These are (IMO) the most overrated things that MJer's say that Jax needs. I'm just gonna come outta the box and say it.
1. Streetcar/Trolley
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that a Jax trolley wouldn't be functional, and benefical for the city, but will Jax wither away like the Wicked Witch of the West because we don't have a trolley? No. The bias hatred for buses is obvious on this site. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it; There's no changing my mind concerning that.
2. Aquarium
Jax sits between (esp.the Orlando theme parks, and the Georgia Aquarium) some of the most prominent aquariums in the Southeast, so what the hell is Jax gonna do to make our aquarium unique enough to bring visitors on a consistent basis? To be honest, if an aquarium opened in Jax, I probably would go only one time. Wow, a bunch of fish floating around! Switch an aquarium with a well done theme/amusement park, and now you're talking about bringing in the visitors!
3. Macy's
Enough said.
4.IKEA
Go to Scandesign; It looks like the same stuff.
5. Bass Pro Shops
If Gander Mtn. in the RCMP don't have enough for you concerning outdoorsy gear, then I don't know what else to say; The typical "falling for the name" syndrome.
That's all that I have for now; I probably will think of some more later.
^^^It's just an opinion, not politics or something that's "relevant" like breaking news or something. That's why I posted this in the "opinion" section. It's all good if you disagree, I wouldn't expect you to agree.
Check that, I guess my thread wasn't good enough for the "opinion" section, therefore it has moved to the "feedback & suggestions" section. LOL. Maybe I had a lil' to much to drink tonight.

Tell me more about Scandesign are they based in Jax? Macys is important but not important. I hear you on Aquarium.
Over rated to me on here is legit excuseS for lack of Jag support....very overrated. Publix Super Market....from a guys perspective....some of the men on here talk about grocery shopping like they are women lol. Service this service that...Just get what u want, pay for it and be on your way...stop crying about how Publix SERVES you. Ocks weed resume...Ock trys to act like he he sold cheech n chong their first bag, like him and willie nelson grew up together! Whats up with that Ock? You really blazing trees like that?? Overrated lol. Springfield!! OMG everytime I come on here the Springfield people think they have the best hood in the core, when everone and they pappy knows it Riverside. Riverside does it right. Springfield is a wannabe lol. Ha ha ha ha You all are freaking overrated!
Well lets not do anything then. We can just visit other cities then. I wonder how they got anything done in their cities. I wonder.
I would rather have water quality that could sustain more live fish than an aquarium.

Because they have an aquarium in Atlanta, we shouldn't want one in Jacksonville? I don't understand. If all you think an aquarium consists of is "a bunch of fish floating around" then I understand why you don't see the need for one. I have visited cities like Baltimore, Atlanta, Tampa, Gatlinburg and you what I did when I was there? Watched a bunch of fish float around.
To be fair, I've mentioned IKEA, and Sarah Palin, and Camerooni national. I think that Jacksonville needs those things.
Well, just the IKEA.
True story, one of my clients office manager is a smart version of Sarah Palin. I mean, looks and talks just like her. Spitting image. A+ would do her.
I, for one, am holding out for the robot Camerooni pelicans and won't rest until they are part of the Shipyards redevelopment. And they had better float around.
No one has mentioned SPAR yet, for shame

Scandesign opened it's first store in Winter Park, FL, but SD is currently is based in Longwood, FL(Orlando area). The Jax SD store (Philips Hwy) is one of seven stores across Florida. I too first thought that SD was based in Jax, until I looked it up.

I TOTALLY agree with you about Publix's reputation for being the ONLY supermarket that has well trained staff that's there to serve you. Maybe there's some secret underground massage parlors in all of the Publix's that I don't know about. LOL.
LOL about Ock selling Cheech and Chong their first bag.
I disagree with you with Springfield (a very important and historic neighborhood in Jax) but that's what having an opinion is all about. :)

ScanDesign only sells furniture (higher-end), correct? Whereas Ikea pretty much sells everything for the household, including appliances, lighting, fabrics, kitchen cabinets and of course European designed afforable furniture.
So I don't think you can really compare the two at all...

I totally agree. It's funny that Jax has tons of natural aquatic beauty but yet some probably would be more satisified with artificial things like an aquarium. Scubadive if you(aquarium lovers) wanna see fish swim around; Not that I would scuba dive; Brothas don't scuba dive! LOL.

I always thought that IKEA was higher end too; You're probably right, all I know is that those two styles of furniture look kinda similar to me.
I can't believe 'parking for the Landing' isn't on the list. :D

Just get what you want? I wish that it was that simple at Winn-Dixie. Far too often, I want to run in and buy one item. Well, that plan is shot to hell when I go to Winn-Dixie. The line is fifteen people deep and there is only one register open. Is that too much to ask for? All of the other frills don't matter as long as I can make a quick run to the store without having to wait behind every food stamp customer, check writer and price check in the county...
Can we add drunk pot shots at great posters to the list??
If you were to make a serious list of over Mentioned items, I would say Serbia, Red Snapper, the $ky-High Way (not the skyway, I don't think that could get enough coverage), Louise Despain, and John Boy.
Jaxson what does food stamp customers hafta do with long lines? With EBT, you swipe the card just like anyone else with a check/debit cards; It's not the eighties with the old school "food stamp monopoly money" LOL. I knew that this was gonna lead to the Publix v. Winn-Dixie argument.

I dunno if I'm the "drunk", or the "great poster"; Either way, I'll take that as a compliment. LMAO!
Capt Z, I dunno much about fishing, but I heard a fisherman over the radio say that (taste-wise) Red snapper is overrated (like you mentioned), and triggerfish is underrated.
Is it time to revive the Moon River Pizza debate/debacle?

I-10east ---> While you are right about the EBT innovation, you cannot fathom how long it can take to buy a loaf of bread (or make any other small purchase) at Winn-Dixie. This venerable supermarket chain seems to be a magnet for some dysfunctional shoppers who have nothing better to do than stretch out their purchases. I admit that I dated myself with the food stamp reference, but the massive lines at Winn-Dixie continue to this day. I have sent complaint cards to the Winn-Dixie HQ, but have never gotten a reply. Getting better...at what?
Any more sarcasm Stephen? You didn't agree with any of my overrateds? C'mon, surely you gotta believe that an old battleship docked DT that no one would visit is overrated. As for the fishing, I'm just responding to the peeps, not something that I brought up on my own.
Stephen, you're so misinformed. Ionic bonds are way better than covalent bonds. Agree to disagree if you want, but don't even think about asking me to lend you a cup of sugar. Houses in trees are better than holes under rocks, dip is better than chew, but I do agree with you on transmissions in older model cars. That's some exciting stuff!
I would like to talk about the demise of the Christmas Sweater. Are we so insecure and conformist that we're incapable of making a statement with our winter attire? I'm tired of earth tones and the occasional striped sweater. Bring back teddy bears, rocking horses, and christmas trees on my sweaters!

No sarcasm, just telling the truth. Its sold by DVI like its the greatest thing since sliced bread but a trip to most peer cities quickly indicates that we have a lot of work to do. The TU articles from a few months ago only validate my opinion. From the expressway, it looks great but at street level it resembles a scene out of 28 Days Later instead of what most view urban vibrancy as being.

i agree with thelakelander --- downtown jacksonville makes for a dandy postcard when viewed from the river or from the expressway. upon closer inspection, it needs some fixing up. i like how events like art walk and the jazz festival bring life back to downtown, but i still think that we have a way to go when compared to other downtowns.

I Guess the race for Mayor could possibly have an outside chance of being worth posting about over the next year and a half. Hey stop me if I am overrating the signifigance of this.
I agree about the Aquarium. Too many close-by cities have already done it. Fifteen years ago, maybe. I might feel differently if they weren't so expensive to build and maintain.

Scan Design sells furniture from leading contemporary designers... Ikea is a store full of particle board.
Scan Design/Bo Concepts customers are not necessarily Ikea customers. I can furnish a whole house at Ikea for what it costs for a nice couch at ScanDesign, haha.
And comparing Gander to Bass Pro is almost just as bad. Gander is soo overpriced.
While we won't be getting an Ikea ANYTIME soon, Bass Pro is very likely. More likely than most realize.
I dont know about snapper being over-rated b/c I love it and high end Yankee restaurants pay big money to buy Duval snapper and grouper to serve... but trigger is most definately the most underated fish caught off our shores. Trigger is EXCELLENT!
Maybe there was an aquarium discussion in the wake of the MJ article about the original plan for the Riverwalks and how many elements never were incorporated? I also recall a discussion of hypothetically incorporating a small-scale aquarium (something, I assume, along the lines of the one at the entertainment pier in St. Petersburg) as a feature in a riverfront convention center.
Stephen, what did you have in mind with an interactive aquatic interface center? What I was assuming was something like what we have at the Virginia Living Museum here in Newport News--essentially a model of the James River that features a coastal area with brackish water fish, a mountain area with fish native to western Va, etc.

You obviously sound like you know what you're talking about Fieldafm, and Jason_content. Thanks for clearing that up for me concerning those stores. I was kinda tongue in cheek with my "department store overrateds", but I'm sticking to my guns with my three main overrateds Streetcar, aquarium, and decommissioned ship things that ARE commonly talked about on MJ.
I guess in the minds of City Management, Historic Preservation is overrated ;)
I wonder if 20 years ago that I-10east would have thought that getting an NFL team was overrated.
You had to ask for it...?! ;D
1. Expanding the Skyway to anywhere.
2. Paying for bus shelters with ads.
3.. Thinking, for even a second, that JTA, FDOT,or TPO may actually be serious about, or committed to, doing the right thing with regard to any facet of the present or future of mass transit.
This should keep the discussion going for a few more pages. ;)

Why is that I-10east? Since Atlanta and Tampa have teams why do we need one? We can just go to their games and stop and visit their aquariums, return to Jax and have a picnic at the mainstreet pocket park. Now no city can rival that. Go Jax!!!

Wanted or believed we had a chance. I want to win the lotto but I wouldn't invest much hope in it.
^^^Put it this way, after STL screwed up it's bid, I began believing. I'm not gonna sit here and lie and act like we were one of the frontrunner cities to get a NFL team esp. with cities like BAL, and STL in the picture; That's old news now, and I recently got two Jags season tickets (Section 216, Row Y, seats 18, and 19)
Keith, aquariums are boring to me, sorry; They are money guzzlers! What multi-millionaire/billionaire philanthropist is gonna invest in an aquarium here? Jax is a very fickle city that's not easy to please. I can TOTALLY see Jacksonvillians QUICKLY getting bored with an aquarium. I guess that nearby Marineland, Jax Zoo's seasonal stingray exhibit, and the Marine Science Center isn't enough.
I want to talk about trolleys, light rail, bringing back Amtrak until I beat that race horse to death........Not.
Nevertheless, even you will admit it will be nice when Amtrak comes back downtown 10 years in advance due to the lobbying this site has stimulated.
It will be nice, but anything the JTA touches turns to brown goo that is akin to oil in the gulf. I have no faith in JTA and they are the worst, absolute worst public agency in Jacksonville. They are dead from the neck up, all of them.

I agree that Amtrack downtown will be a benefit. As for rail. Where has CSX been on this issue locally?
As for an attraction for Downtown what do you think of using containers on the 680' Landmar Pier when it reverts back to the citizens of Jacksonville after bankruptcy? We are a Port city. 14 Ports in the state. Imagine an Art container (Tie in with RAM), Food container, Sportsmans container, Exercise container, Communications container (radio stations rotating time to broadcast live there promotions...etc) Add your own idea. Mix it up and put a MJ trolley on the Pier. This is a viable inexpensive job creating economic stimulas that can happen now.
Nothing spells economic activity quite like scantily clad, dancing women and libations.
Where can I view [shelved?] plans for the 'Landmar Pier' ?

RAMalamadingdong impressive. but I'm guessing we'll be enjoying the underside of the fullerwarren for years to come.
thanks again for such a speedy response!
And everyone NEEDS to remember that with Landmar they were going to retain the 150 slip marina without one slip for the Public and that the 16 acres of Public space that was part of Shipyards was reduced to 8 with Landmar and that Landmar also had negotiated to be able shutdown the Riverwalk 12 times during the coarse of a year. The picture with the people walking is your Public space. My wife and I experienced the shutdown of the Riverwalk during Super Bowl XXXIX. It was a disaster. So imagine shutting out the people of Jacksonville 12 times during these special events.
It is not skill but just dumb luck that we are getting this property back. And in my opinion the 680' Promised Downtown Public Pier needs to be separate and that legislation needs to be immediately introduced by somebody to make it happen. There are so many legislative actions that are moving forward. This needs and should be a major city council and mayoral campaign issue. There is no way in heck I'd support anyone who doesn't want to make the Promised Downtown Public Pier separate.
Everyone, Everyone NEEDS to comprehend the magnitude of retaining Public Access and Economic Opportunity within our Downtown Jacksonville Overlay Zoning District.
