Port considering running Mayport ferry

The Jacksonville Port Authority is developing a business plan to operate the Mayport Ferry, authority Executive Director Rick Ferrin said.

Ferrin said the authority had been asked by the mayor's office some time ago to consider assuming the role from the city, which contracts with a company to run the ferry and subsidizes its revenue shortfalls.

IMHO, they should charge high enough fares to cover all costs.  If not enough people use it to keep it going then let it die.

It's too bad the State cut the funding of the ferry (it connects a State road) which forced the City to pick it up.  I like the ferry, personally.  I would like to keep the ferry as part of Mayport Village, which I think could be a tourist destination if managed appropriately....of course, we haven't done too good a job so far.
