I think we are better off shoring up some other weak spots on the team (OL, DL, CB, OLB) and letting it ride with Gabbert and Henne for another year.  If one of them steps up, that's wonderful.  If not, 2014 should offer a richer crop of QBs than this offseason does.  I'm not at all fond of Sanchez or of the idea of targeting an Alex Smith or Matt Flynn as a stopgap.  The next guy we bring in should be the for-sure franchise guy (unless Gabbert proves next year that he is just that).  Or if we think a Geno Smith or Mike Glennon is that, then go for it.

I did remember your explanation of Cordy Glenn over Branch.  How's Glenn doing in Buffalo?  I know he is not starting because they have a couple of solid guards (saw that they just extended Urbik), but under the circumstances this year, he might've ended up a first-year starter with us.

Also, anyone have any strong opinions for or against our prospectively changing to a 3-4?  This is an idea flogged often at the Big Cat Country website.

I dunno. I think we need to be a little more aggressive about the QB situation. That the #1 problem at this point. I dont think I can stomach letting it ride another year and ending up with another losing season. I know it hasnt all been the QB, but thats been the main issue. I dont wanna give up on gabbert, but when do say " Okay this shit is not working." This losing is getting really old.

The more I read the Gene thread, the more I wish I played the lottery.

This season just fell apart on both sides of the line, although no one (including me) expected the DL drop off...

Glenn is the starting LT for the team according to the Depth Chart on their website, he was injured in Oct and came back in Nov.   Rough day against the Seahawks last week, but at this point in the year some teams have just lost it.

According to buffalobills.com

Quote...Glenn had his hands full all day with Seattle’s defensive line, and the 2nd round draft pick had a rough time right from the start. It started with a false start penalty on Buffalo’s first offensive snap. Glenn picked up another false start in the third quarter.

But his pass protection struggles were highlighted with a couple of plays in the second half. Chris Clemons’ sack early in the third quarter came on a speed rush around Glenn. And later in the third, Clemons beat Glenn around the corner and got to Fitzpatrick, stripping the ball loose. Glenn had a chance to flop on the ball but he couldn’t, and Seattle’s Bruce Irvin recovered and ran it back to the ten yard line. Glenn will have better days in his NFL career.

I seem to be a failure at it.  About all I keep remembering is someone saying we are after a great WR prospect from Nashville Auto Diesel College and some other equally absurd colleges.

hey...my brother went there ;)

Glenn just might be miscast at LT, and I guess he is playing there out of necessity; I know they used a different LT against us, who I thought was their starter.  He struck me as a better prospective interior lineman than tackle.

A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Well, I'm ignorant.  Clearly Glenn has been playing much more than I thought, and at LT.  How'd I miss that when we just played the Bills?  Thanks, NRW.

You're welcome.

I've resigned myself to just providing empirical evidence, statistics and random animated gifs.   ;D

It's been a long season.

I plan to spend the Pats game in a drunken stupor. It's nice for the NFL to grace me with such a great game the day before my bday. The gift of a Jaguars beatdown -_-

Anger has performed magnificently, another good scouting job by Gene.    Still using the 3rd rounder on him was a luxury this team couldn't afford and it's those type decisions that make me scratch my head.

True.  Here is the problem with the Anger pick.  He is third in the league in net punting (2.5 yards behind the leader).  The difference between Anger and the #10 guy on that list is one yard per punt.  The return is simply not there in the third round.

It's remarkable in looking at older drafts, how willing teams were to take kickers and punters with high picks.

Chip Lohmiller, John Lee, Todd Sauerbrun were all second rounders.  Jason Elam was a third.  Ray Guy was a first.  Probably the most egregious one of all time, Russell Erxleben was a first.  I think he was in the top 15 picks to boot.

Just heard on WOKV that Kevin Elliot was signed by Buffalo.  Have you guys ever looked at other games and picked out random ex-Jags on other teams?  Players that are contributors??  IMO, giving Elliot such a small margin of error was...odd, and I believe letting him go was a mistake.

Elwood

Seems like half the Detroit Lions roster is made up of ex-Jags. Even have Shack Harris working in the front office.

I agree.  I think he's a guy who had a chance to blossom in his second year once he caught up to the speed of the NFL (I don't think butterfingers were the reason for the drops).  He's a physical talent and was contributing on special teams.

The timing for getting rid of him was very strange.  I was wondering why we kept a relative nonentity like Cosby to get rid of Elliott, especially now that we've gotten rid of Cosby too.

I'm pretty annoyed by the constant player turnover.  I don't know if other teams do it as frequently as we do, but there seems to be no logical pattern behind the Jags' releases and non-releases.  You're running low on serviceable WRs, but you keep cutting them anyway?  Zach Miller sneezes and his bones shatter, but you keep him around for 3 years?  Eben Britton can't block a sink drain, but he's still on the team, so is Guy Whimper (aka "El Matador").  We've finally seen Chris Prosinski make a play, but only after being literally hurdled a hundred times like a Koopa Troopa.

Once I started counting up personnel moves I considered questionable--going all the way back to the release of Fred Taylor--a lot of them just don't make sense to me.
