The only thing I will contribute to this thread is that when I heard one of the young girls in the group being interviewed by a network reporter, I swear I thought she was speaking a foreign language. Our schools here are not doing much of a job teaching kids to string a few words together that the general public can understand. Seems to me that today we produce a wealth of performing artists, dancers, ball players, rappers, etc. but ask them to finish a sentence and they are stumped.

I don't care if they were wearing tuxedos and running to Sardi's to catch a late supper. You can't get out of your car in a tunnel!

sez who?

Thats about the most amazing claim ive heard in a while.

You can't just jump out of your car like that. Not in a tunnel.  Not on a bridge. It's terribly dangerous to everyone around. Who doesn't know that?

That tunnel is under the jurisdiction of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Their web site clearly states that pedestrians are not allowed in Lincoln Tunnel. (It's probably also somewhere in the fine print on the tickets or on the myriad of signs posted before you enter the tunnel). It's the first item in their FAQ (http://www.panynj.gov/faqs/bridges-tunnels.html#faqsBrTuGenQu01). So it is "can't" not "shouldn't". If you elect to use  the tunnel then you elect to follow their rules of use. If you don't agree to their rules of use, there are other means to access the city that are "pedestrian-friendly".  They are also listed in their FAQ.

I feel for these kids and hope they have another shot at that TV appearance. But it sure sounds like their chaperones were pretty naive in their preparations and scheduling to get the kids to their appearance on time. The Port Authority's response was not surprising. Their pre-2001 response would likely have been the same, just with different department names on the badges , since security has always been heightened in those heavily used access points. At least once they sorted out that the people running through the tunnel meant no harm, they tried to help them out to get to the show on time.
