I'll reserve my judgement until I see how the rest of the coaching staff fills out. Really at the end of the day, most coaches are only as good as the talent they are coaching. Put JDR as the head coach of the Pats or Packers, and they still would be in the playoffs. Only GREAT coaches can coach up bad talent and honestly that's what we've had for the past few years. I don't believe Mularkey is a 'great' coach, but if we sign some good free agents... WR's, a backup QB that's actually worth his salt, have a good draft and people come back from the IR healthy next season... I think we will be more than competitive. Otherwise, I don't see much of anything changing.

I can agree with every EXCEPT the Del Rio example. He was a true example of a TERRIABLE coach. You put him as HC on those team and he would fire the staff and hire someone new every season (like he did here LOL) I dont think, I know we will be better. There were several factors that went into our situation over the past years, bad drafting, bad coaching, bad decision by management, and the list goes on. Things can only get better from here. And I totally agree about Luke Mckown. He is an AWFUL backup. I got more nervous when he was playing than Gabbert. Mckown is absolute garbarge.

I love how everyone on the Jaguars.com message board (and apparently, Prisco too) is using last weekend's Falcon game to define Mularkey's entire career.

Or at least, the largest gap between their perceived and actual intelligence and foresight this side of Charlie Sheen.

At the risk of having my intelligence questioned, my initial reaction on this hire is disappointment.  Past behavior/ performance predicts future behavior/performance.  He didn't have a winning record as a head coach.  It doesn't appear that his offenses have been that great in the past.  I hope I am pleasantly surprised.

Okay. I have a question. You say his offense's havent been great in the past. The Falcons have been in the playoffs for the past three seasons? I think mention before also that Bill Belichek did not have a winning record as a head coach before he went to New England. I feel it takes the right person in the right situation to be sucessful.

The Falcons had a top ten offense in yards and scoring this past year.

The kind of people whose intelligence we're questioning are the ones who think last Sunday's Falcon loss was the sum total of Mularkey's career, or that Khan is cheap and deliberately refused to pursue Bill Cowher, or that Gene Smith wants to lose/is Mularkey's best friend.

Not terribly excited, but I could be surprised. He was a head coach once before, and it didn't go well in Buffalo, but they had a weak roster IMO.

I'd like to see how the rest of the staff shakes out. If there is "glass half-full" way of looking at it: Green Bay was ridiculed for hiring the offensive coordinator of the worst offense in the league the previous season. Now Mike McCarthy has one super bowl ring, and was the #1 seed this year.

We shall see, but I definitely understand the skepticsm.

I think he was the best assistant coach out there....and to be honest, I'd rather have an offensive guy than someone like Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy, or Jeff Fisher.

They also had a QB dilemma that year as well. And we know first hand how much of a mess that can be. I actually like him because he expressed how he felt about the direction of the Bills franchise and they didn't wanna listen to him so he stepped down. To me it atleast shows he has some passion and does not settle for mediocrity, unlike Del Rio.  And to be fair, Buffalo still has not put together a winning team to date. So their issue is way beyond the HC.

lol just like our problem might be beyond our head coaching issue. I'll be sorta surprised if Gene is here once his 3 year extension is up OR if he even survives those 3 years. Mr. Kahn has said he's definitely not going to be as patient as Mr. Weaver was.

He won his first season there, and walked away from the job after the second year because he didn't like the direction of the franchise.

+1. Dungy, Cowher, and Fisher are mostly in it for the money at this point in their careers, hence the airtime gigs. Furthermore, while they are "big name" guys that may have brought a lot of fanfare, I believe between the three of them, they only won 2 Super Bowls...(I said I believe, not 100% positive here). At best, Cowher/Fisher/Dungy would be a temporary solution. We need someone a little younger whose out to prove a lot more.

And Buffalo  has been floundering as a franchise since the Jaguars ended Jim Kelly's career in 1996. With the exception of the one or two year Flutie spark, they've been a disaster. They've probably had eight coaches since Levy retired. I don't see how any coach could be successful in Buffalo.
