Traffic alert

The state Department of Transportation plans to close the Main Street Bridge to vehicular traffic starting at 7 a.m. today.

Department spokesman Mike Goldman said workers will raise the bridge to begin working on the pulley and cable system.

He said he was uncertain when the bridge would be open again and advises downtown drivers to use the Acosta Bridge.

The Main Street Bridge started to malfunction around 2 p.m. Friday, Goldman said. The problems kept the bridge lowered during Saturday's Light Parade on the St. Johns River, although organizers said it affected only a few of the taller boats.

Goldman said the problem is unclear but it appears to be mechanical, not electrical.

He said the last major fix to the bridge came before the Super Bowl in 2005.
