The downtown Starbuck's will be closing on April 21.
It will be interesting to see how long it sits empty.
Maybe an independent could come in and do coffee during the day, and wine at night.
See www.javavino.com for an example.
How cool is JavaVino! I visited their website but see no reference to expansion. There are folks here now with similar coffee connections. Maybe they'll be inspired!
I only offer them as an example of a concept someone in Jax could study.
It's not really much of a stretch for an operator with some experience
Call it CBWB (Coffee Bar/ Wine Bar) and crib the C.B.G.B.'s tee-shirt and logo.
(and then get sued...)
Why are they closing?
If one coffee shop is forced to close, I doubt another would want to open in that space.

Why are they closing?
Because the chain is in financial trouble. They are closing most of the locations they opened over the last couple of years.
Wonder if three layers could get the free rent deal for location number two.
They had terrible hours anyway. Tried to go there at 8 o'clock on a Sunday night and they were closed.
Nothing ceases to amaze me in this city. With both the Carling and 11E in walking distance and both near capacity (last I heard), you would think the Starbucks would have at least a steady stream of customers.
Come on y'all, it's a Seattle Chain trying to make it in Jacksonville... Never happen, they don't serve
Pickled Pigs Feet
Pork Rinds
Dark sweet Southern Ice Tea
or
Krispy Kreme Donuts
Outta touch with the 5 basic Southern food groups.

Oh crud, then I'm not Southern enough. I only like the donuts in moderation, but can NOT STAND sweet tea!
So, are we gonna give them a nice patronage send-off?

Combined, 11 East and the Carling only have 227 apartment units total. A retail business needs a much larger customer base to survive. It also did not help that there is another Starbucks three blocks away. I guess when it came down to picking one to leave open, Starbucks considered the Landing as a better location with a higher pedestrian traffic count.
It just never made any sense to me, why they opened one so close to the one at the Landing.
Thanks for the 411 lake. I didn't realize there was one at the landing (to which I rarely go) and I thought there were at least that many units in each of the buildings.
The coffee stand in the Bank of America Tower lobby serves better tasting coffee in my opinion. The Croatian woman who owns and runs the stand is very nice, and the scones shes bakes in the morning are as addictive as heroin.
The Coffee stand in BOA sells locally roasted Martin coffee. I do not believe anyone would think Starbucks compares.

haha, yeah I'm sure tons of people were lined up wanting coffee at 8pm on Sunday night, having to get up and be at work in 12 hours.

Well, we are talking about Starbucks here. They tended to do that all over the place.
Subway did that too and it's a recipe for disaster (no pun intended) for a business. A lot of people who bought into a Subway franchise lost money as Subway didn't pay heed to stores being concentrated. One store would sap business from another. I think this is referred to as cannibalization.
This store will be missed by me. I'd rather the landing location close, but I obviously that one is busier. :(

Why are they closing?
They're closing a lot of them because you can usually stand at one Starbucks and hit another Starbucks with a rock. 11E is no exception...2 blocks away there's a big Starbucks at the Landing. They over-saturated their market.
There is simply no need to have 2,3,4, or more Starbucks all within a few miles. The same number of people are still going to go there, the only thing they've changed is doubling, tripling, etc., their overhead. I never understood what they thought they were doing...

Oops, I posted before I saw your post. You're saying the same thing. Good analysis, though, I think cannibalization is exactly what the reason is for the closure.
Well I'll still pray for a last minute stay of sentence: Frankly I never really turned on and tuned into Starbucks until 11E, and I'm not thrilled with going to another location. Though my visits have been few lately, I'm going to miss them. Their spirit and service were excellent.
Good Bye dear friends... I wish you all the best.
Be great to see an eleventh hour appeal.

Has anything moved into this space?
Does anyone know the name and contact information of the management company for this space? I know someone who may be interested in taking it over. Thanks to all.
Try calling Vestcor...they'd probably know if they're not actively managing the property themselves.

LOL, LOL, LOL...but you're right "Ock."
"HU"
no Stephen...as you have noted in the past, the 11E Starbucks was doing just fine and was actually quite busy at times.
The location closed because Starbucks closed 500+ outlets around the country....all of which were opened within the last few years...and most of which were in suburban locations with free parking....one local example is the location at Philips/Baymeadows
The Landing Starbucks (less than 3 blocks away) seems to be doing just fine.
Next argument!

Update: 11E location still empty. Landing Starbucks also closing.
I'm sure the Landing store is closing because of a lack of customers...which is surely caused by downtown parking policies
oddly enough, every time I'm down at the Landing, I see at least 2 people in Starbucks....they never seemed to be hurting for business.
perhaps, as noted by someone else in another thread, it was really a lease price issue....you know, like the Panera in San Marco....guess they were struggling w/ lack of customers & parking too?
i believe starbucks has gotten to the point where they consider two customers at all times negligible.

I usually see two customers in there, too, probably spending a whopping six dollars. So if they can grab six dollars an hour for the 10 hours (I think) that they're open... that's $60 a day!!! I'll be generous and call it $100/day. Times 30 days a month. A solid $3000 a month in business. Less utilities, employee pay, rent, coffee supplies, etc etc...
Maybe Starbucks was just tired of hemorrhaging money. I don't know if they release sales figures anymore but I know from what I've read that in the early 2000s, averag annual revenue for a Starbucks was between $700k and $1m. I do not see the Jacksonville Landing store ever making that kind of money.
Two whole customers at the same time?? :o :o
While traveling, whenever I've tried to go to a Starbucks in downtown San Francisco in the morning, the line is out the door and into the sidewalk. And there, Starbucks are everywhere. I think this is what Starbucks considers "busy".

Yeah - see the Starbucks at the Town Center for example. Always a line, always a crowd. The one in San Marco seems to stay fairly busy. Not sure about the one still open in Atlantic Beach.
I'm kind of surprised the one in the Landing stayed open as long as it did.
I personally think it's completely sad that the one Starbucks in a downtown of a major city is closing because it can't do any business.
Some people have said that the parking is an issue. It's a friggin walk up across from like 5 large office buildings!!
Some people have said that the construction on Laura caused it to close. It's a friggin walk up across from like 5 major office buildings and the construction is now donw!!
Some people have had the idea to tear down the Landing and build a parking garage on its site. I will not even comment to that.
Anyway, 50,000 workers and 3,000 residents nearby cannot support one Starbucks? We're talking a company that literally does not even need to advertise (which is why it does not advertise). Sure Starbucks opened too many locations all around years ago and has had to downsize, but our downtown should easily support 2 Starbucks!
I tell you, Jacksonville really is poor town. POOR town. Independents are more expensive than Starbucks, though, so where the hell does everyone get coffee????? There's an independent upscale coffee shop in my office building that's like 2-3x as expensive as Starbucks.
Reading the FTU comments on this about how it closed because of lack of parking really made me think about the intelligence level going on down there. Aside from the unfortunate strip center locations where Starbucks still tries desperately to make the store open up with outdoor seating and the like, Starbucks prefers urban walk-up locations. Duh (hits head).
I mean, really, there are 4 Starbucks within walking distance of me (a few blocks or less) in addition to local coffee shops like Octane (which also serves wine/liquors at night), and all are open til at least Midnight and all are crowded at every hour they are open. Starbucks is like one of those magical places where high-level business talk/decisions are made, students are doing homework, and people of every age, ethnicity, and religion convene. I guess Jacksonville is not even ready for one of these kinds of stores.

feel free to twist my words...
I said I've never seen less than 2 people in there...that includes the middle of the day as well as at 8 or 9pm...while there today (at 4pm) there were easily 10 other people in the shop...anmd remember, that Starbucks is fairly small.
Ok, I guess they can stay open afterall.
Let me get this straight: Starbucks is making a fine profit, has plenty of customers, and is closing?
