To stay in line with what I did last season, I'll make a thread for each game so everyone can post their thoughts, reactions, etc. Here are my thoughts about sundays game:
Winning is important. I want us to gain a lead and keep it. Our past coaching staff stressed "keeping the game close", thankfully that's not the Mularkey or Khan way. I want them to play aggressive, hard nose football. Even if we lose, I want to see them play their asses off regardless. I wanna see them play fast. The old Jaguars offense was very slow under Del Rio.I want to see what I saw in the preseason.. Even if you have a bad drive or two, shake that shit off and pick things back up. Every team is going to have bad drives throughout the game, but how we react to them will make us a better team. Lastly, were playing in a dome environment. The played well in New Orleans, so I dont expect the dome being an issue. They are also used to playing in the nasty heat of florida. After the training camp Mularkey put them through, they should be full of energy and more then ready to play inside a dome.
All I hope for is a Jags win...
Looking for much improvement this year. I'm worried about our depth on the O line though. Whimper continues to disappoint me.

I agree. Whimper is the pits. I hope everyone stays healthy own gabberts gonna get sacked. I have no idea why we kept them.
A sign from the Gods ;D

^^^ Beautiful pic! I can't even go to sleep, I'm like a kid during Christmas morning. I already got in my lil' hors d'oeuvre fix in with watching some college football, but now it's time for the main course the NFL, specifically my Jaguars! Go Jags, sink the Vikequeens!

Huh? We practiced losing last year to the tune of 11 of them anchors! We know how to lose, but do we know how to win the games on the road we are not supposed to win? Minnesota will be a huge step toward a new era.
A loss would be more of the same.....So let's win baby!

Who says we are not "supposed" to win this game? In my mind we won this game before the season even started. LOL!
The offense is or should be at full strength, the defense I will give a slight pass on this game no matter the outcome since so many players or injured or coming off injuries. I would like to see the offense play well this game.
Defense?? Where oh where oh where!!!! But give BG credit he did a good job, this game should have never gone to OT. What a shame.
Now THAT was an exciting game!!! There is hope. Brad Meester dropped that ball on the ground like it was a turd. I think he needs to retire. That turn over changed everything. But Man they played to the minute. I love it. but we had 7 dropped passes. That has to stop. But Im still happy!!

Our secondary is in bad shape. Fuck an injury, Derek Cox needs to be put in the game. Middleton and Rutland is not cutting it. Even with a lost, facebook was lite up. People that stay in Jacksonville, and people that used to stay in JAcksonville. Several people posted saying they are going to by tickets. It was good for them to hang in their to the end.. Oh yeah, Cecil Shorts has redeemed his self.
what a disappointment. i cant belive we allowed them to score a field goal with 14 seconds left in the game.
Good game. Nothing to be mad/sad about. Too many signs pointing up....Gabbert is great, MJD is fine, Blackmun is going to be a star, Lewis is back in business. Yeah, O line and D need work, but it'll come....last year, name any loss, and it was like we were getting embarassed/slapped around. Not today. We were a football team to watch, and a good one at that!
THAT BEING SAID, why did it take a whole game (last 20 seconds) to let Gabbert throw those 30-40 yarders? He had a gem early on that was broken up...I'm just wondering why he only threw the long ball 2 or 3 times...seems we were chunk and dunking the whole time...

I agree. No need to cry over spilled milk. This is the NFL. You are not gonna win them all. Heck look at how many eggs the ravens laid last year to bad teams, but still made it the playoffs. Im not upset at all. The last minute field goal had nothing to do with anything really. Its not like the defense had a very much to work with. It was an extremely short field and they only need one good pass to get in field goal position. The turnover that Meester caused is what gave the game away. We cant make mistakes like that.
As far as the passing games, gabbert is taking what the defense is giving him. If he has to a chunk and dunk, then so be it. Theres no need to force a ball downfield when there is nothing there. No need to waste downs trying to the chuck the ball down the field. That is an area they know we need work on. Right now the short and intermidedate stuff is what were going to see why the offense develops.

Not just the Meester turnover, but the overthrow to Blackmun in the first quarter...
Also, I agree re: Gabbert is going to take what the defense is giving him. BUT, again, in the first quarter and in that last throw to Shorts, Gabbert was showing that he could force it all day long...just think he was unnecessarily chunking when he should have thrown the long ball, for better or worse, at least once a quarter. His accuracy is one of his best attributes, so why not play to it more?

Yes he overthrew Blackmon, but thats nothing compared to a turn over. We still got points out of that drive. When we turned the ball over, we gave the viking 7 points. As far as going deep, I dont think they trust our receivers yet, and I dont either. They are much better than last years crew, but none of them can seem to get enough seperation. Gabbert has good accuracy because he doesnt make risky plays. I think we will more deep passes as the season goes on. We have to remember this offense were complete clowns last year. They still have a LONG way to go before they are dropping bombs all over the field, know what I mean? I could have taken everything that happen in that game, but that turnover changed the game all the way around.
^ agree.
Anyways, we played like a team with a winning record. We didn't embarrass ourselves. Tons of players are looking up (Lewis, Blackmun, Robinson, MJD, Gabbert). Considering the injuries on D and the weird O line shit, great game. Can't wait until next week.

Shockinlygly, looking online and even facebook. People in Jacksonville were actually thrilled about the game and I seen several post made people saying they are going to get some tickets this week. I was floored when Gabbert made that pass to shorts. But I calmed down because I had a feeling some ookie-doke type shit was getting ready to happen. LOL I think fans just want exciting football. And winning of course. But its seems to be positive energy surrounding the game from the people of Jacksonville. However, the team is taking it extremely hard, especially the defense. Atleast we dont have a coaching staff that is going to be lack and make up excuses like del rio. They'll rebound.
But when u read the TU commentator...it's mostly negative about the team..

How low are the expectations now that "We didn't embarrass ourselves" is a positive comment. Gabbert looked okay. Defense looked pretty bad at times. Everyone has injuries and if ours are crippling in the 1st week wait until week 12. Hope they improve. Early in the season everything can change.

Its not about having "low expectation" its about being realstic. Compared to the comedy show they put on last year, they played some exciting football. If you expected them to come in and play like an elite team, then you need to wake up. Del Rio left this team in a complete mess. Murlkey and the coaching staff have gone over and beyond to work with what they have and make things better. Sure we can go and nick pick every little thing that didnt go right. Im sure some of the best team have things they can nick pick about as well. But Im not going to downplay the progress they have made. And Gabbert had a QB rating of 96.1, that is far from okay. Defense looked great, secondary just broke down in the second half. Dont know you to well, but I refuseto let anyone come in downing the team when they are doing better. They are busting their ass. You can keep all that to yourself.
Heart breaking loss...but a lot of positives. MJD looked great with just a week of work. Gabbert is starting to look like a first round pick. We'll work on our weaknesses and get the division win next week.
I for one am very impressed, as far as I'm concerned this was actually a win. Some of our crew are showing themselves to be top notch contenders and as the clock ticks down, they are looking even better.
Good job guys, a tough loss, but some spectacular ray's of light.
Get rid of Whimper and Russell Allen ASAP!!!! Those two shouldn't be in a NFL uniform!!!, Offense played well enough to win, some questionable play calling at the end especially the squib kick by Scobee. Defense was horrid. See ya next week in the bank!!

Why the Jaguars send out the secondary unit of the Defense during the 2nd half? I must have missed something? Did the key players in the primary unit of the Defense got injured?

Josh the secondary are the pass defense players that are in the backfield (Corner Backs, etc etc) They were all starters, expect for one or two. Our starting CB is still injuried.

This team is still several drafts away( thats if they hit) from being a true contender. All team have injuries, but what I saw was alot of what we saw last year just slightly better. Its going to be another long year..

Disagree.
Our offense looks very much improved. Our defense is the essentially the same that is returning from last year. I'm not going to agree that we're still 'several' drafts away. We can win now, with who we have, but we won't do it unless all 3 phases are clicking together.
Offense, Defense & Special Teams.
It's hard to believe, but our D & Special teams gave that game away. And to me at least, that's a good thing - it's doesn't need that much fixing as much as it needs a kick in the ass. Middleton is a liability. Yobouty could be getting a call soon. I haven't paid attention to Ross, but seems as though he's not playing up to par. Cox is in a contract year, as is Mathis - they better get their asses on the field so they can make that next pay check.
Horrible call to end the game - I don't even think that Gabbert looked at another reciever, 5 steps and out came the ball. It's the little plays that cost us, not a lack of talent, but a lack of discipline.

Not really. If Gabbert is a franchise QB, they are already a contender. Is there one bottom feeder in this league that has a franchise QB? So far this year, through camp, preseason, week one, he looks like that guy. Throw in Blackmon, Monroe, Knighton, Branch, Poz. This team has cornerstones at alot of key positions.

I agree cooperfield. I was amazed at how we spreaded the ball around. I dont think weve ever done that honestly. If Im not mistaken, Gabbert threw to like 6 or 7 different people: Blackmon, Lewis, Owens, Robinson, Shorts, Jones and MJD. If you look at a team like the packers, thats why they do. They can spread the ball around. We have have 90% of our building blocks in place. Our next draft is going to set this team off.

I dont know buddy. Youbooty wasnt all that hot either. If you remember, he was playing at the end of last season when when our secondary was getting torched. Mathis seems to be getting up to speed so hopefully they put him back at CB soon. But I agree about the players. Ive said for years we had good players that werent being utilized correctly. All JDR wanted to do is ride MJD and Fred Taylor and run the ball. They are a young team and have a alot of work to do, and that was evident on Sunday. But as you stated, just minor tweets and good kick in the rear end and they will be on track. I cant remember a time in the past few years we were in a situation like we were on Sunday. I dont think they were ready to handle that just yet. The defense put us in a bad spot. Luckily, they will be playing with a chip on their shoulder this Sunday

Love me some in-depth statistics.
We've (I've) been busting on Middleton, DD08 said it was Ross - Guess what? It was Ross & Landry:
Ross: TA-7, Cmp-6, Yds-79, QBRA-113.7
Landry: TA-4, Cmp-4, Yds-69, QBRA-118.8
Middleton: TA-1, Cmp-0
Poz wasn't really good in coverage either, giving up 3 Receptions for 35 yards
And the 2 times they targeted Rutland, he gave up 48 yards on 2 catches.
Our secondary needs Cox and Mathis healthy. Our line needs to rush the QB better.

Thats shocking. Landry is usually in place. Hes on of the best one's. But Ive noticed with defense its a trickle down effect. If you have a few players playing out of place, or missing tackles, etc. Tuckers defense requires you play your position and play it fast. Everybody has been all out of sync. They better figure it out. And of course with Cox, SMith and sessions out, its really showing.
Well we could be the Browns.. Offense #32, Defense #31. Not a start anyone wants. WE started as #32 last year and stayed there. Its hard to crawl out from under that. I feel for them.
Ok we will see, this team is not very good. I'll be happy to eat my words. The Vikings are just as bad as the Jags and we couldn't beat them. 20 sec left and you still lose, not the sign of a good team. Too many injuries and not enough depth yet again. Many of you may be going off the two early preseason wins, but the Ravens game should have brought you back to earth. This will be another painful year.
DD stop with the we could be foolishness!!

Alot can change from year to year in the NFL. We don't really know what the Vikings are.

I know right, they were down right terriable. Seriously heres the deal Keith none of us knows whats going to happen this season, Including yourself! The nfl is unpredictiable and ever changing. Teams rise from the very bottom to the very top every single season. Also, you are basing your judgements off one game. Yes our defesne screwed up at the end. SO What!!! Elite teams lay eggs all the time. The Ravens laid an egg in Jacksonville and Seattle last season, but still made to the AFC chamionships. One game does not determine an entire season for any team. But if you would like to keep spewing your negative predictions as you do ever year, be my guest.

Not being negative DD just because I dont agree with other people's assements. I will say this BG, Blackmon, and Monroe held his own vs Jared Allen. Those are certainly some positives to take away from this game. Jags really needed to win this game.

No doubt. But I think the real test will be how they react to the lost. I would love for them to play with a chip on their shoulder. Given the injury issues on the offense sunday, they still made it through and that shows me they want to win. The defense came up short and put us in a terrible situation. This is a young team that is coming off a horrific year for the franchise and I don't think they were ready for that type of pressure.
I agree with Jaguars.com assessment of the season. Before it started , the Oman said that the offense would have hiccups and misfires at first, but as the season progresses things will start to really come together. That's the only thing we can hope/wish/expect at this point. If you look at murlakey's first year in buffalo (which I posted their wins in the other thread), they start off slow. They won couple by a few points, and lost quite a few. Then all of a sudden, it happened. Their last 5-6 wins, they were completeing blowing out the other teams opponent. They were only 9-7, but they games they won, the kicked serious ass. If you look at it, the only weapon they had was lee Evans and I believe they had some QB issues back then also. If they can do that, I know we can do 10 times better. Compared to that team, we are loaded on both sides of the ball. I was impressed by our ability to spread the ball around. I don't recall us doing that much under del Rio. I also love the different looks that this offense gives. Honestly it confuses me watching them because its so much going on. Seems like we lost a little momentum once we started all the shifting on the O-line started because of the injuiries. But I see alot of good things happening.
I'm finally off my football doldrums from that heartbreaking loss. We got of shake it off, and find a way to beat Houston. I was talking to my friend, something that hardly no one is talking about was that soft prevent defensive the Jags were in during Minny's game tying long field goal. Mel, why not play a regular 4-3 with some pressure, instead of that soft umbrella junk? I digress, we better win vs the Texans or playoff contention will be a tall order. Before you any of you negative Nancies go on and say 'we don't have a chance vs the Texans" remember, it's a division game where both teams know each other very well, and weird things can happen.

Mularkey stated that the defense has not been playing many difficut coverages because they were trying to find something that the back ups could play well under.. Well its not working. Were going have to go for the gusto and hope for the best.
Water under the bridge, ready to move on and beat Houston.
