Title: Miami Dolphins Want $90M In Tax Rebates for Sun Life Stadium Renovation
Post by: finehoe on November 08, 2015, 10:28:40 AM
It seems that every year, another Miami sports team needs money. SFBJ reports the Dolphins have formally requested that the Florida Legislature refund $3M a year in taxes. Owner Stephen Ross and the NFL have funded the majority of the $350M construction on the Miami Gardens stadium up this point. Florida is very friendly to sports franchises, having passed a law that allows stadium projects that balloon to over $200M are to be reviewed for rebates. In addition to the possible rebates, the Dolphins already have Miami-Dade County on the hook for $5M-30M in incentives, depending on how many large-scale events it brings to the city. The stadium was constructed in 1987, and plans include a snazzy new roof to block the sun from blinding fans while they watch their football, new lighting and and better seat placement. The Dolphins have also claimed they will create 3,400 jobs annually, though analysts believe that stadiums only create low-income jobs.

Wasn't the last culture that grew infatuated with their stadiums and sports culture the Romans?

Are the Brits, Germans and Spaniards not?

I'll admit, the new reclining seats they showed during the Hurricane's game looked pretty nice. Just goes to show, there's a continuing race underway to one up each other on stadium perks going on across the country.

The problem is it never ends. Stadiums that are practically brand new are antiquated in less time than it takes for a newborn to start Kindergarten. At what point it is finally too much?  We are well past that point IMO.

And how in the hell does adding a roof create 3,400 jobs?

^Most of it must be temporary construction jobs. Other than that, they're probably making some of the same claims as the port. Spin off jobs as a part of increased usage of the facility (ex. Wendy's or a Holiday Inn Express opens up down the street because of increase traffic on neighboring roads). In this case, the increased usage would be special events outside of NFL football.

This is off topic, but I've always found it fascinating when people criticize modern society by likening it to Rome. Roman civilization existed in one form or another for 2200 years, made countless contributions to the world, and left a legacy that can still be felt. Elements of Roman culture are still widely known, and some of its key figures are household names even today. Why wouldn't a culture want to be like that? It's like your parents trying to convince you not to drop out of school by saying, "you know who else dropped out? Steve Jobs".

unfortunately for Miami, said Hall of Fame QB was still playing 5 years beyond when he should have retired....and that is part of the why the team has been useless for almost 2 decades.

Yeah, the canopy thing atop Sun Life may bring some nice shade, but it's very unaesthetic. It looks like something in a foreign country; Oh wait, Miami IS in a foreign country! LOL ;D

EverBank Field is not the only NFL stadium undergoing refit in Florida.

The roof is going up over SunLife in Miami right now.

^This helped them land another super bowl. It will be quite comfy when completed. However, the focus needs to be on improving the products being put on the field (Canes and Fins)!

The problem is the Super Bowl is also a money loser.  All they did now was spend money to lose money.  That is no way to run a railroad.

^Doesn't have to be. The problem with these events is when cities that really aren't set up to handle them do it (like Jacksonville did in 2005). For example, the World Cup has lost unworldly amounts of money...because countries like Brazil build these facilities that will never be used again.

On the other hand, the US and many of Europe's countries could host the World Cup TOMORROW.

The NFL and local businesses make tons of money on the Super Bowl - the problem is the host cities lose money.  The events are brought to cities under the guise they will bring in tax revenue - but none of that means squat when the event is give public subsidies and tax rebate that are greater than the additional tax revenue generated (cough cough - every corporate expansion in the US in the last 30 years).  When you lose money on every transaction you can't make up for it volume.

Things like the World Cup and Olympics are different in that they require a whole new set of venues to be created (increasing in third world countries that are poor to begin with).  The ultimate solution there is eventually going to be that there is a single permanent host city for those events.  Personally, I would like to see Athens as the permanent Summer Olympic city and maybe Vancouver for the Winter - but this is a whole other discussion.

Yep, this article is very eye opening about the cost to a city/region for hosting this fake panacea of increased revenue.

I mean, the example given says that San Francisco spent $4.8M and got $100k back. I mean, if they lost $4.7 directly, then so be it. I wouldn't have a problem with that.

Jacksonville on the other hand would spend a lot more than $4.8M to host it, which is why I think they shouldn't for a while - at least until Jacksonville has enough hotels to not need cruise ships.

Jacksonville should never host a Super Bowl ever again.

It's just not worth it.

Dont get me wrong, I want great things for Jax, but there are better ways to get there than hosting Super Bowls.

Much prefer more quality and sustainable mid tier events as opposed to the one big banana.

I love watching the NFL, but they are becoming a sponge with the "below the line" requirements that seem to keep growing annually.

Pretty soon the Super Bowl will be like Bernie Ecclestone and Formula One. The non-race requirements will have grown to the point where less venues can actually host a race because they cant fit the growing balloon of perks through the publicly funded hole.
