QuoteThe format included officials standing before the audience and answering "yes" or "no" to specific questions. Mayoral candidate Alvin Brown attended. His opponent, Mike Hogan, declined, organizers said.

They were pretty daring even inviting him, last time he did a public appearance at a church, half the audience wound up walking when he started cracking jokes about how he wants to bomb abortion clinics. And this is the next mayor of Jacksonville. Grrreat...

Why should Hogan attend any of these pesky public forums if he already has the election sewn up?  What a tool...

The meeting itself sounds like something that happens in Iran...churches deciding what's social ills they can apply their church doctrine on. What's next? What if that church group or others don't like gays and start railing against those of a different cloth?

It all depends on what churches attended.  Outreach is common in the more progressive churches - like Unitarian Universalist and Unity (Two completely different groups) churches...

I just don't care for any religious organization applying their values and rules on others outside thier doors...my morals are none of ther damn business. I don't apply my morals on them...if so..there would be not tax breaks for churches..none. I feel the community can do this without any church involved.

Yeh, I mean hell , whats the use?  He already won... We are all just going through the motions.

I honestly HOPE he has to concede..  I really didn't care for the notion that he is just the next Mayor, period.  If that becomes the case , Im going to develop a conspiracy theory. Even the dead are voting  ;)

If the religious organization wants to go out there and feed and clothe those who are in need, I do not mind.  They are tax-exempt groups who are giving to the community.  Since their taxes don't fund our social services, it does no harm for them to help our community where possible.  I volunteered with FCCJ and Bethel to tutor inner-city high school students.  That is the kind of outreach that does not involve shoving religion down others' throats - it is just service that serves.

Personally I think this is what Brown needs- exposure.  The more he has the better.
