For the life of me, I can't wrap my head around this one???  It has nothing to do with my politics on whether or not Climate Change exists but rather what peace did he spread or create?  Would it more far in the category of the Scientific realm?  Maybe someone can tell me what it means to win a Peace prize.

Sincerely,
Cue

This is the official explanation:

QuoteThe Nobel Peace Prize for 2007

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 is to be shared, in two equal parts, between the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr. for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.

Indications of changes in the earth's future climate must be treated with the utmost seriousness, and with the precautionary principle uppermost in our minds. Extensive climate changes may alter and threaten the living conditions of much of mankind. They may induce large-scale migration and lead to greater competition for the earth's resources. Such changes will place particularly heavy burdens on the world's most vulnerable countries. There may be increased danger of violent conflicts and wars, within and between states.

Through the scientific reports it has issued over the past two decades, the IPCC has created an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming. Thousands of scientists and officials from over one hundred countries have collaborated to achieve greater certainty as to the scale of the warming. Whereas in the 1980s global warming seemed to be merely an interesting hypothesis, the 1990s produced firmer evidence in its support. In the last few years, the connections have become even clearer and the consequences still more apparent.

Al Gore has for a long time been one of the world's leading environmentalist politicians. He became aware at an early stage of the climatic challenges the world is facing. His strong commitment, reflected in political activity, lectures, films and books, has strengthened the struggle against climate change. He is probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted.

By awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 to the IPCC and Al Gore, the Norwegian Nobel Committee is seeking to contribute to a sharper focus on the processes and decisions that appear to be necessary to protect the world’s future climate, and thereby to reduce the threat to the security of mankind. Action is necessary now, before climate change moves beyond man’s control.

According to Alfred Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." (credit: Wikipedia)

I don't see any reduction or abolition of any standing armies due to his work.  I don't know that we can classify the Kyoto summit (and resulting Kyoto protocol and framework) as 'peace congresses.'  The necessary people coming together to end a war (or the like) is more like a peace congress, although admittedly I don't limit that interpretation to just that example.

What I do see, as one of MANY results from the work led by Gore and done by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is the fact that the government is mandating what kind of light bulb I can buy starting later this year.  And mandating what kind of car I'm going to be able to buy through manipulating fuel economy standards.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not an SUV nut, nor am I a rabid right- or left-winger.  I have no political axe to grind.

I'm just saying - it's laying a bad precedent.  What's next that's bad for the planet that I'm going to have to sacrifice?

Can't play on my computer because it gobbles up too much energy?  Nope - EnergyStar-compliant appliances take care of that.

Can't flatulate because of the methane released?  Nope - cows do that already.

In fact, all the volcanos currently spewing out methane, ash, carbon monoxide and -dioxide are doing way more to contribute to global warming and greenhouse gas emissions than anyone wants to seem to pay attention to.  Where's the IGOCC/Gore study on that?  Let's put something over the volcanoes to stop the pollution!

I don't see peace here.  Certainly not enough to warrant a 'Peace Prize.'  Has the work done been instrumental and groundbreaking?  Maybe.  The exact ramifications of that I'd leave to the politicos and pundits.

I agree. The Nobel Peace prize should have have gone to President G.W. Bush, for boldly bringing peace to Iraq and keeping us safe in this country from evildoers.
