On Jaguars This Week Vic announced he's taken a job with the Green Bay Packers. Only two more weeks of Ask Vic  :'(

And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

I was so upset when I read this.  He's a great writer and a great historian of the game.  He will be missed.

Hence the reason for the move?
In a boat at sea one of the men began to bore a hole in the bottom of the boat. On being remonstrating with, he answered, "I am only boring under my own seat." "Yes," said his companions, "but when the sea rushes in we shall all be drowned with you."

He actually said last night that it's mostly about the money. Green Bay has a global footprint and they're looking to create a more interactive experience for their fans around the world. I'm sure covering a winning team and walking the halls of Lombardi was a factor though.

I owe a lot of my football perspective to Vic, his column and his stories. I know like me, he brought a lot of fans off the ledge. It seems like almost all the local coverage otherwise just fans the flames of anger & entitlement that has become a full blown epidemic here in Jax.... Vic was the voice of reason... the calm in the storm.

This is a huge loss for the team... Vic is irreplaceable.

I can understand how Vic's personality can get under some peoples skin. I don't understand why he was always accused of towing the company line. He said at the beginning of the season that his expectations were low. He openly disagreed with players chosen in past drafts and he was hard on fans for being illogical.

Maybe his sarcastic tone & tough love weren't the best marketing techniques... but this is football... and in the long run he educated many irrational fans.. including myself.

And though I long to embrace, I will not replace my priorities: humour, opinion, a sense of compassion, creativity and a distaste for fashion.

Vic's whole persona was based on Chuck Knoll and run the ball stop the run. Anyone who knows modern NFL knows these are dated philosophies. Vic hates college football, hates Tim tebow even more and harps on fans for not buying tickets all the time. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

He sure did... and I'm going to miss it.

Lets make sure the next guy who comes in loves Tim Tebow and the Gators respectively, and has a blase' attitude concerning Jags tickets sales and the state of the Jags being in Jax. That sounds like automatic progress to me. Although I'm not the biggest Vic fan in the world as he was outdated in some ways of thinking, but his take on Tebow, and fans buying tickets was enough for me to overlook most criticisms, so I'm with Shwaz on that.

LOL, that was pretty funny "laugh hysterically then click buy tickets"; I'm guessing that 0.1 percent of Jag fans actually did that. Although I don't always agree with them Pete Prisco, Tommy Mac, and Mike Demsey are the only decent sportstalk that Jax has left. SFR is a joke esp. since Boselli left. If you say any criticism about Dan Hicken's and Jeff Prosser's teams' like The Gators, Jeff's ATL teams, Dan's Mets etc you will be berated and ran off the show; Jags bashing is welcome on that show; Hell they will even laugh and reason with some obvious Jags hater on the air, with Dan saying thing's like "Oh dear!". If you bash the Gators on SFR, they will quickly come to the defense of their beloved Gators, and you definitely won't hear them laughing. Sam K show is a joke as he doesn't take any calls and only talks to store owners/ sponsors, and chats about Hollywood types etc.

Vic referenced his time in PGH so much because it was the first of only two teams he covered in 39 years.  Writers write what they know, and he often used that experience to inform this experience.  I never understood why that rankled people so much.

Let's face it; we needed (and still need) to learn how to be NFL fans.  Like it or not, Steeler fans are the model, as much as that thought disgusts me.

Additionally, it's easier to tell stories about players, coaches, and personnel you don't have to rely upon to dig up quotes and info every day.  I'm sure being removed from that situation here will allow him to write about experiences both in JAX and PGH up in Green Bay.

Personally, I can't wait for the first time some cheesehead calls Vic a Jaguars homer and tells him to go back to JAX.

QuoteThis is goodbye and thank you. Thank you for:

  • Allowing me to live and work in Jacksonville, where I enjoyed sunny skies, sparkling winters, smooth roads, sandy beaches, beautiful golf courses, financial gain, new friends, a new lifestyle and a home my family loves.
Providing a work place that shimmered in teal against the blue background of the St. Johns River.
The Jaguars, who I watched grow from their birth to the sweet age of 16 super seasons. I wouldn’t trade any of them.
Readers that always made me want to do my best work.
    The thrill of game day.
Fred, Mark, Tony, Jimmy, Keenan, Leon and one of the best offenses I’ve ever covered.
The upset win in Denver and the late-night fly-by.
Making “Ask Vic” a source of pride.
    14-2.
    1996.
    Listening to the radio shows.
    Watching the videos.
All those great games against the Steelers.
Liking the Oklahoma drill as much as I do.
    Saying hello at training camp.
Sharing with me in “Ask Vic” sensitive, heartfelt stories that touched me and made me realize the column had become something more than a place to ask questions and get answers.
Making the day of the “Ask Vic” golf tournament my favorite day of the year.
Buying tickets and supporting the Jaguars. You will not regret it, I promise.
Not hating me for leaving you.
Being so close to Georgia and South Carolina. I really love this little corner of the country.
    2007.
    Laughing at the asterisk.
All the military people I’ve met.
My colleagues in the media, from Vito and Gene to Frangie and Lamm and everyone in between. I’m media and I like media.
    Pete Prisco.
Bobby Martin and Carl Cannon at The Times-Union. They called me their “bud” when I didn’t have one.
Baptist Medical Center, which twice saved my life.
The Baptist Cancer Institute nurses that told me losing my hair made me look younger.
The view of the St. Johns River I enjoyed every day as I crossed the Hart Bridge. By my calculations, I crossed that bridge nearly 10,000 times.
Saving the whale. Do not let him die.
The questions that wrote my column.
That gorgeous day in January of 1995, when I came to Jacksonville to interview for a job and instantly knew this was the place for me.
Every second of the last 16 years of my life
.
