I am a regular visitor to http://www.shorpy.com - it is a high-quality collection of historical photos in HD quality.  I noticed this morning that two pictures of downtown Jacksonville are featured on the site.  See for yourself at:

For some reason the second pic makes me think they didn't have an electrical code back then  ;)

By the way, Shorpy has great photographs of old Florida, including St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, Sarasota and other locations.  And it has a lot more than Florida stuff...  Feel free to explore the website for what it has to offer for history and photography fans...

I think a lot of those wires might be telephone and telegraph wires although a couple of them look like they are feeding a streetcar cable.

Can you imagine what it must have been like to wear those heavy, dark clothes in a Jacksonville summer?

According to the comments below the telephone distribution is from the circular pole in the center background.

That sight has some cool old pictures of St. Augustine.  1865 and 1890.

There are also some fantastic panoramic photos of Jacksonville in the Library of Congress files.

This one shows the original railroad swing bridge that crossed the St. Johns.  It was replaced by the current one in the 1920's.
When all else fails hug the dog.
