FROM CBS NEWS

Is another opportunity floating right over Jacksonville's head and we haven't noticed? I think YES! New airport names, new flights, new port expansions, America's Logistics Center and still no one mentioning or embracing the new Generation of great Airships...  We mentioned this a while back and got some interesting comments but the average citizen seems to still be stuck standing under the HINDENBURG at LAKEHURST one particularly nasty, stormy, electriclly charged day in May 1937. Hey pilgrims get with the program, when I said "Great Airships" I'm talking about the Hindenburg being "GREAT" at 803.8' feet in length, you ain't seen nothin' yet! They (Boeing, Northrup, Grumman, etc) are working on 2,000+ feet.
Quote
Northrop Grumman Corp. said Monday it has won a $517 million contract from the U.S. Army to develop up to three hybrid airships for battlefield surveillance.

The airship, dubbed the Long Endurance Multi-Intelligence Vehicle, or LEMV, is slightly longer than a football field. It is designed to remain airborne for up to three weeks at a time at an altitude of 20,000 feet.

The contract with the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command-Army Forces Strategic Command calls for Northrop to design, develop and test the airship within 18 months and then deliver it to Afghanistan for an assessment by the military.

The Army has ordered 6 BTW, AND they are already testing out of Melbourne, Florida. You have to know commercial use for these heavy lifters can't be far behind. Jacksonville could grab the North American base of operations for commercial flights by flirting with the manufacturer's NOW, or we could wait 30 years and be number 70 in line. I would like to know just what might happen if the Chamber of Commerce, Jaxport, JAA, and The COJ, went on a bit of a letter writing campaign... we already have 3 of the major builders in our metro.

QuoteThe Aeroscraft will do for cargo what internet did for communication

It is important to select the means of transport that provides the lowest cost based on the time, size and weight constraints of what is shipped. Availability, punctuality, reliability, security and safety are among the factors to be considered, along with transportation cost, speedy delivery to customer warehouses, inventory demands, product quality and packaging requirements.

The Aeroscraft will have a particular advantage relative to other means of transportation for certain types of cargos. Time sensitive cargos that are currently shipped by land due to cost size and weight limitations of airfreight will be attracted to the speed of the Aeroscraft. Shipments that require multiple shipping vectors, such as truck to ship to truck, truck to aircraft to truck, etc. will benefit from the direct delivery capabilities of the craft. Where infrastructure is limited or does not exist, Aeroscraft will deliver the goods in a more timely and efficient manner.

Additional series of Aeroscraft is on the drawing board and will be scaled to payloads of up to 60 tons.
