Westsiders: Krispy Kreme returning to Cassat Ave. site
09/27/2012
by Karen Brune Mathis, Managing Editor
Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corp. intends to rebuild at its 810 Cassat Ave. location, which the North Carolina-based chain closed in 2005 to the dismay of many Westside customers after 35 years in business.
Development site plans filed with the City show a 2,300-square-foot Krispy Kreme with a drive-thru lane.
“The proposed site will include the demolition of the existing building and parking spaces and construction of a new Krispy Kreme building and (a) new drive-thru lane,†according to the site plans.
Krispy Kreme, a 75-year-old company, has two other stores in Jacksonville, at 12973 Atlantic Blvd. and 11117 San Jose Blvd., which is being remodeled.
Another City document shows that the existing Cassat Avenue site that will be demolished is a 4,508-square-foot building. It’s at Cassat and College Street, near Interstate 10.
“The existing parcel is an existing abandoned Krispy Kreme building and associated parking,†according to the plans.
One fan of the location started an online petition asking for signatures from supporters who want to “Open the Krispy Kreme on Cassatt Ave Again!!â€
Krispy Kreme is based in Winston-Salem, N.C., and its signature is the Orignal Glazed â€" and that’s a registered trademark â€" doughnut.
Established in 1937, Krispy Kreme has about 711 locations around the world as well as a presence in grocery, convenience and mass merchandise stores. Its website is KrispyKreme.com.
The website shows a Charlotte, N.C., store opened Monday and three more â€" in Rock Hill and Anderson, S.C., and in Knoxville, Tenn. â€" will open next.
A Florida Times-Union report on Dec. 14, 2005, said Krispy Kreme closed two of its four area stores â€" the Cassat Avenue location and one in Orange Park. The Orange Park location closed after 10 years, the newspaper reported.
Property records show the Cassat Avenue building was constructed in 1970. Krispy Kreme owns the property, which is a little less than half an acre.
There’s no opening date yet, but patrons, prepare. The Charlotte opening offered a free dozen of the glazed doughnuts every week for a year to the first customer in line. The second through 99th customers received a free dozen each month for a year.
There also were T-shirts for the first 100 customers.
Thank God KK should have never left! 8)
Awesome! Dunkin' Donuts across the street, will have some competition again. :)

The building is nice but it's just a building a lot like the gas station in Avondale. :)
I was actually more concerned with the restoration of the sign, moreso than the building, LOL.
I also felt the same about the sign. I want to see it brought back to life.

Nooooooo! Too close! Every time I would try to go to Lowes or Home Depot, my car would turn down Cassett to KK. I could never stop it and now it's going to start up again.

KK owns the land Thank God and will not have to really worry about saving a building that has been sitting since 2005 when it closed. Have you be out to the building it looks OK from the outside but its trashed and has a lot of problems. Besides the inside was very small I remember the lines outside the door on most mornings now if KK wants to rebuild the old style into the new building I'm OK with that. But let KK do what it wants Jesus Christ!
Just wrote to KK myself .. Save the Cassat Ave Building.. Enough with demolishing

I asked them to restore the vintage sign, and I thought it would be KK Kool to restore the vintage building. But nevertheless, I was glad they were coming back to that location.

Think about it: A new building and old sign will really look cool together, draw attention to the place, AND increase sales. Its a win-win :)

The sad thing about this whole thing is this site back in 2005 shouldn't have closed. I remember the older ladies that had worked at the Cassat Ave store. And a lot had worked there for years and were close to retirement what happen too them? Besides KK still has owned the land and has paid $56,000 dollars over the years in Prop Taxes to keep the land that fact said by mtraininjax! Did KK make a pack with DD the sameway 7/11 made with Gate the world may never know.
^Those older ladies were put out with the trash, like anyone else who's ever been downsized.

Very true but it really sucked but thats life. :'(
Yep.. that is life. Hey.. its cheaper to restore and add on than demo, pay an impact fee just to place a new building there. so I hope the sign AND the building are restored ( and added on to if necessary) .
I think opinions of both sides of the issue are being weighed by Krispy Kreme.
We need to stop replacing every friggin building on the planet simply because it is old or the inside is not up to par... That what remodeling is for. Every demolition fills more landfill space. So it is more than simply saving the building.... which there is NO GOOD REASON to destroy in this case.

Do you remember back when this KK was open it was small inside and parking was a joke because KK had so many of their own trucks on the left side of the building. So KK wants to add a drive Thur which seems for them to do this the design would be like the one off of San Jose Blvd? But I'm guessing and lets not stop them from not coming back to the Westside a lot of Fat and happy people what fresh hot donuts once more. I was up in Amelia Island a couple of weeks ago and I stopped at the Harris Teeter and picked up what I thought were fresh KK's in a box after paying and getting back in my car. I began to eat them as I drove back on A1A let me tell you these donuts sucked but ate three any way and throw the rest away. I WANT MY FLESH HOT DONUTS TO RETURN TO THE WESTSIDE SO IF KK WANTS THE OLD BUILDING GONE SO BE IT! Thank You and my God bless you :)
::)
You win. I am tired of debating this.
God bless you too .

We both win when KK returns new or old building remodeled see I can bend a little. I JUST WANT MY HOT DONUTS BACK. I'm sleepy and since NotNow is back on site its time for bed. Goodnight to all the good people of Jacksonville and the bad people God has a place for you one day unless you change. Amen :)
I will agree on the hot donuts.
Because that location was at one time a distribution (?) point for KK.. I can see where you think it might not be feasible to save the building.
Not sure why NotNow's presence on the site is a deterrent but whatever. I know there are some here who don't like me either. Not that I lose any sleep over it :) .
I happen to think Not Now is a good person.
IILY, Someone gave me a tip about KK donuts that I have not tried yet. He said that 15 seconds in the microwave will make them taste just like they came from the fryer. I'm afraid to try it.
It's definitely better than cold. But nothing is better than hot out of the fryer.

It's pretty damn close to the real deal....obviously, who wouldn't prefer a fresh from the fryer one, BUT, the microwaved one is daaaaaamn good. I'd say it's a 7-9/10 when comparing it to the 10/10 fried one.

True. On the other hand, day old KKs that were put in the refrigerator overnight have unique endearing qualities all their own. :)
HURRY UP & BUILD THE PLACE, KK! WE'RE GETTING IMPATIENT.
IILY said the old building was tiny inside...from the first post I understand the new building will be just over HALF the size of the old one.. ???
Nobody mentioned the old red neon donut sign. The new "Hot Now" sign that the company installs just isn't the same..probably LED.
I always wondered who got the Red Donut when they closed.

I believe when the Cassat Ave KK was built back in the 1970's it was more of a wholesale factory store / retail store without drive thru. So my guess would be that the new KK to be built on Cassat Ave is going to be like what San Jose has with a drive thru. http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00028416/00050/7x?vo=11

Nearly seven years to the day it closed, a Westside Krispy Kreme restaurant is set to be reduced to rubble.
Permits issued Friday show that the shuttered restaurant at 810 Cassat Ave. â€" which had served those delicious glazed rings for 35 years â€" will be razed to make way for a new, modern Krispy Kreme restaurant.
That was the plan in September 2005, when the city first issued demolition permits for the project. Instead, the restaurant closed that December, its windows boarded up, its Krispy Kreme name removed from signs and its property ringed with a chain link fence.
But in September of this year, the project gained new life when the 75-year-old, Winston-Salem, N.C.-based company re-submitted development site plans with the city.
As of Monday morning, no demolition had begun at the site.

Thanks for the update jtwestside I'm so looking forward to getting these donuts Hot/Now in the near future. :)
I kind of hate to see the old place go, but I sure as hell hope the sign will NOT be torn down & replaced. Back in the day you could see that old neon all the way up & down Cassat - and even on Interstate 10.
Do we have a date for the demolition? I would love to get pictures before an old friend is laid to rest. Wish we could get pics. on the inside before it comes down.
At least like the Phoenix, it will rise from the ashes and be ours again.

The reasons for the original closing seemed obvious with what appeared to be some decline & all/most of the prime auto dealerships shifting to Blanding; is there some upswing going on? It just seems odd that there was a newer location that came & went in Orange Park after the Cassat closure...
There's a lot of traffic. The Lowe's is just around the corner and a Walgreens on the corner of Cassatt and, is that Lenox?, The old mall seems to be picking up business, other than the Bubba Burger Grill closing.
I think word of mouth is in its favor. I hear a lot of positive talk about it coming back.
did you see my link to the pictures from today? Not great, but you definitely can see some activity having been done. :)
If anyone is interested in seeing the pics from Monday, 1-14-13 they can be seen on FaceBook/Photos by Big Cheese. Not good, but you can see what it looked like.
Friday 1-18-13 Th entire south side is down. Since I still can't figure out how to link pics. to MJ these from today can b seen on FaceBook/PHOTOS BY BIG CHEESE
BIG CHEESE, you can link pics by placing 'img' and '/img' around the URL of the photo. (But use [ ] instead of ' '. For some reason, entering the tags by themselves turns up blank.)
And here it is in action:
Thanks for posting that one for me, FWT. I sent you a pm. lol
I just sent this to BIG CHEESE, but should anyone else reading this thread not know how to post images, look at this screenshot:
Place your image link (the URL) between those tags with no spaces.
^ What if there is no URL link, i.e., you're posting your own picture?
Your picture's gonna need to be hosted somewhereâ€"Facebook, Photobucket (http://beta.photobucket.com/), etc.â€"unless this board lets you attach your own images. Which, as far as I'm aware, it does not. I could be wrong.
KK is almost gone as of 2 p.m. Took pics. and we are going back to see what is left. Fun With Teeth-sorry still can't upload...even with help. ): The new ones can be seen at the same place as the old ones. If you want to post any more for me, it's okay. If not, okay with that, too.
I was informed today that there is an opening time estimate of 120 days.
So they replaced a solid brick building that was perfectly serviceable and would have lasted 100 more years with a prefab foam box that will be fully operational in 120 days, which backing out time for equipment installation, hiring and training, etc., means probably 60 or less days for construction? Idiots.
I, too would have much preferred re-habbing the old building. It was not my choice. I am happy to see that Krispy Kreme is coming back to its old location. Many people have missed it and the fact the closest places to get KK are across the river is not an easy hop, skip and jump away.
A vacant spot on Cassat will have new life and jobs will be filled. That is the positive.

*shakes head... Chris.. Couldn't agree with you more. Remember that we live in the demolition capital of the South. ;)
The reason that I began taking pictures of it was when I read about the return and planned demo I began while it was still boarded up..For my own personal benefit I wanted to have a history of progress in action.
I deeply regret that we cannot save everything.

I really enjoyed following your daily photo updates. I think if there wasn't a modern Dunkin' Donuts with a drive-thru literally feet away they would have put more consideration into restoring the old building.
You man there is actually people looking at them other than my family and friends? I really didn't expect that.
There will be more tomorrow They don't work on the weekends I try to get over there just before 4 when he knocks off. That way I have the days destruction documented.
Thanks for your interest.

I guess that some would rather see an old unadorned dilapidated building that's not in use (with more than likely no chance in hell of ever being repaired anyway) than a brand new modern Krispy Kreme building along with a historical sign that's actually worth keeping. Everything can't be treated like a downtown historical renovation project, that's like the old 'chicken salad' argument...
Please tell me they at least kept the old sign...
They are keeping the sign. (: It will have to be fixed, though, since part of it has been broken out for a long time.
If you have FaceBook you can see photos posted on PHOTOS BY BIG CHEESE. Scroll around for the complete postings.

Tuesday I took more pics, of course! There is only part of one wall standing. A lot of the debris has been hauled away. And it looked like some of the asphalt had been removed. (I wasn't able to get inside the fence this time.)
Did talk to someone who seemed to be overseeing the project. He said that in 2 wks everything should be cleared out and the new construction will begin.
I do miss the old building but this promises to be be bigger and better.
I'll continue to watch the progress.
2-8-13:
Today I took pictures of progress! The lot had been staked for the foundation. There was rebar and PVC pipe. It's exciting to see the hint of what is soon to come!

There was nothing wrong with the prior building, if they want to waste money that's certainly their business. I often wonder when I read these responses you post, have you traveled anywhere? The world doesn't work like you think it does, despite your protests this place is really quite backwards.
^^^Boy, that old ass post that I wrote really irked you huh. Do I travel anywhere? Yes. Just last year in 2012 I put a crapload of miles on my car. I REALLY love to visit theme parks for the great coasters and last year I went to...
Holiday World and Indiana Beach in Indiana
Waterville in Gulf Shores, AL
Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio, TX
Six Flags over Georgia in Austell, GA
Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knott's Berry Farm in Cali
Mt Olympus in Wisconsin
Valleyfair! and the Mall of America's Nickelodeon Universe in Minn
Carowinds in Charlotte
Sea World Orlando
Not too mention the tons of other parks that I been to before 2012. I also served in the Army during peace time in KY, COLO, and TX but I still have yet to ever visit out of the USA yet, so if you wanna rag on me about not going anywhere outta the US, then you got me there.
Bottomline that building was an eyesore, and I'm glad that they tore in down. The only halfway 'meh' pseudo-nostalgic thing about it was the green roof. They did the right thing by keeping the sign, and demoing that outdated eyesore of a building. Talking about wondering why do someone read a post, I rather read something that's logical, than typically and unfairly 'Negative Nelly' all the time like many of your posts are. Stay negative my friend.
Geez, people, Can't we all just get along??
We are talking about a building I am a great believer in saving historic buildings I honestly don't believe the old KK qualified other than as a piece of nostalgia I, too, have nostalgic memories. I will miss the old KK.
On the other hand I see it as a positive. A new KK is coming to it's old location. All of us who have missed our favorite brand of doughnuts are going to be able to get them again on our side of town. (:
Economy will have another positive for the community and jobs will be open.
I think the sacrifice of the old building is far outweighed by the good that comes with the new.
And, the relatively blighted area is showing signs of a new upswing. Lowe's, Walgreens, Dunkin Donuts (ugh), are a promising start to an improvement in that area.
^^^You're preaching to the choir. I don't get the whining and complaining about this situation, IMO it's a win win.
^^ ::)
^^^Ah, the old subtle 'rolls eyes' face yet again, we agree to disagree Timkin and that's fine. Atleast you went classy with your disagreeing of my statements instead of waiting a month with pent up frustration to chew me out like Chris did. LOL.
I feel like a referee. I will continue updating the progress and posting on FaceBook. In the interim I see no point in arguing about something that is beyond too late to do anything to change. I will eat my KK's and enjoy them no matter what building they are coming out of.
I appy to have them in their original location.
cant we all just be happy they saved the sign.
I am. (:

It didn't irk me, it just struck me that your views belie a lack of experience with any real urban fabric.

Strawman.
I never chewed you out, I just questioned whether you knew what you're talking about. It struck me as clear that you can't possibly have been to London or Berlin and then come back still thinking that prefab foam-clad boxes with a 20 year lifespan, that you have to take a car to get to, are what make great cities great. In the absence of any firsthand experience, it seems you've convinced yourself that what you have is just fine. Except, it isn't. You just don't have a baseline to compare it to, apparently other than the world tour of roller coasters, which sounds fun, but not real informative in this discussion.
I don't mean this as an insult, but seriously, travel. See how things work in places where they do work, and then come back, you'll have a fresh set of eyes. What happens here isn't fine, you just won't know that until you have something to compare it to firsthand.
^^^ First of all that stupid phrase 'strawman' that some MJers have been using recently is dead to me, so please quit using it. All it does is start flamewars, and doesn't have a basis; It's really a silly sophomoric phrase, so stop while you're ahead. Yep, you're right Chris, I don't know crap about urban fabric expect being born in NYC, and spending years in freaking urban sprawled out Brooklyn, which is one of the most architectural significant boroughs in the NYC. So just because I didn't like an (IMO) ugly building that was on Cassat, I don't know crap about urban fabric, so that's the way the world works now; It's really 'backwards' when a person LITERALLY complains about positive progress with the whole Krispy Kreme situation. Hey Chris, while I'm at it, when I go through cities downtowns' on travel (Uptown Charlotte, ATL, etc) and stop for a bite, I can't look, because inspiring urban fabric hurts my eyes, so I blindfold my fucking self; Oh, I can't stand the sight of it!!! ::)
Way to go all damn elitist on me, "Oh, I haven't been to Berlin, London etc". Wow, that's what people like yourself do, exploit a situation when someone is being honest. Hell, most of the architecture in the major Northeastern cities happens to be English anyway. I hope that you know this is the internet age, and info can be looked up, hell or even read in a book, so I'm not totally 100% clueless about well known international cities like London. Stay condescending my friend.

Im sure you learned alot about the world at Six Flags over Georgia, but that doesnt take away any of the validity of Chris's point.
And please watch the language. Its abominable.
You and Chris are so predictable. Just because I mentioned some examples of travelling LAST YEAR, I supposedly don't know anything other than coasters. Even with me have being CONUS in the military, and just visiting family for gawdwsakes (everything other than the coaster travel which yall love to talk about so much) I been to plenty of places throughout. I do other things to besides staying at a park on a coaster trip, geez. The problem with yalls 'point' is that it doesn't have any 'validity' not unless me not liking an old torn down building equals to being a countryside peasant; That's what this 'conversation' is about right yall? I'm not one of these 'You don't know me' type of people, and I know that all of us talk online aplenty, but I like the way some of you act as if you've personally known me for years with the many "I haven't been anywhere" statements.

Great posting and you are right about the people you have talked about!
^^^Thanks IILY for having my back on that one, hardly no one does around here.
All this hostility! Holy Crap! lol
When they reopen, could we all get together and simply enjoy eating the doughnuts?????
^^^Hey, I'm with ya man. No one wants this silliness to end more than me, unfortunately some people can't let things go, like what was on Cassat Ave. This thread was dormant for a minute, but then Mr go go Gator, and his tag team buddy had to double team me for whatever reason.
It is a little weird. The whole thing.

I-10... I try to get along with everyone and see their points of view. That includes yours.
Living in a city where so many examples of great architecture have been razed to make way for something like a blighted lot, or a foam and 2x4 modern wonder, that may make it 3 decades (if maintained) , I just happen to be sick of seeing everything razed because it is old. The building that was there was far better in construction quality, than what will replace it.
Big Cheese is correct. In this case it is too late. No point in continuing to debate on a building that is no longer. Hey at least the sign was valued enough to save . For now. Until someone decides it is time for it to be replaced.
Nothing lasts forever .
And to an extent, I agree with your view, except that I happen to think the building that was razed was EASILY savable and should have been saved. I know we can't save them all. My frustration lies in the fact that only a fraction has been spared from demolition...and some of that which remains is endangered. While the Krispy Kreme location had no significant architectural features, IT VERY DEFINITELY WAS a landmark.
God forbid the company spend a fraction of cost of new-build and save the old place. Knock it down. Fill our landfills with the debris. Who cares ??
::) hence the rolling eyes.
Guess it boils down to individual views. I love old places and think we should value them. Unfortunately , economics usually come into play, and there is also the fact that many do not share the view that they should be saved.
KK news update:...If everyone is finished squabbling over a moot point.
Today they laid a little bit of foundation. I will post a few photos on PHOTOS BY BIG CHEESE if anybody cares to see them.
^ no squabble here, Big Cheese. I ll check the pics out :P
How come no one chronicled the razing & resurrection of the Waffle House on 17? That was a 40+ year institution - right?
blizz01 I sent you a personal message in answer to your query. Did you get it? I think I cleared up any of your problem with my posts on KK.
Update: Today I was taking pictures again. Vapor barrier is down. They are planning on laying the foundation Thursday
OPENING DATE: Aiming for MEMORIAL DAY weekend
PHOTOS BY BIG CHEESE on FaceBook
Krispy Kreme on Cassat Avenue should be opening around the 27th or 28th of this month. There are tons of people anxiously awaiting this event. I continue to update the progress on Facebook at PHOTOS BY BIG CHEESE. Even the out of town KK management are following me. lol. As of yesterday they needed to finish the parking area on the north end of the building, equipment is ready to use on the inside and the finishing touches are being attended to. Anyone from the westside ready for some KK doughnuts?
Hell Yeah I cannot wait!!!!!!!!!!!!! :'(

I love that this is your first post. I have a beautiful story in my mind that (like me) you followed the boards for years before you decided to partake. Then, you saw this story and just couldn't hold back. You signed up for an account to express your enthusiasm for fried bread covered in sugar. Enjoy the grand opening!
lol not my first post on this. due to complications caused by my computer melt down, I had to change my MJ log in name. was formally Big Cheese. This afternoon I was by there again. Got a pic. of the new banner which reads: "opening in 8 days."
More exciting for me is my friendly KK management lady was there and gave me the promised invitation for the private party on Saturday. My friends and family made jokes about me being the KK stalker. Eat your heart out to all of them....I will be enjoying my KK doughnuts come Saturday....hot-to-go!!
meant to add that when I mentioned my computer crash our wonderful Timkin fixed for me. for those who don't know him, he is one heckofa friend to have! Thanks Timkin for being the person you are! :)
Theeere Baaaacck! Opened at 6 a.m. :)
They're
The grammar police love threads about doughnuts!
Don't you mean donuts? ;D
lol The sign out front says doughnuts. I think the OTHER place spells theirs donut. I will tell you that Wednesday night, thinking the furor would have died down, I drove over. Got in the drive-thru line which was formed on College St. That, was at 11:16 p.m. 31 minutes later I made it as far as the edge of the parking lot. 12:04 I received my box. Traffic was lined up down College all the way to Lenox. I am still taking photos. Tonight I got my first pics. of the iconic sign all lit up. ;D
There's gonna be another Westside KK in the 103rd strip plaza between Jammes and Blanding nearby Wendy's.
Wendy's, Sonic, Popeye's and now Krispy Kreme in the same parking lot. Reminds me of the Fast-Food Boulevard on The Simpsons.
Or Merrill Road here in Arlington. They just opened the Krispy Kreme here and I think there's been a line ever since.
I seen the one being built on 103erd as well and almost crashed from just looking at the coming soon sign. Cant imagine what I'll do when the hot sign comes on LMAO But whats really up with Krispy Kreme. At one point they open up a bunch of stores, then a few years back start shutting them down, and now they are opening up stores again? What gives?
