JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office evacuated Jacksonville City Hall on Tuesday morning after a suspicious item was found in the mail room.
The bomb squad responded about 8:45 a.m. after receiving a 911call when an X-ray showed something that alerted an employee.
Channel 4's Jim Piggott says it is standard procedure for the city to scan all incoming mail items.
All streets around the three-story building are closed, including the intersections of Duval and Main, Union and Laura, Ashley and Laura, Hogan and Monroe, Church and Julia, Union and Laura.
JTA Skyway service is also suspended in the area and some surrounding buildings voluntarily evacuated. Firefighters and rescue personnel were staged about one block away in case they are needed.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda said she had no details about the package or how it was addressed.
"One the they rendered safe, then those details will come out," Bujeda said.
A news briefing is expected about 10:30 a.m. to provide details on the situation.
