I wonder how this will play out on the Inner City Jacksonville locations?
QuoteSEATTLE -- For a decade it appeared there was no such thing as too many Starbucks for U.S. coffee drinkers, whose willingness to buy its $4 lattes and dark drip brews rationalized a second green-and-white mermaid awning just down the street - and sometimes even a third.
But in a sign that those days are over, Starbucks Corp. announced Tuesday it will close 600 company-operated stores in the next year, as the faltering U.S. economy hastened the pain caused by the company's own rapid expansion.
Starbucks did not say which stores will be closed, only that they are spread throughout the country. But it did say 70 percent of those slated for closure had opened after the start of 2006.
To put it another way, Starbucks is closing 19 percent of all U.S. company-operated stores that opened in the last two years, Chief Financial Officer Pete Bocian said during a conference call.
About 12,000 workers, or 7 percent of Starbucks' global work force, will be affected by the closings, which are expected to take place between late July and the middle of 2009, spokeswoman Valerie O'Neil said.

Are the two downtown Starbucks locations company owned?
There are 4 Starbucks at the SJTC.
All starbucks stand alones are company owned...Heshi doesn't believe in franchising
which one will it be 11E or the Landing?? any guesses?
It would likely be 11e, since 70 per cent of the closures will be locations open less than two years. However, if what Stephen says about the rent is accurate, that would obviously alter the economics of the 11 E store.
Wow, you know we have rough times ahead if starbucks is going to downsize....
Luckily Jacksonville is still growing in terms of jobs and economic output
The Starbucks at the Domain is staying open. Thank guad. Anywho, I wonder how many Starbucks in TOD or mixed use developments are closing.
I just stopped by the Starbucks at the Landing to grab a quick snack, and I asked the cashier if that particular store or the one at 11E would be among the 600. She said both stores did enough business to survive the axe. So there you go.
Not sure I'd place much stock in the opinion of the cashier less than 24 hours after the corporate announcement was made though.........
I think the proximity of those two stores right there embodies why they are shutting 600 stores.
Well if the cashier was the manager then I would think that she would know what was going on with her store...IMHO
For what it's worth, I was told by two different employees in two different Starbucks that no Florida stores were closing, and that the majority of the closings will be in the Midwest, with the majority of those being stores that had opened in the last two years. No clue if they were managers or not, nor where they recieved that information, but...
I was told this morning that 11E starbucks is on the chopping block.
I wouldn't be surprised.
I should state, this is unconfirmed, though I think its from a reliable source.

Reports have been differing a little, i heard 5% of its stores, whatever that turns out to be. But I say GOOD! and then I also have to admit that I have fallen in love with McDonalds' (yes, i know....) Super Large Iced Hazelnut Coffee for $1.99. Best ever.

hahaha
Well its not suprising. So will the Landing Starbucks remain?

AJ, the manager of the 11 east starbucks has verified that it will be among the 600 closed.
Thats pretty sad.
That does suck... not that I am a huge fan of Starbucks but it seemed to be a thriving business downtown.
Maybe you should open up a coffee shop in that location, since it was all your idea anyway.

Good idea. :D
Im not sure where my experience comes into play, but if it makes you feel better, thats cool. I will stick to my regular paycheck, my 9-5 hours, and the ability to be home with my wife and children every night, at least for the time being. If I decide to give running a business a try, I will make sure I let you know, as you seem very concerned about my ability to run a business.
Now, back to my original point. I enjoyed that location as well, and now that its built out, it should be simple to step in, re-brand it (Dare's House Coffee, Tea, and Crumpets perhaps?) , and make it fly, since it was working. Even better, since it was your idea to begin with.
BTW, not that it matters, but I was actually kinda serious.

ps. dtp. Its kindof embarrassing that you keep expressing chagrin upon finding out that I was involved with stuff for about 20 years before you moved here.
And not to me.
I expressed chagrin? Not so much. I think it would be great if a ma and pa could step in where super-mega-corp failed, and make it work. You could give it more personality, have shows there, dress it up, and make it less sterile. As you are well aware, I have always been a big fan of ma and pa businesses, and in fact even told you once that I would prefer to spend my consumer dollar in a place where I knew it would make a difference, even if it was a little more expensive.
Geej man, take it down a notch.
When is the "Loft on Main" opening up?
I cant wait. ;)

Although the building would be amazing, Im pretty sure that the unique rent that we worked out in advance for starbucks is approaching an end, hence the choice of axing that location over the Landing location.
I'm pretty sure that the special rent deal was for 2 years....if so, it should still have about 1 year left.
Stephen, since you helped work out the deal, can you confirm?
How exciting for you.
Good for them! Losing that shop would be horrible for 11E.
If it happens though, left behind is the perfect start-up for an independent buisness owner.
I don't think they can do anything other than cry. The chain is losing money and they probably can't justify staying open for a few residents in 11 East, which has something like only 127 units or so. As Jason pointed out and Downtownparks earlier, at least the space is now built out. This will make it easier for someone else to open a business there.
Everything I've read indicated that Starbucks has been mum on the closings thus far & would be notifying targeted stores mid-July and go through March 2009. Stores were to be notified 30 days in advance - so that's all that's left for the 11E location??? Gone in August???
Source?
Smoothies are the present and future!!
Tropical Smoothie continues to grow at an insane pace in the area, and Emerald City out of Seattle is hoping to launch 10 locations in town.
Who wants coffee anyway when it's 105 degrees outside?
You can close 599 stores, but closing the 11E store rips the heart out of a growing urbanism in Jacksonvilles downtown. Perhaps sales are short in our long hot summers, perhaps you should invest in SOUTHERN SWEET TEA, with out the added crap from Seattle?
It has been said that more millions dollar "deals" have been made in the LOUNGE cars of the New York Commuter trains then any other place on earth. Your 11E location is quickly gaining on that record, your by the numbers only store chopping does NOTHING to endear you to your fans, or to our community. Example? I live by the Jacksonville Beaches... SEA-TAC airport if you will, but I drive to 11E to meet with friends, business partners and political figures. Oh that SEA-TAC remark, yeah, like driving from SEA-TAC to King Street in Seattle for the same purpose. How many Starbucks do I pass on the road? Ucountable.
To quote a line from a famous movie. "Big mistake, big, HUGE!"
Ocklawaha
I wonder if the 11E location is going to close. I was just there and they are installing new smoothie machines to serve their newest product and they have ads for it plastered all over the store. It doesnt seem like the sort of thing a company would do with a store facing imminent closure.
In any case, IMO the best way to prevent a possible closure is to patronize the place as much as possible right now.
Here is an interactive map of confirmed and rumored store closures and none are in Jacksonville proper as of yet:
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/flatpages/businesstechnology/locationsofstarbucksstoresclosingacrossthenation.html
Unless they have already received an actual 30 day notice from corporate HQ, there is no reason to assume that this store will close. Their procedure is to notify in person employees 30 days before closing the store. This has apparently not happened. So, again, patronize the store and it will stay open. Read more here:
QuoteStarbucks is closing 600 U.S. stores between now and March in an effort to boost profits. The first 50 closures were announced by the company Friday. Further closures will be announced each month after employees receive 30-day closing notices. Starbucks chief executive Howard Schultz says the company wants to inform workers about the closures in person; company insiders say Starbucks is not releasing the full list because it is still working to modify and cancel some real estate contracts. Meanwhile, Starbucks employees are telling people about closures unofficially.

Quote07/11/2008
• It looks like one of Downtown’s Starbucks will be closing after all. According to an off-duty employee of the Starbucks Corporation, the 11 E store is on the chopping block and is one of four in Jacksonville. The employee, who requested anonymity, was told the news by a manager. The employee hit the streets with a cameraman on Thursday to tape traffic along Ocean Street, interview customers and others in an attempt to show the Downtown store was successful. “We’ve only been open for a year,†said the employee. “For a lot of us who work there, it’s all we have. I don’t think the people in charge actually ever stepped foot in the store, but we’re trying to show them it’s a busy and growing store.†The employee is encouraging patrons of the 11 E Starbucks to use receipts and file comments on the company’s Web site in an effort to save it.

That's pretty f'd up by Starbucks to chop a store not even open a full year.
Another on the chopping block is likely the location at Philips and JTB.
I had heard that starbucks was actually given the space for free over a certain amount of years. I'm guessing that was bad information?
So, if they are really just about to close, then why are they installing new equipment and signage? Something doesnt make sense. Perhaps the employee was wrong or the rumor was wrong. Unless they intend to act as if everything is totally normal until the day the pull the plug, this 11E rumor just doesnt make sense.
There are 3 stores closing in Jax and 2 in Orange Park area.
Due to the fact that I don't whether or not the local Starbucks employees have been notified of the closings, I do not want to give the list of the exact locations quite yet.
I will confirm 11 E is closing since that is out of the bag. JTB/Philips is safe (not closing).
The other Starbucks closing in Jacksonville is also a very new location within the 295 loop.
The 3rd location closing in Jacksonville is South of the I-295 loop.
Two location will be closed in the Orange PArk area.
I'm shocked that all four of the SJTC Starbucks locations will remain open. Here's the official closing list:
1. 3055 CR 210 W (Johns Creek retail center at CR 210 & Nature Walk Parkway)
2. 8060 Philips Highway (Philps & Baymeadows)
3. 11 East Forsyth Street (Downtown)
4. Orange Park Mall (1910 Wells Road)
5. 410 Blanding (Kingsley @ Blanding Blvd)
6. 1907 Wells Road (Wells @ Blanding)

no. it was good information.
As already noted in this thread, its going to be interesting to see how the company breaks this lease without heavy penalties.
I asked today. I was told, they'll write a check.
Maybe a local operation like Fuel or Uncommon Grounds can make it work there.
I hope someone does something as nice as 3 Layers...
By the way anyone who hasn't been there needs to go.
It is a really great place....
