I'm not sure what upkeep is not being done....the park is always mowed, and aside from the issues with the creek, what more is supposed to be done and isn't? Plus, the neighborhood helps to keep it clean.

As far as safety issues, unless you're out there at night, there really aren't any. It's more of an issue that some of the unsavory folks are known to come from the housing over there, committing crimes in our neighborhood, and that's generally been during the night.

Fire ants are everywhere, and I don't really see that as an obstacle either.

This is a great means in which the neighborhood will have another use of the park, and will be open to others from outside of the neighborhood, to come and enjoy it.

I think the park is mowed frequently enough, and I am not sure what you can do about fire ants in the park. The one thing that keeps annoying me is the trash under the bridges. (well. maybe I need to go there and pick it up this weekend).

The park is safe as far as I am concerned. I am regularly walking the dog there on my way to the dog park, on either site of Hogans creek. I think it comes back to the old "use it or loose it" theory: If you don't use the park, someone else will. The dog park mentioned above is a great example. One of the guards once told me how that area was a big problem. The park was not used, and hard to cover for the guard patrolling Confederate Park. But with the dog park, all the vagrant trash and drug use issues they had went away by itself as the park was now used for good.

Go disc golf!

I think it's amazing that this once proud park system is finally getting attention, and even better that this spark is being driven by private citizens/organizations... and people are still complaining about it.

Anyone up for a Hogans Creek cleanup this Saturday?  We are hosting one, at 9AM.  Meet behind the fire station(behind the Winn Dixie) at the corner of Beaver and Washington.  Hopefully we have enough people where we'll have enough boots on the ground stretching all the way down the creek basin.

Exactly! I take my dog to Klutho park every day and have not had a problem - fire ants are in specific ant hills, so just look where you put your feet!

I love how people who don't live in Springfield want to comment on the park's use/safety.  That park IS used and it IS safe.  Springfield has lots of events over there.  With kids.

Also, the disc golf is umbrella-ed under Sustainable Springfield (more healthy living - yeah!).  We will be contributing some of the Blue Foundation Grant money we received from the Childhood Obesity Coalition to help with the construction and to form a youth league.  I will get the ages for the youth league and post them so that anyone who has/knows kids who may want to particpate can.

I sincerely hope the area across Broad/Boulevard street isn't being utilized.  According to JSO, this area is not safe.  I don't know much about disk golf or those who play, but I would not play over there.
Cant tell if you are trolling are serious?? What exactly are the bounderies of Klutho Park?? I was always under the impression Springfield Jax nolonger had the crime issues they used to have. Does this park extend to Eastside Jax?

Those blood thristy ants are everywhere in Florida.  EVERYWHERE!

Not..like..this. I dare anyone to stand on the outer parameter on Boulevard between 2nd & 3rd streets & see how long they last. My guess is 30 seconds to a minute before they get you.

Look, I'm all for improvements like disc golf & stuff like that, but there's bigger fish to fry IMO. I think there's a reason why this park is generally deserted, and maintenance probably has a lot to do with it. Safety could be another, but I've never noticed anything unsafe over there. But I've sure as hell noticed the unkempt look, the sludge in the fountain & the ants gnawing on my legs.

All I'm saying is, don't be surprised if no one uses this course because of the unaddressed issues. I'll leave it at that.
Is there no civic agency to call about these problems?? Who maintains Memorial Park & Riverside Park?? Is that not COJ? I dont think Ive ever been to Klutho, but if its in Springfield why does it not get the same love?et the same treat

The park gets used.  Again those of us who actually LIVE in Springfield go to events there and use the park.  good grief.  why would we want to put disc golf into a place where we feel unsafe?  That doesn't even make sense.

Here is a map of the park and where the holes are for coolyfett

Despite what others may say, this is a huge plus for the Urban Core! I thoroughly excited and I don't even play golf.

Understandbly there are saftey concerns no matter what city park you are in...albeit Jacksonville or any other city in this country.  I've played disc golf all over the US and some areas are very undesirable.  Based on what I have read, and what I have seen at Klutho, there are some concerns for safety where CCINJAX mentioned.  However, from my experience, play in a group and never near dusk.  I personally will give the course 6 months before I go out there... just want to be sure it's safe.

As for Willowbranch park.. would be a great opportunity for another course in Jacksonville.  If you are serious about having a course installed, contact your Councilman and express your concerns.

We need more courses in Jacksonville!!!

I may not live there, but I have been to the park on numerous occassions.  I have even provided feedback regarding the design and installation of the Disc Golf Course.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions of me... I will answer to the best of my ability.

I'm glad to see there is interest in the disc golf course. I'm actually helping an old creative director of mine create a logo/map/score card for this and I think it will be a great addition to Hogans Creek.

Having lived in Clearwater, there were a few Disc Golf course I would frequent with friends and I've always wondered why there aren't more disk golf courses here in Jacksonville.

Anyways, once it's built I highly recommend getting yourself a disc and playing some holes, it's a fun game.

Just for everyones info.........the Old Bay Meadows Golf has a "Disc Golf Course" on it currently! Some how Frisbee Dan convinced DR Horton into leasing some of the property to him for a small fee. Not sure about the hours but will try and find out when  I return first of next week!
