Title: Bold City Brewery to open second location downtown
Post by: Josh on November 30, 2015, 08:40:21 PM
Second location opening downtown at The Elbow next to Cowford Chophouse.

They definitely don't need the additional brewing capacity, so I wonder how much of this is trying to get in on the downtown revival, and how much is in response to Intuition moving downtown.

Good news, and good location. It should bring a new revenue stream and visibility without the cost of a large-scale brewing operation.

"We're doing it for the added exposure of being Downtown," she said.

The Downtown location will be used to brew and distribute small-batch releases, which are useful to companies that want an unusual brew for a special promotion.

"It's going to be kind of like our test kitchen," Miller said. "We'll be able to give our customers more of that variety and we'll be able to brew it right there."

Perhaps it is as they said.

I wonder why they are bothering to brew at all.  Is this a way to avoid the 3 tier system?  Why not just have a bar or bottle shop?  Seems like an unnecessary expense to me.

they allow amateur craft brewers to come in and "play" on occasion now.  I think this pretty much formalizes that program at the downtown location.

It's probably just as easy to brew the smaller stuff there, and they can still bring over kegs from the main brewery if they want. But yeah, not having to pay the middleman to sell their own beer in their own venue is probably a strong incentive.

It is great to see local companies investing in Downtown. I wish them great success.

Does this mean they will be open before Intuition?

This is really exciting! Peterbrooke just opened their retail store on Bay Street as well. I'm noticing more local entrepreneurs are choosing to be downtown because they want to be part of the growth. It kind of makes me want to move back downtown.

Wow Ben Davis, they did not need to leave Riverside either to accomplish their goals.

WTF are you talking about?  Intuition has absolutely maxed out their current location and need something larger.  Bold City started in a larger building and has been able to lease more space, so this is just a way for them to branch out.  Both breweries are joining in the effort to revitalize downtown, but Intuition needs more space anyway so they are killing 2 birds with one stone.  Stop trying to pick fights you know nothing about.

I am not a beer drinker, but I am glad to see this happening to downtown.

Let me know if they come up with a root beer though. I love craft root beers.

This is awesome, by far my fav. brewery in town. I've met the owners a few times (they even did a publix aprons cooking event) and they seem real nice.
Here you see the ripple effect of Cowford opening, and other things opening near it. Imagine what would happen around the trio if it was underway.

Best of luck to them. Hope to be warming a bar stool soon!

WTF are you talking about? Intuition plans on abandoning its home in Riverside for digs downtown. So effectively turning its back on the neighborhood. Yet Bold City is keeping its current space and tap room and customers locally in Riverside. I don't give two birds about downtown, it won't be decided with 2 more breweries opening up space. When the chips are down, the Millers decided to stay in Riverside, Ben Davis has weaseled his way out....

Ben Davis should be allowed to move his business wherever he wants to without being accused of "turning its back on" and being a "weasel".

An argument could be made that Riverside abandoned Intuition. After all, some in the neighborhood have made it very difficult for the brewery to expand and serve the community

Intuition outgrew its space and is moving to a larger, better located space within a few miles of the old one. Success of a homegrown business is something to celebrate, not whinge about.

This is the more accurate statement.  Ben & Cari did everything they could to embrace Riverside and Avondale and be a good neighbor, but the neighborhood did not give them the same courtesy.  That's largely irrelevant, however, because the reason for the move is that they completely built out their existing property and need more room. Riverside doesn't have a space that meets their new needs.  I'm enjoying watching mtrain's descent into insanity.  Very interesting stuff.

Lol. First time I've seen someone referred to as weaseling out for giving their company a chance to grow, in a manner that also improves the core of the city.

Also, it's hard to get these scaredy cats from the east side of town over into what they think is the "hood" in Riverside. Seriously, half the people in Aardwolf probably think it's the first brewery in town. Not saying these people will come downtown normally either, but they might hang out at Intuition on a game day.

Preach. Totally agree, and I can confirm the Aardwolf thing (heard it firsthand there). Personally, I think the beer at Bold City and Intuition is better than Aardwolf (Aardwolf seems to think every beer must be hoppy IMO but different strokes I guess).

It seems obvious that Intuition's spot at the sports complex will be larger than Bold City's on Bay St. Plus, I do feel like (purely anecdotal) that Intuition has a larger following than Bold City, so a relatively quiet location (think about Bay and APR when nothing is going on at The Stadium/Arena/Ballpark/Metro Park) might be better for them. I don't know that Bold City could do what Intuition is doing.

On the other hand, Bold City should have a lot of activity to feed off of, given what's around them. It's a great opportunity to get the public introduced to Bold City's beers and then attract people to the other location off Rosselle.

Mr. Davis may need a restraining order.  Your fascination with him is out of control.
