Thanks for this hot redneck mess called Luminaria. Amazing how an organization so worried about traffic and emergency response to the residents of Riverside and Avondale can promote this shitshow.
totally uncalled for...it is a GREAT event

I think the majority of residents in the neigborhood would disagree
I helped build kits, sell kits, set up for the event, and participated in it. RAP's intentions were as good as possible in regards to this. The way that some of the patrons behaved is beyond their control. On the whole, it was a great event. Thousands of people enjoyed the evening and communed with eachother in the holiday spirit.
Definitely a great event. I'm sure anything of that scale would have a few problems.

Has anyone made the joke lootinaria, yet?
If not, you're welcome.

I'm rolling my eyes at my self.

But really I think it's great.
I missed the event and would never want it to stop...I just really appreciate the irony.

my neighbors feel the way I do.
You always have the option of staying away and not participating. You also have the option of moving away if you don't like the things that make the neighborhood unique.
I think moving away would be better, or at least close your door, and turn off the lights. It's like complaining about a TV show. You can change the channel. Why are you in Riverside, if you don't like events. Maybe a condo would be a better option for you.

I used to love Luminaria. I grew up in the area and it was always a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit. Now, not so much and I am not alone in my feelings. Its not enjoyable anymore. And, eventually, there a kid will be seriously injured falling out of of UHaul trailer or getting run over by a car.
My point was to highlight the irony that the same organization that is so hellbent on retarding restaurant expansion, conducting traffic studies and dragging police in to tell us all how parking was going to lead to medical emergencies promotes this event.
So...one should move if they don't like something that's happening in the hood.
That will make for some interesting re reading of old threads. Where did I put that Commander thread, that's a good one to start with.

The event was amazing! People everywhere, still picking up marshmallows from the streets. Yeah, there are some little you know whats who throw hard candy, but next year, I plan to bring my Super Soaker and soak those you know whats with cold water. Anyhow, the people were great, yeah, its the redneck Christmas on the westside.
How could anyone fall out and hurt themselves, you are crawling along at less than 5 mph or stopped. We set ours out and then proceeded to go to the 5 parties we were invited to see. It was great. Sorry you feel that way, but RAP cannot police the event. Its bigger than just one group.

Well, last night was the last Luminaria in which we participate. I try my best to stay away. Unfortunately, we had early dinner plans outside the neighborhood. The resulting one-hour traffic jam to return to our house was unavoidable. I did walk up to the shops in Avondale and take in a group of rednecks heckling police, two kids jump out in front of a moving car to pick up candy on the street, and the several pickups haul ass down our street. Also, the honking until 10 pm was awesome. Merry Christmas.
The bike ride was awesome. A little hectic, but the cars were moving pretty slowly and by and large were very respectful of the cyclists and pedestrians. Not something we usually get around here. As for the problems, I don't know how it's RAP's fault or what they could do about it. Maybe it could be spread out over a weekend so the traffic wouldn't be so bad all at one time. On the other hand, it's a couple of hours one night a year.

I tend to agree that the comments about moving or not complaining sound silly. However I do like the event and hope it continues. I have had several fun hey rides over the years.
We enjoyed it. The parks looked amazing with the flickering lights. Our neighbors got together for a festive evening. The churches lined their walkways and opened their doors. Neighborhoods should find ways to celebrate community and quality of life.
Hey RAP!......Thank You!
When I moved to Avondale twenty years ago, that first luminary caught me by surprise in that more casual, less publicized era. At dusk I went out on the balcony and there were the luminaries!
Back then it would have been hard to imagine a Bike Parade on the scale of what we enjoy now. What a blast to ride last night. Marshmallow battle with kids. I took a direct hit, six year old squealing in delight. "Merry Christmas!" cheer echoed.
Ended up at the Miller residence on St Johns, neighborhood open house.
My wife opted to stay at home this year. And there were notably fewer luminaries than past years on our street in the Avondale Rural fringe. I bet we'll both participate in the Bike Parade next year.
Today's TU piece "One dead after Sunday morning shooting on Jacksonville Westside" profiles comments of residents west of us that are hoping to move for much more grave reasons.
:-*
Funny how some folks will squeal when THEIR travel is impeded or THEIR driveway is blocked. Shoe pinches a little does it?
So, wait... I was out of town for Luminaria.. did the neighborhood implode while I was gone?

You could moved to Springfield, it's mostly quiet but occasionally we get people lighting off firecrackers to celebrate the holidays.
