in something like tar to prevent rust?
When all else fails hug the dog.

let's hope it gets repainted!

I'm pretty sure that this is a precursor to a new coat of paint. No tar, just good quality paint which should last for years. Out in the boonies the rust would be left in place as it actually protects the metal surface, but here in the city it is likely they would have to paint just to be a good neighbor.
