Downtown’s Main Street Bridge will be closed from 8 p.m. Thursday until 5:30 a.m. Friday for the shooting of a music video. The Main Street Bridge will be congested beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, but it won't be from traffic or boats passing underneath.
Instead, the Downtown drawbridge will be the site of a music video being recorded for rapper Rick Ross for his song "Box Chevy."

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office will be using hold-and-release traffic patterns until 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Jeffrey Harper, executive producer at Miami-based Dre Films, said Wednesday that about 30 staff and production crew were en route to Jacksonville for the shoot and will stay through the weekend using local amenities.

Dre Films and Hollywood-based Facet Media LLC secured the permit for the bridge closure, according to the sheriff's office.

Harper said the reasons behind choosing Jacksonville for the production include Ross referring to the city in his song and the bridge being "historic, iconic."

In addition to the bridge, Harper said the video would include the Florida Theatre.

He said Ross and producers were in town last weekend to see the locales in person and liked the visuals enough to decide on making Jacksonville the production location.

Harper said production costs vary, but the Jacksonville shoot would be about $30,000.

He said he worked with the City and Todd Roobin of the Film & Television Department on arranging the deal, obtaining permits and making the production a reality.

"He's been great, very helpful," Harper said of Roobin.

Roobin was out of the office and unavailable for comment about the project and the economics and work behind such deals.

Mayor Alvin Brown spokeswoman Aleizha Batson said the City is assessing the economic impact of the production and would make the information available when it is compiled.

Harper advised that curious onlookers should not show during the production, which combined with hold-and-release traffic management could slow production.

From Ross's verse on Kanye's "Devil in a New Dress"

QuoteDifferent traps, I was getting mail from
Polk County, Jacksonville, rep Melbourne

Rap Genius explains (http://rapgenius.com/Kanye-west-devil-in-a-new-dress-lyrics)

QuoteHoly triple entendre Batman!

• A “trap” is a drug-dealing spot
• He keeps running his fancy cars through speed traps (thus getting tickets in the mail)
• Ross is receiving mail from his prison homies (Polk County, Jacksonville and Melbourne are all home to famous correctional facilities)

Melbourne is not home to any famous correctional institution....  I'm not aware of one is Jacksonville either.

Neither is Polk. These lyrics are from a guy making songs to make money.

QuoteWilliam Leonard Roberts II was born in Coahoma County, Mississippi, and raised in Carol City, Florida, near Miami. After graduating from Miami Carol City Senior High School, he later attended the historically black college Albany State University on a football scholarship. He derived his stage name from the drug trafficker "Freeway" Rick Ross, to whom he has no connection. Ross worked as a correctional officer for 18 months between December 1995 until his resignation in June 1997.

After being signed to Suave House Records, former label for rap duo 8Ball & MJG, he eventually signed a deal with Slip-n-Slide Records, which has been under the Def Jam umbrella since 2006. While signed to Slip-n-Slide, Ross toured with fellow rapper Trick Daddy and made guest performances on other Slip-n-Slide albums.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Ross

From the real Freeway Rick Ross:

QuoteThis is Freeway Rick Ross, I’m writing this to reply to William “Rozay” Robert’s interview with Funkmaster Flex addressing my lawsuit. In the streets a name is everything, in Hip Hop it is a career maker.  William claims that we are both street dudes and could’ve talked; he and his music label had that chance and thought they could ignore me because I had a life sentence. In prison when you have a federal life sentence you’re considered the walking dead, it is exactly for this reason that they dodged me when I sent multiple requests from prison to sit down about the use of my name and image. When I finally chased William down through my guys on the street, we talked via phone, he gave me a number, and said he would come down to the prison to “chop it up”. He never came, then changed the phone number.

On the street when you take someone’s name and image the first step is to properly approach them, then you can be the lil homie, if they accept. But because he thought I was the walking dead he just stole my name and image. I’m a street dude from LA, it’s documented. William is not a street dude. He is a guy from a good background that had to pass background tests to become an Officer. There’s nothing wrong with being an Officer, just don’t use my name if you were one to gain traction in rap, especially without asking me. I didn’t get treated well by police, they planted drugs and physically beat me, so to have an officer use my name to get into rap is disrespectful.

Yeezy's 'Devil in a New Dress' is one of my favorite songs. It's nice that Jax is gonna get a lil' exposure with the Ross vid. Rozay definitely has his fair share of controversies and troubles...

Couldn't agree more, Avonjax and ChrisUFGator.  It perpetuates hatred and anger and it's popular.  It would be like listening to socialist propaganda all the time -remember what Tokyo Rose did to the troops in WW II?  (For those of you not even born yet, Tokyo Rose was the only radio show in Japan, and she would play popular American music and then say stuff to tear down the GI's morale).  Kind of the same thing happening here.  What I want to  know is, (in the vernacular of the 1960's),  WHO is the MAN who is supposedly "keepin' 'em down", now?  He doesn't exist.  They are enjoying the myth too much.  Know what they call it when white folks pump themselves up with anger?  It has three initials.  Is this any less scary on the other side of the fence?  Not for me.

Could you give me some examples of the kind of hip-hop you're talking about? I'd be happy to provide you with numerous counterexamples of rap that doesn't fit into your narrow, uninformed view.

Im not a rap or hip hop fan at all really, so I dont have a problem with it either way. Whatever the case, Rick Ross is main stream and EXTREMELY popular, so for our city to be showcased on a national platform is fine with me, regardless of the genre of music.

For what it's worth, I do like some rap. When I said it's gibberish, I meant Rick Ross. NO shame in that Biggy, 2pac, Dre, Snoop game. I grew out of my rap phase years ago, but some of that stuff is gold. It's the new stuff I can't stand...you know, talking about bling, crack, hoes, cars, etc.

Well now some of Biggy stuff was exactly clean now. But I loved his music also! I think because he was creative and I also loved the beats to his song.

I like his music because each song is almost like story-telling (in a weird way). The lyrics, no matter how whack, actually mattered. The beats were good, and there was a level of greatness to it.

I never could get into him. I tried, though. I think the second album was really ruined by Puff Daddy's vocal "contributions" to all of the tracks. I did like "Mo' Money Mo' Problems" though.

I'll admit I liked biggy, and I liked a lot of hip hop in the 90s, it was still music back then. Rick Ross is a different story though, I just can't listen to it, I don't know what it is, it's just like fingernails on a blackboard. The fact that I'm in my 30s now and have developed allergies to hipsters, facial piercings, etc. has, I'm sure, nothing whatsoever to do with it. I'm not getting old, it's just one real big disturbing coincidence.

but a lot of people in Jacksonville suffer from that sort of prejudice & bias, not everyone is allowed to play Jacksonville. Now if this was T McGrall or Skynard type of band shooting a video on the brigde the trolls would hold their stones. Rick Ross & production staff choose Jacksonville Florida to do his version of craft, plus he choose to showcase downtown.

Oy. I love hip hop-- but those lyrics make me squirm. Makes me nostalgic for lyrics of the kind that Tribe Called Quest consistently offered.

Ugh, why is it rap "music" always has to talk about how much money they have, how many "hoes" they have and how big their man-parts are? Maybe I'm old, but this is really really bad.

Rap music has always been really really bad. It got bad in the 80's . (2 Live Crew anyone? )But hey, like I always say, If I dont like something, I dont listen to it. For example, I hate country. Instead of talking about how stupid it is, I just dont listen to it. ( and country sounds really really stupid to me  ;D )

I can listen to just about anything now but I grew up on rap, r&b, jazz and blues. There's different styles of rap out there, just like any other genre.  If Luke's Me So Horny isn't your style, perhaps André 3000's style is your speed?

Big Boi f/ Andre 3000 and Raekwon
Royal Flush lyrics
[Big Boi:]
I am
The wrong ni--a to cross and the first ni--a to jam
With the A K cuatro siete or a microphone in hand
God dam
Generation uno? dungeon? found
The lab is filled with potions of emotions out the ass
I laugh
When you think that you have seen the last
But it's only the beginning my ni--a don't be so fast
As gas [? ]
Or slow it down to a screeching halt
Impeach the president cus he don't think before he talk
Iraq
God dam
Now he gunning for Iran
North Korea got that sh-t that make L.A. look like Japan
Island
Nah man
More like the Caribbean
[? ] and take a voyage to Atlan-tis

[Raekwon:]
[? ]

[3 Stacks:]
Styles will change
They say change is dang-erous
As a king standing on the terrace
While his [? ] pointing up at the rightful men
Cowards [? ] never know when your life will end
Then... live like there ain't no 'morrow
And if one come then this the motto
Now I put message in bottle
You go to the nearest beach and open your car door
And you walk to the place where the sea meets the land
Yeah it's easier to run the street than walk in the sand
Hey I'm talking young man
As if chalk in my hand
I will take yo' little ass to school
It's cool
When the kids call me sonny, the hood calls me stacks
The bees call me honey, Hollywood calls me back
Crack and I have a lot in common
We both come up in the 80s and we keep that bass pumpin'
Now that's a nega-tive comparison
Embarassin'
Unfortunate that if you come up fortunate
The street considers you lame
I thought the name of the game
Was to have a better life
I guess it ain't what a shame
I don't slang, never slung
But I'm one with the slum
That has a name well fitting
[? ] getting
No wonder why they called it the trap
So watch your tail
And I'm not kidding
The rats and mice would give advice
They say that you can paint and draw
Get out of here
Go show them that we're more than slangin' raw
That's when I broke into my big Rube impression
And I tried to enlighten but that night a learned a lesson
That the morals that you think you got go out the window
When all the other kids are fresh and they got new Nintendo
Wiis
And yo' child is down on her knees
Praying hard up to God for a Whopper with cheese
Do you b) Hit the street hard with a flare
Or do you a) Go for school for heating and air
Dare making under seven
But make a crooked killing
Or do a bit of both until your holding on a million
Brilliant
You got one foot in and one foot out
You put yo' left foot back in and then you shake it all about
You do the Hokey Pokey 'til you turn your life around
That's what it's all about
3000 out
1bf0

"Parents Just Don't Understand"

You know parents are the same no matter time nor place
They don't understand that us kids are gonna make some mistakes
So to you, all the kids all across the land
There's no need to argue, parents just don't understand

I remember one year
My mom took me school shopping
It was me, my brother, my mom, oh, my pop, and my little sister
All hopped in the car
We headed downtown to the Gallery Mall
MY mom started bugging with the clothes she chose
I didn't say nothing at first
I just turned up my nose
She said, "What's wrong? This shirt cost $20"
I said, "Mom, this shirt is plaid with a butterfly collar!"
The next half hour was the same old thing
My mother buying me clothes from 1963
And then she lost her mind and did the ultimate
I asked her for Adidas and she bought me Zips!
I said, "Mom, what are you doing, you're ruining my rep"
She said, "You're only sixteen, you don't have a rep yet"
I said, "Mom, let's put these clothes back, please"
She said "no, you go to school to learn not for a fashion show"
I said, "This isn't Sha Na Na, come on Mom, I'm not Bowzer
Mom, please put back the bell-bottom Brady Bunch trousers
But if you don't want to I can live with that but
You gotta put back the double-knit reversible slacks"
She wasn't moved - everything stayed the same
Inevitably the first day of school came
I thought I could get over, I tried to play sick
But my mom said, "No, no way, uh-uh, forget it"
There was nothing I could do, I tried to relax
I got dressed up in those ancient artifacts
And when I walked into school, it was just as I thought
The kids were cracking up laughing at the clothes Mom bought
And those who weren't laughing still had a ball
Because they were pointing and whispering
As I walked down the hall
I got home and told my Mom how my day went
She said, "If they were laughing you don't need them,
Cause they're not good friends"
For the next six hours I tried to explain to my Mom
That I was gonna have to go through this about 200 more times
So to you all the kids all across the land
There's no need to argue
Parents just don't understand

Oh-kay, here's the situation
My parents went away on a week's vacation and
They left the keys to the brand new Porsche
Would they mind?
Umm, well, of course not
I'll just take it for a little spin
And maybe show it off to a couple of friends
I'll just cruise it around the neighborhood
Well, maybe I shouldn't
Yeah, of course I should
Pay attention, here's the thick of the plot
I pulled up to the corner at the end of my block
That's when I saw this beautiful girlie girl walking
I picked up my car phone to perpetrate like I was talking
You should've seen this girl's bodily dimensions
I honked my horn just to get her attention
She said, "Was that for me?"
I said, "Yeah"
She said, "Why?"
I said, "Come on and take a ride with a helluva guy"
She said, "How do I know you're not sick?
You could be some deranged lunatic"
I said, "C'mon toots - my name is the Prince =
Beside, would a lunatic have a Porsche like this?"
She agreed and we were on our way
She was looking very good and so was I, I must say - word
We hit McDonald's, pulled into the drive
We ordered two Big Macs and two large fries with Cokes
She kicked her shoes off onto the floor
She said, "Drive fast, speed turns me on"
She put her hand on my knee, I put my foot on the gas
We almost got whiplash, I took off so fast
The sun roof was open , the music was high
And this girl's hand was steadily moving up my thigh
She had opened up three buttons on her shirt so far
I guess that's why I didn't notice that police car
We're doing ninety in my Mom's new Porsche
And to make this long story short - short
When the cop pulled me over I was scared as hell
I said, "I don't have a license but I drive very well, officer"
I almost had a heart attack that day
Come to find out the girl was a twelve-year-old runaway
I was arrested, the car was impounded
There was no way for me to avoid being grounded
My parents had to come off from vacation to get me
I'd rather be in jail than to have my father hit me
My parents walked in
I got my grip, I said, "Ah, Mom, Dad, how was your trip?"
They didn't speak - I said, "I want to plead my case"
But my father just shoved me in the car by my face
That was a hard ride home, I don't know how I survived
They took turns - one would beat me while the other was driving
I can't believe it, I just made a mistake
Well parents are the same no matter time nor place
So to you all the kids all across the land
Take it from me, parents just don't understand

Miami

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Miami, uh, uh
Southbeach, bringin the heat, uh
Haha, can y'all feel that
Can y'all feel that
Jig it out, uh

Here I am in the place where I come let go
Miami the base and the sunset low
Everyday like a mardi gras everybody party all day
No work all play okay
So we sip a little something lay the rest the spill
Me an Charlie at the bar running up a high bill
Nothin less than I'll when we dress to kill
Everytime the ladies pass, they be like (Hi Will)
Can y'all feel me, all ages and races
Real sweet faces
Every different nation, Spanish, Haitian, Indian, Jamaican
Black, White, Cuban, and Asian
I only came for two days of playing
But every time I come I always wind up staying
This the type of town I could spend a few days in
Miami the city that keeps the roof blazing

Party in the city where the heat is on
All night on the beach till the break of dawn
Welcome to Miami (bienvenido a Miami)
Bouncing in the club where the heat is on
All night on the beach till the break of dawn
I'm going to Miami
Welcome to Miami

Yo I heard the rainstorms ain't nothin to mess with
But I can't feel a drip on the strip, it's a trip
Ladies half-dressed, fully equipped
And they be screaming out, (Will we loved your last hit)
So I'm thinking I'm a scoot me something hot
In this south-sea meringue melting pot
Hottest club in the city and it's right on the beach
Temperature get to ya it's about to reach
Five-hundred degrees
In the carribean seas, with the hot mommies
Screamin (ay, papi)
Every time I come to town, they be spotting me
In the drop Bentley, ain't no stopping me
So, cash in your dough
And flow to this fashion show
Pound for pound anywhere you go
Yo ain't no city in the world like this
An if you ask how I know I gots to plead the fifth

Party in the city where the heat is on
All night on the beach till the break of dawn
Welcome to Miami (bienvenido a miami)
Bouncing in the club where the heat is on
All night on the beach till the break of dawn
I'm going to Miami
Welcome to Miami

Don't get me wrong, Chi-town got it going on
And New York is the city that we know don't sleep
And we all know that L.A. and Philly stay jiggy
But on the sneak, Miami bringing heat for real
Y'all don't understand
I never seen so many Dominican women with cinnamon tans
MIRA this is the plan
Take a walk on the beach draw a heart in the sand
Gimmie your hand
Damn you look sexy
Let's go to my yacht in the West Keys
Ride my jet skis loungin in the palm trees
Cause you gotta have cheese for the summerhouse piece on South Beach
Water so clear you can see to the bottom
Hundred thousand dollar cars, every body got em
Ain't no surprise to see in the club to see Sly Stallone
Miami my second home

Party in the city where the heat is on
All night on the beach till the break of dawn
Welcome to Miami (bienvenido a miami)
Bouncing in the club where the heat is on
All night on the beach till the break of dawn
I'm going to Miami
Welcome to Miami

You criticize the entire genre of rap but mention your speed is the Rolling Stones? LMAO!  I don't have anything against the Rolling Stones but you sound kind of hypocritical.  Those guys were some of the biggest drug users and sex abusers around.  Their lyrics wouldn't be found on a cloud in Heaven either.

Brown Sugar Lyrics - Rolling Stones

Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields,
Sold in a market down in new orleans.
Scarred old slaver know he's doin alright.
Hear him whip the women just around midnight.
Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good
(a-ha) brown sugar, just like a young girl should
A-huh.

Drums beating, cold english blood runs hot,
Lady of the house wondrin where it's gonna stop.
House boy knows that he's doin alright.
You should a heard him just around midnight.
Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good
(a-ha) brown sugar, just like a black girl should
A-huh.

I bet your mama was a tent show queen, and all her boy
Friends were sweet sixteen.
Im no schoolboy but I know what I like,
You should have heard me just around midnight.

Ah brown sugar how come you taste so good
(a-ha) brown sugar, just like a young girl should.

I said yeah, I said yeah, I said yeah, I said
Oh just like a, just like a black girl should.

I said yeah, I said yeah, I said yeah, I said
Oh just like, just like a black girl should.

Probably so.  It's not like Rick Ross is Michael Jackson or Jay-Z. The Stones have been around for over 50 years.  It's amazing one can abuse cocaine and heroin for so long and still be around after all those decades. They should be remembered for that alone. Nevertheless, that doesn't make what they do, promote and sing any more morally correct than the stuff you're railing off against.

It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)"

That's great, it starts with an earthquake
Birds and snakes, an aeroplane, and Lenny Bruce is not afraid

Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn
World serves its own needs, don't misserve your own needs
Feed it up a knock, speed, grunt, no, strength
The ladder starts to clatter with a fear of height, down, height
Wire in a fire, represent the seven games
And a government for hire and a combat site
Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry with the Furies breathing down your neck

Team by team, reporters baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped
Look at that low plane, fine, then
Uh-oh, overflow, population, common group
But it'll do, save yourself, serve yourself
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed
Tell me with the Rapture and the reverent in the right, right
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam fight, bright light
Feeling pretty psyched

It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

Six o'clock, TV hour, don't get caught in foreign tower
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn
Lock him in uniform, book burning, bloodletting
Every motive escalate, automotive incinerate
Light a candle, light a motive, step down, step down
Watch your heel crush, crush, uh-oh
This means no fear, cavalier, renegade and steering clear
A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives, and I decline

It's the end of the world as we know it (I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine (It's time I had some time alone)
I feel fine (I feel fine)

It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine (It's time I had some time alone)

The other night I dreamt a nice continental drift divide
Mountains sit in a line, Leonard Bernstein
Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce, and Lester Bangs
Birthday party, cheesecake, jellybean, boom
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam but neck, right? Right

It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it (It's time I had some time alone)
It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine (It's time I had some time alone)

Rap an art form?  Decidedly yes.  But as art does it enhance the lives of listeners or degrade them?  I love art but what I do not love is a medium that continuously portrays women as sexual objects of the lowest form calling them whores and identifying them by their crotches.  While some in society may have the intellectual maturity to discern the "art" in this form, many simply do not. In the case of those individuals, this "art" form can have a really lousy impact on mind, soul and spirit.  The  video clip included in this thread is telling a story to be sure and it would be of value to look at who was in the listening audience while this "artist" edified his message of nigga's and smelly pussy's.  Several young children were in front of this man while he spewed his line of obscenities and that is really something to be concerned about and ashamed of in Jacksonville regardless of race or level of "cool".   Recently we saw the FB post of a teenage boy who allegedly shot a baby in the face in Brunswick killing him.  The byline the youth chose was a lyric from a Rap song proudly declaring a murder up in someones neighborhood.  Art?  Yes definitely and an art form that has some serious negative ramifications in today's world.

Do you hate jazz and folk then?
While I am sure a lengthy discourse about music as art and what does or does not qualify as offensive would be a fun intellectual exercise, inviting one was not the intent of my commentary. It was and is pretty clearly aimed at the degradation of women, especially Black women in the form of "Gangsta Rap".  Delivering that message is sad enough but  to use young children in the manner displayed in the video of this particular artist is really unfortunate.  There is no great wisdom to be found in allowing small children to dance in front of a grown man spouting obscene words while women are dancing like dogs in heat all around him as he refers to his listeners and others as nigga's.   That is my point in totality and really requires no further edification on my part.

Stephen, I know how you love to exchange ideas on topics of this sort, but for my part I have said what I felt was important to say. I am pretty much finished on the topic of this rapper, his portrayal of women and his choice to have children participate in what is clearly adult entertainment.  ;)

QuoteIt was literally the most explicit (and to tasteful society, the most vulgar) thing that the music form could be called.  Certainly an 'adult' kind of music.

Indeed it is an "adult" kind of music.  The inclusion of small children in his video shines a bright light upon the reasoning of lack there of on the part of this "artist" and the "parents" of those children who somehow rationalized that letting their kids participate was an okay thing to do.  Exposing children to "smutty art" is not good parenting and not a way to promote music.

This topic/thread is been a doozie….     I have listened to everyone’s points and I will add my 2 cents.
My view maybe a bit different from most people, but I come from a musical background. I’m of the Hip Hop era, but I am a student of music. Rock & Jazz both had this negative connotation from the “older” generation when they became mainstream….

I’ve had to have this “rap music” fight on numerous occasions with everyone from club owners to sports teams front offices.   Check the Billboard charts and see what the top 10-20 POPular songs are.  Count how many are rap/hip-hop songs…..  Rap has slid into POPular music and POP culture.   People don’t like what they don’t understand, and most people don’t know the origins/struggle of the music.

I’m not going to carry a flag for Rick Ross here.  He’s an ok rapper… Not the best, but definitely not the worse.  I will just say his lyrics fall under the “free speech” category, but please stop lumping all Hip Hop rap together.   Taylor Swift and Charlie Pride are both country artist but do they sing the same type of songs?

The bottom line here is Love it or Hate it….   Rick Ross is a MAJOR national Hip Hop artist who I’m sure has a large fan base here in duval county.   Since he mentioned Jacksonville in a few songs he decided to come here and shoot a video.  Not “gangsta style” (where you just show up at locations with a camera and film until the police come and chase you away) but pulled/paid for the proper permits and I’m sure brought a little economic growth to the city.

I heard he really blessed a few strip clubs with some economic freedom while he was here.

I thought anything that moved our great city forward was good?????

Wow, now that I know he blessed a few strip clubs with economic freedom while visiting makes his time in Jacksonville a real treat for the community and his "art" something worth degrading women over and exposing small children to first hand.  Certainly we should all fall in line when it comes to RAP because of billboard charts.  ::)

RAP is so much more than an individual artist like Rick Ross and his chosen lifestyle and lyrical topics. Nevertheless, it's a free country and we all have a choice to decide what genres we prefer and don't.  If you don't like it, be like me and conservative talk shows. Switch the channel and move on.

I always do so Ennis, however when a public discussion comes up about it as it did in this thread, I am compelled as a woman to say that the foul objectifying of females in such a venue is not acceptable to most of us regardless of the intent.  In this case the "rapper" chose to have some children in his video while sharing his obscene verse and that should never be okay.  It's kind of like the head in the sand photo you shared on the other thread.  :)  Ignoring it doesn't make it go away but commenting on it may have some degree of impact over time.

Or who forced the females to show up half naked to be objectified? We can't blame everything on music or the guy in the video.  There's a lot of personal responsibility involved as well.

Mr Controversy caught some flak with yet another group of people; This time it's feminist saying that he condones rape. One of his lyrics went along line of (don't quote me verbatim)"I slipped her a molly (ecstasy) and enjoyed 'that' and she didn't even know".  So these people went to protest at a NYC Reebok store, a company that endorses Ross.

Corporate America controls hip hop now, they have been since 1999, maybe even earlier than that.

Being an Jax native, I do enjoy some of Rick Ross songs, and I love Box & Bubble Chevys. He chose Jacksonville for his video. Good for him and good for everyone in Duval who benefit in some way.

Based on the lyrics:

He tried to to lift his friends up and help them out financially but they were all talk, unreliable and untrustworthy. He's done with them. He's moving on. By the way, he's doing really well with the ladies so much so that he can recognize a woman is on her way towards him from a block away. He has a plan to be with her before she even realizes it.  He can also recognize when untrustworthy foes are headed his way. He'll take down his enemies before they are able to confront him. He's always one step ahead when it comes to the ladies and when it comes to his enemies.

His enemies want to see him thrown in jail and the mother of his child wants to take a cut of his salary. Essentially, a lot of people want to see him fail. Yet he is secure enough financially and psychologically that in the midst of the attacks he can go and buy a really nice paint job for his chevy.

His enemies can't stand to see his success so they'll ruin the nice things he buys. They all want to see him fail. He warns them to bring their machine guns when they see him come after them. He reiterates that he tried to help his enemies but since they dismissed his help and are persecuting him he has decided to put them to death.

He goes onto explain how he buys drugs wholesale then sells them at a retail level. He takes a about a half pound of cocaine to Polk County. While in Bartow he breaks down the half pound of cocaine into smaller packages. He drives to Belle Glade in his box Chevy while on his "car phone." Then he goes back up to Jacksonville where he has purchased a condo and where he fills up his car with more cocaine.

He reiterates that his journey started with a box chevy but because of his success he was able to purchase a blue lexus. His girlfriend stuck with him and so he bought her a new lexus. He has so much money that he purchased his girlfriend her own salon. Now, she can get her hair done every day. She can do whatever she wants. He remembers that his journey began in a box chevy but now he owns a watch worth $180,000.

Still, his enemies are demeaning his success. He mocks them by telling them to be patient. He or others are coming to kill them.

He has made millions in Ockeechobee. He's taking millions with "okey dokey?"

Him and a female take an ecstasy pill. She's sweating. He insinuates a sexual act.

I'm no drug expert by no means, but molly isn't even a date rape drug (with amnesia effects). I don't understand why Ross said it like he secretly dropped in GHB or something. Not sure why Ross phrased it like that in his lyrics, being that he 'slipped' the girl a molly though. Here's the song Rocko Ft Rick Ross & Future "UOENO"

Rick Ross William might want to start preparing for his identity theft lawsuit from the real "Freeway Rick Ross!

QuoteRapper Rick Ross is being sued by the drug trafficker Rick Ross for allegedly stealing his name to forge a career â€" and top music industry execs are being handed subpoenas for the trial. Rapper Rick, whose real name is William Roberts, is said to have adopted his stage name from the former c0caine kingpin, infamous for running a drug empire in LA in the 1980s. Drug dealer Ross, who went to jail in 1996 and got out in 2009, says his name has been “exploited and misused since he went to prison and . . . [the rapper] made millions off Ross’ name.” The trial is set for LA in August, and ex-Warner honcho L yor Cohen, current CEO Stephen Cooper and Warner director Edgar Bronfman Jr. are expected to testify.

I take it that you don't like rap.......

Well to rap's defense, it is Rick Ross. I'm not sure he's ever made a song that didn't make references to what he has, gets, or is worth.  Depending on one's view of William Roberts, his lyrics and beats, you'll either love or hate the latest hit....

i remember there used to be a lot ov people who (due to simple misinformation or getting sold the wrong thing) mistook GHB for MDMA.  probably still a few around.

regarding the song in general, it's really terribly written, especially the chorus.  rhyming lexus with lexus on an ABAB should be punishable by electric shock.

Rap is like any other genre. There's good rap, and there's crap rap. And RR is def crap. Those lyrics are pure repetitive garbage that has about zero thought put into them. But most mainstream music is pretty much the same these days IMO & its like everything else. Usually the worst is what you hear about.

One of my favorite stations on Sirius XM is Backspin, because it takes me back to a time when rap wasn't poop like it is now. You can still find decent new stuff, but its not mainstream & you have to really look for it.

You're probably right - I don't care for rap so I'm not going to seek out the various types of rap. So I only know what I hear, which would be the most popular stuff.

I'm at work right now so I dare not play the video that Lake linked too. Just look at the youtube screenshot:

Not exactly lyrical genius :)  Hey - at least it rhymes!

Jay already had some decent rhymes there, there was really no need to throw 'nigga' on the end ov every line.

Those rhymes are actually from Rick Ross...its a street record and most dudes in the streets speak that way. There really isnt a need, but I guess to some ears it sound cool. I do like the beat on that song. I mean it doesnt make me want to rape a catholic nun like hard rock music does, but its a hard beat for hip hop standards.

No.  They can be Buddhist as well

You shouldn't tell Cooly that, he'll probably throw in some GWAR and go after the Buddhist nuns....
