Boy this takes me back...i went to the university of Tampa and lived on Davis island...the best little grocery store in the city...great proximity to downtown and UT...i had a blast and remember those days fondly...beercan beach was kind of where my adulthood started...aka my first time getting really drunk...lol..

nice comparison between Davis Islands and San Marco....the thing about both communities is you can find some pretty inexpensive places to live...apartments on Davis Blvd can be cheap (just like those north of the square in San Marco).

as for the business district, I highly recommend Tate Brothers Pizza

that place was great - lots of great memories there! ;)

I would say that San Marco has a lot more going for it in terms of walkability. Most of Davis Islands is car dependent and people cannot walk to do basic things.

Wow. They look almost exactly alike. I will admit though San Marco still has a leg up on them. As a stated in a previous post, Tampa and Jacksonville are almost identical cities, except Tampa's forward thinking when it comes to certain things. Where as Jacksonville has always country mindset.

I was just in Tampa last weekend, doing tourist like things and took a tour of Davis Island. Nice area and it is alot like San Marco. Good thread!

And that the Tampa MSA has twice the population as Jax. In fact, according to wikipedia, the "Tampa Bay Area" which I guess also includes the Sarasota MSA, has over 4.2 million people...or three times the size of Jax.

I just visited this wknd too. I give it two thumbs up...saw a lot more on this trip than I have in my five previous trips where I just spent time either in the burbs or right in the middle of downtown.

Based on a quick look at a map, it doesn't look like you can walk to the mainland.  Am I missing something?

There are two one-way bridges connecting the islands with the mainland.   The bridge to Plant Avenue (northbound lanes) has 8'-10' sidewalks on both sides.
