Title: Golf Pro admits to the Tebow ads
Post by: spuwho on November 19, 2013, 08:03:47 AM
Per ESPN.com

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9997958/former-pga-tour-golfer-dewey-arnette-reveals-guy-tim-tebow-newspaper-ad (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9997958/former-pga-tour-golfer-dewey-arnette-reveals-guy-tim-tebow-newspaper-ad)

Golf pro behind 'Sign Tim Tebow' ad

Dewey Arnette insists he's not the guy to organize a rally or publicly urge others to stand up for something, yet the golf professional, who has tutored the likes of Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke, has found himself behind the movement to bring Tim Tebow to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Arnette -- who spends time in Jacksonville, Fla., and the Grenadines, and charges $400 an hour for his wisdom on the links -- says he was the one who spent $1,200 to buy an ad in the Monday editions of the Florida Times-Union.

Ex-PGA Tour golfer Dewey Arnette took out this $1,200 ad in Monday's Florida-Times Union urging Jaguars boss Shahid Khan to ink Tim Tebow.
"I don't really get behind causes and hold up signs," Arnette said. "But this was different."

"Dear Mr. Khan," the ad says, referring to team owner Shahid Khan. "Sign Tim Tebow & we will fill the stadium!" The ad is signed by "The Citizens of Jacksonville."

ESPN asked the Florida Times-Union ad sales department to reveal who was behind the ad. Citing confidentiality, the paper declined to reveal who represented "The Citizens Of Jacksonville" until Arnette gave his permission. It turns out Arnette has been behind a slew of recent Tebow propaganda.

In the past six weeks, Arnette and his son John have gauged the reaction after holding up "Tebow to Jax" signs in Jacksonville's San Marco Square and handing out Tebow T-shirts in the streets. The Arnettes also have bought ads on radio stations and billboards around town, and have paid to have Tebow phrases written on airplane banners that have flown over stadiums. Dewey Arnette even spent money to put "Tebow to Jacksonville" messages on place mats at the Metro Diner, a local hot spot. The owner of the diner, Arnette said, was so supportive, he gave Arnette a bigger ad than what he paid for.

Tebow, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2007 while at the University of Florida, played his high school ball in Jacksonville.

"I don't want to come off as odd," Arnette said. "The thing is, having done these things, I know how supportive people are of Tim Tebow around here. And our standards for the team are just so low right now."

DiRoccoThe Jaguars' rebuilding project is in need of players who can make an impact on the field. Tim Tebow is not one of them, writes Michael DiRocco.

In two years' time, Tebow has gone from getting a playoff victory as the starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos to being out of the league. He played sparingly last season with the Jets and was cut from the New England Patriots on Aug. 31.

For their part, the Jaguars, who have lost nine of their first 10 games this season, have seemed disinterested in Tebow. Khan, when asked about the idea of signing Tebow last month, told TMZ, "We need a lot of good players."

Arnette, whose record of eight straight birdies in a PGA Tour event stood for 12 years, says he's a realist.

"I expect it to completely fall on deaf ears," Arnette said. "But I just wanted to give it a try. Yeah, this isn't one of those real injustices in the world. But I feel bad for him. He deserves a shot."

In the meantime, Tebow recently signed with CAA broadcasting agent Nick Khan (no relation to the Jaguars' owner) to figure out a possible on-air future.

Often heard: "If the Jaguars signed Tim Tebow, the stadium would be full."

Rarely heard: "If the Jaguars signed Tim Tebow, I would buy season tickets for myself and my family."

Spoiler alert: The 55,000 loyal Jags fans who have continued to show up each Sunday despite years of futility are the audience that the team should be super-serving. Not the 5,000 to 10,000 entitled, daffy, couch-parking "Gators" who are smarter than every GM in the league and have the special ability to credit 100% percent of the Broncos playoff run to Tebow while simultaneously ignoring Tebow's performance in New York/New England and forgetting the fact that he had a chance to play here and said no.

These dopes would buy exactly one ticket, complain about concession prices, and then call for the firing of the entire coaching staff and offensive line when Timmy performed to the low standards that he has set for himself throughout his NFL career. Within two weeks, you'd be hearing, "If you tailor the offense around Tebow, the stadium would be full." And then, "If you hire a head coach that can work better with Timmy, even God himself wOuLd bE iN tHe BuD ZoNe~!"

Speaking of which, I was in church a few weeks ago, and the minister stopped the service to say a congregation-wide prayer that the Jaguars would sign Tim Tebow. Thought I was going to puke in the aisle. Was almost enough to make me crawl over several sets of pews, stick my fist into the offering bucket, retrieve my $20, and make a mad dash out the door. I also fantasized about standing up during the middle of the solemn prayer and screaming "HE'S NOT AN NFL QUARTERBACK."

Dare I ask which church?

Dare I ask why the pastor isn't aware of the couple of dozen Christian athletes who play for the Jaguars each year?

Dare I continue to wonder how this family has mesmerized so many people into thinking there is only one Christian athlete in the NFL?

Dare I wonder who exactly people are worshipping when they are praying for such matters in church, asking Tebow to autograph Bibles, and referring to a common prayer posture by a failed quarterback's name?

I take it the $1,200 ad was really a donation to help keep the TU afloat because that's about all it achieves.

I don't believe it was FBC, otherwise it would have been all over the news unless it was done on a Wednesday evening.  FBC broadcasts the Sunday morning and evening services on the internet.

I just wish Mr Dewey did not think he speaks for all the citizens of Jacksonville which he sorta implies in this ad. A bit arrogant. Sounds like a tea party nut job to me. Not to mention never heard this pro before this.

From everything I have read, the elder Dewey isn't a citizen of Jacksonville. And his son sounds like some sort of wannabe football handicapper.

You know, I'd hate to be turned away at the pearly gates for publicly disparaging a church by name, especially when their heart did seem to be in the right place (less about his performance as a football player, more about his ability to set a positive example and bring people to Christianity), but I will say that it was not FBC :)

I was a guest of a friend, and man, modern churches can be so weird for a guy who grew up in the Catholic system. Could never imagine my old priests talking serious about quarterback issues. At best, we got one recycled joke each year about the Thanksgiving turkey being too dry.

I have no objection to rooting for an athlete because of his faith or good example.  What I do have an objection to is the blind delusion that Tebow is the only Christian or positive example of an athlete in the universe.

There are scores of current and former Jaguars who are overt about their faith, perform great charitable activities that benefit Jacksonville, or both.  Most of them had more NFL success than He Who Shall Not Be Named also.  When's someone going to pay attention to their faith or works?  Why aren't local pastors aware of the Russell Allens and Brad Meesters and Josh Scobees and Tyson Alualus?  Why the obsession with someone who used to live here?  Rashean Mathis is from here, is involved with local charities, and played very well for the Jaguars for ten years.  What's the difference between him and Tebow, other than that Mathis was a much better NFL player and appeared in many fewer vaguely suggestive photos?

The article was wrong. He is a citizen of Jacksonville. San Marco to be specific. He's also the guy funding the fly-overs with the Tebow flags...funding the organization efforts. Anything you see something Tebow oriented, he's probably funded it.

He's "a Christian" and loves how much Tebow talks about/exposes his religion. This isn't about football to Arnette. It's about religion.

Then why wasn't he an avid backer of David Garrard, and why isn't he an avid fan of Tyson Alualu?

I'm a Christian and my passes wobble less than Tebow's do.  He might as well advocate for me to start.

Who is this guy? A PGA golf pro? The guy doesn't even have a wiki page. I cannot wait until the expiration day of that dumb billboard signage in the State St/Mathews Bridge Expressway area; Talk about something that make us look like a hicktown. Thanks alot Dewey for this embarrassing effort that continues to fall on deaf ears. SMDH....

Worse is the string of Camping World "bring Tebow to Jacksonville" billboards on 95.  Everyone entering the state gets to see those.

The guy lives in San Marco and commutes daily 7 months a year to Vero Beach where he has an apartment and this is someone whom is believed to be logical and sensible? Wowsers, and to think people think I'm nuts for flying to NYC for Monday through Thursday. Maybe I should change to daily flights, shorter commute than him an imagine the air miles I could rack up! Not to mention all the "wisdom" points I could score.

Or on any other number of worthy projects rather than an ineffectual billboard, flyovers, and print ads.

Did he also bankroll those awesome rallies that drew audiences of 25 media members and 6 members of the public?

Yes, these are the kind of enduring fans that Dewey wants us to attract.  From the T-U Facebook page:

"Until the Jags get Tebow I refuse to buy a ticket, get a tee shirt, buy a sticker, or say one good thing about the Jags. GET TEBOW AND I WILL SUPPORT but until then screw the Jags."

You can't reason with zealots...

I don't know what you all expect

Knowing the guy, this doesn't surprise me at all. The only surprising thing is that everyone here is surprised!

We all knew this was going on. Now we just know whose funding it.

I'm continuously surprised that these people worship one athlete only while completely ignoring the Christian athletes who are actually playing and doing good in the community.  I constantly run into Tebow cultists who announce that there are no Christians or good role models on the Jaguars.  Certainly other than a few isolated examples like the Brad Meester story with Luke Akerstrom, the T-U has made no effort to cover Jaguar players doing good but has fallen all over itself to praise Tebow's every move.

You know the man; in your estimation, does he have the slightest awareness of the positive role models and men of faith who play or have played for the Jaguars?  Or the slightest self-awareness that he's not exactly setting the greatest Christian example in spending thousands of dollars on a frivolous, navel-gazing PR campaign?

No. (To both questions.)
