It seems like "everyone" believes dredging the river for Port business is what we need to do.  Here is a link to an opinion piece in today's T-U from a former Port executive who questions whether spending taxpayer dollars for Port improvements is something we should do.   http://jacksonville.com/opinion/letters-readers/2011-03-16/story/guest-column-lets-slow-down-rush-raise-taxes-jaxport

Personally, I think there should be a lot more critical thinking from the media, politicians and others about whether and how much money we should put into Port expansion.

Growing the port is critical for our city's future and economic health, but dredging the port 8 more feet may not be the best or only option.  I have heard in recent weeks some compelling arguments for why this isn't a good course of action and a couple other possibilities to achieve the same effect of a deep water port.

OK, I'll bite, what other possibilities?

Tampa dredging will cost more than Jacksonville, and Skyway bridge will be an issue too.
And, that $115 will save Jacksonville from financial ruin. - Mayor John Peyton
