You heard it here first, Edgewood Ave across from Moon River.
Today is a very, very, very good day :) :) :)

Don, it seems, is the curse breaker. His current location had a bit of the same stigma after its long term tennant moved out.
This has been about a year and a half journey (mainly a quest to find adequate kitchen space within an existing building). I'm very glad that it's finally happening.
If you're at Jacksonville Magazine's Best of Jax event Thursday at Everbank Field... welcome Don and Debbie into the neighborhood. They'll be serving up some Dos Equis-braised pork tacos. YUM!
That will be a great addition to the area. I think the curse of that location in the past was every place trying to make it fine dining.
This news just made my day. Any word on a possible time frame?
Great news for the area.
Love Taco Lu at the beach, despite the parking nightmare over there.
Mehh.
It's no burrito gallery.
Thursday is one of the busiest days of quality programming i've seen in a while
Intuition: Belgian Beer Fest Mug Club Event
MOSH: Bacardi Mixology Event
TUPAC: Ron White
The Stadium: Best of Jax Event.
I will be at Intuition and MOSH, but I wish I could do all 4.
wow that is awesome. Edgewood definitely needs another shining star over there and I think Taco Lu's would do the trick.
Taco Lu is better than BG; I love them both but you can't beat the menu at Taco Lu. Great news!

This is my EXACT sentiment. The menu looks fantastic, but
"seared tuna with sesame glazed cucumbers, avocados, chipotle crema and oaxaca cheese" comes to the table looking like somebody dumped the insides of a california roll onto your tortilla and threw some craft cheese on top. As far as quality of food goes, BG is KING.

Friendly debate here; what does BG even attempt to serve that is hard to prepare? All they have are easy to prepare items (which are delicious) but I don't think they have anything on the menu that is out of the ordinary

From Cari Sanchez-Potter, the business manager at Intuition.Quote"Belgian Beer Week culminates with our Belgian Beer Fest on Saturday the 28th! We're turning the tap room and brewery bar into a Belgian monastery. The staff will be dressed as monks and you'll be drinking by candlelight to the soothing sounds of Gregorian chants. A number of brand new Belgian ales will be on tap that day. Watch our blog and FB page for details about new brews and other happenings that day.
See you in the tap room!
Cheers,
Cari
Each restaurant does certain things very well. That said, I am glad for Murray Hill....actually I'm jealous you bastards.

This is where we differ, I suppose. I don't care if it was hard to make as long as it is delicious. Everything is fresh, well executed, and it tastes great.
In the NBA slam dunk competition they only care if it goes through the hoop. You can have the best planned, most elaborate, jaw dropping dunk in the world, but if it doesn't go through the basket, no dice. Taco Lu has missed the hoop for me each time I have been.
In other words: They try and kick a 100 yard field goal and come up 30 yards short. BG lines up at the 30 and blasts it out of the stadium.
If you need any more sports analogies, feel free to ask.

Actually I think the NBA 3 point contest would be a better analogy. You get no style points or wow factor for that. It either goes in or it doesn't. In the dunk contest, even when the dudes miss a dunk it can be spectacular to watch. :)
^ A spectacular failure.
The owners of Carmines is supposed to do a similar BG/Taco Lu concept in the old Jacksons location. I visit BG at least once a week if not more, but at least there will be different options.
I suppose a spectacular failure is better than a boring failure.
At any rate, I'd rather see occupied storefronts than vacant ones. Welcome Taco Lu.

Wait, so I'm supposed to eat the food at a slam dunk competition? Do I kick the taco before or after I take a bite?:-)
No one goes to the slam dunk competition to watch a lay-up; and I rarely go out to eat to eat the equitable version of one... trying... to... keep.... up with analogies.
I've had a pretty good experience at Taco Lu, but I can agree that the variance on the menu can lend itself to potential plating catastrophe.
You may be more a fan of the run-first style eating offense, whereas I prefer a little wild-cat, run and gun on my plate.
OK, I give up on the sports analogies. Let's just get to the part where we start naming our favorite dishes.
That location has been vacant for at least 3 years so I am not sure why it took a year and half to find it. That would have been the first place I went to if I was looking.
Have been longtime fan of BG, tried to lure them into the location now being filled by Dahlia's Pour House.
Have been to Taco Lu 1 time. It was 50/50, I loved the shrimp taco but whatever my wife had left me listless.
She liked it, however.
Welcome to the neighborhood, this is huge news for Murray Hill.
I think the workers of BG and Tacu Lu need to have a B-Ball game to settle this.
Quote

In the land of dunk competitions, the lay up scores no points.
My point with all of this is that if your menu says it's going to be a gourmet taco with more toppings than I can believe, don't give me something on par with La Nop.
Burrito Gallery promises a tasty dish that is expertly made and they deliver 100% every time.
I'll put in a plug here for Nipper's tacos, they are amazing and the menu absolutely undersells them. The pork belly taco is still the best taco I have ever had. Granted, they are going to run a couple bucks higher than other places.
I apologize, I wasn't aware that so few forumers had the capacity for abstract thought. I'll quit the analogies.
All the back-and-forth aside, a new restaurant in the strip in Murray Hill is very welcome. Especially one with a built-in base of support and a great reputation.
I'm actually glad this is going somewhere other than King Street. Are they opening in the old 1171 space??
Another thing to add. I recently hit up Perfect Rack for the first time and I really enjoyed it. They have some nice pool tables, a big bar area, friendly staff, and plenty of of diversions for an adult to enjoy. My main complaint was the smokers inside. I found that extremely strange considering they serve food, however it wasn't bad enough to keep me from going back (but not for food). I hope that Taco Lu will help this strip reach critical mass and continue to flourish.
QuoteI'm so glad to hear all this excitement, but I'm sorry to say that this is not a done deal. We have a long way to go. We are very much looking forward to being a big part of the fun in Murray Hill, with such great neighbors as Moon River Pizza, the Alibi, Edgewood Bakery, Dreamette, the Crazy Egg! Murray Hill is a great neighborhood and I hope that we can be a part of it! Stay tuned to the TacoLu Facebook page and our website. I should post a journal about how difficult/expensive it is going through this process! Keep your fingers crossed out there!

Mmm... the debates of the core - 5 Points Publix v Roosevelt Publix, Carmine's v Moon River, now TacoLu v Burrito Gallery.
I like them both for different reasons. Super stoked to get TacoLu (and Fionn's at the Landing) from the other side of the ditch.
Any updates on this project?
I don't see them coming to Murray Hill, besides the one pizza place, the area there at the tracks is pretty dead. Nothing new has happened since the pool hall came in, and 1171 left. If you had money for a location, why not move to Avondale and one of the shops? A lot more people traffic in Avondale than in Murray Hill.

Why would they need to spend the money on location when customers will come no matter what. Taco Lu at the beach isn't exactly in the most prime retail location. Spending more than 3x the cost of that building on place less than a mile away doesn't make sense. Keep the overhead low and serve amazing food.
QuoteWhy would they need to spend the money on location when they will come no matter what.
Says who?
Why do people come to that area of Murray Hill? There is only 1 real draw for food, the pizza place. If that is your crowd, sure thing, setup shop there. The problem is that the Fat Kat hall has to go away, it does nothing to add anything to that space. Clean that up, maybe more people come there, but who would ever open up retail with the hope and prayer anyone would drive there?
When MM opens up this fall, it is going to crush it in Avondale. Nothing in Murray Hill offers outdoor seating either, unless you are talking about Gina's, almost to the interstate or Edgewood Bakery, or the Egg. There is just no space on the sidewalk for it.
If the Egg were in Avondale, wow, what a crowd, with the Fox on one side and the Egg on the other. I'd like to see another diner like restaurant in Avondale, would be great at the other end, down by Pulp.
It's a good location as it's got a high density of people within blocks of the commercial strip, plus it's easily accessible from Avondale and Riverside (and the rest of the core for that matter). There's still been little penetration by that kind of the thing in the area, and the rent is cheap. It's an area just waiting to take off.
QuoteIt's an area just waiting to take off.
I heard those same comments about Brooklyn a few years back. Lavilla before then, The Shipyard too. Come to think of it, that phrase gets a lot of use.
QuoteIt's a good location as it's got a high density of people within blocks of the commercial strip,
1171 was a great location, the problem is the Fat Kat Music Hall, no one wants it there, and everything it becomes gets worse and worse. I remember the swingers nite that produced all kinds of out of town traffic. Great to bring new people to jax for swinging! Wholesome family fun, right in Murray Hill.

As a neighborhood commercial district, Edgewood is way further along than those places. Lavilla and The Shipyards are just vacant lots. Not even comparable.
QuoteNot even comparable.
Mark my words, I live less than a mile down the road from that area at the tracks and Mayflower, nothing will invest there until the Fat Kat is gone. Taco Lu is going to want a large area, so why don't they take out Fat Kat? 1171 does not offer outside seating, so that is shot. Unless they move down to Post and Edgewood, where there is more sidewalk, where exactly do you see them setting up shop in Murray Hill?
Everyone says they are coming to Murray Hill, but where, and why would they open up if there is no onstreet dining option, like they have at the beach? At least down the street at Mellow Mushroom, John is creating an outside beer garden with the gas station. There is nothing offering this in Murray Hill, except the Fat Kat.
So if they are indeed coming to Murray Hill, that would seem the logical choice, unless 1171 is the location with outside seating looking at the barber shop and eastward down Mayflower. Nice.
People will go to Murray Hill for a good product- neither Moonriver or Crazy Egg appear to have a shortage of customers. Usually there is a line out the door at Crazy Egg on a Sunday morning.
That being said the Taco Lu location at the beach was not a great spot before they opened there. There had been a ton of failed restuarants at that location that would open up and close within a year, plus there is a lack of parking and it's on a busy part of Beach that is hard to cross. None of those things have kept them from being wildly sucessful. If they open in Murray Hill I would expect a similar sucess.
Moon River seems to be doing just fine without outdoor seating.
I guess having good food helps.
I see Monty's is trying to sell or $1.8 million. Too much, in my opinion, but I think a place like TacoLu's, who needs to liquor license and the preexisting kitchen, could pull it off.

Clearly you have never been to the Taco Lu at the beach which is in a tiny building stuck between two ugly buildings, overlooking 4 lanes of traffic with almost no parking and no outdoor eating.
Moreover, I think "waiting to take off" applies to too much of Jacksonville, maybe even all of Jacksonville...maybe we should drop the phrase until we see a "waiting to take off" move into the "wow that took off" area.

Taco Lu had already discussed possibly going into Murray Hill and the 1171 location, but they said it was not a done deal yet. You must have missed that in the thread earlier.
My whole point is that I doubt they could produce enough revenue to justify the 3-4x the cost of a building only a short distance away. As a reminder Pine Street has 1171 listed at 425k.
425k?? haha
and the old new broadway in 5 points is only 225!

Nonsense. There are plenty of comparable areas that actually have taken off - generally after they've been invested in properly. I don't use the phrase lightly. In this case, the people and infrastructure are already there in the neighborhood. And people from the wider area would go over for a restaurant like Taco Lu, plus the rent's cheap.

Yeah, kind of shoots that argument down.
Is Fat Kat even open? I live on Edgewood and have never seen anyone there. Back in the day I used to see a bouncer or someone sit out by the front door- but I don't even recall seeing that in the last couple years.
On a separate note, what was the reason 1171 closed?
Let's consider for a sec why 1171 isn't there anymore. Average food at above average prices. It had nothing to do with FatKat or outdoor seating.
On a side note, does anyone have any clue what's going on at FatKat anymore? I hardly see it open, but I'm rarely looking to go in anyhow, so it's possible that I miss it.

If Murray Hill won't support Taco Lu, SPR certainly will. I hear there's huge, rather cool building (with outdoor seating) at 9th & Main for sale for $200k. : )
But seriously, if the French Pantry, Three Layers, & Sweet Petes can succeed in out-of-the-way and non-traditional spots, I seriously doubt a quality venue would have difficulty attracting to the former 1171 location.

Truer words have not been spoken. Three places where the food speaks for itself...location be damned, I don't care if I live 50 miles away, I'm crawling to French Pantry as often as possible.
The price for 1171 plus the Sushi joint seems reasonable, if you are getting a functioning commercial kitchen (maybe 2) plus working HVAC included. I think Taco Lu could definately work there. They could pick up traffic from US 17 and would be very close to the strong demographics of Riverside-Avondale, and would rival Moon River as the default "go to" place for residents of Murray Hill.
Also like them going into Yesterday's location at Dancy and Park Street (currently ofered for sale at $1.4 million).
That would feed off the continual flow of traffic on Park plus you are just 3 blocks away from TSOA. That site has great parking, and pretty good population density there for walk up customers. It also offers enough square footage (9000) to allow a sublet to subsidize the mortgage.
My estimation for inactivity at Fat-Cats is five years+...someone can correct me here.
Within the past couple years the Fat Kat location has been like five different things - Fat Kat, Edge 17 (?), an "Internet Cafe" / gambling scam place, Fat Kat again... I know I'm missing a couple.
Well, I live directly across the street from where the Tacolu's is planning on taking over and I can't wait!
As far as Fat Kats, yes it is till open, current version since around June of 2011. The club itself isn't too bad but the clientele is not what I would like to see in my neighborhood, driving around with the bass cranked up in their cars till our windows shake, drunk people urinating in various places and people yelling about whether they should go to Waffel House or Ihop and which was better(I've actually heard this argument twice in the past several months). I've heard rumor that the Farah brothers own the building Fat Kats is in but have not verified it in anyway. I know at least the Baptist Seminary/Barber Shop next to me are sick of them too as there is quite a bit of trash left behind, club flyers, empty cups and alcohol bottles etc, and they occassionally set off the alarm at the jewlery store.
At least the club is only open Friday and Saturday night, Friday it's pretty packed, not as much on Saturday, judging from the flyers that are left it seems the party goes to Plush or another club on that night.
Here's hoping Tacolu's hurries up and opens and Fat Kat closes soon!
Bill
As a follow up to my last post if someone were to turn Fat Kats into a small movie theater (probably not a good idea with Sunray so close) or a bowling alley I would definitely support them!
QuoteAlso like them going into Yesterday's location at Dancy and Park Street (currently ofered for sale at $1.4 million).
Not likely to happen, there is only outside seating on the back of the property, and with Orsay next to it, and little active retail across the street, except in the Avondale Superette, I don't see this as a great option. Sale at 1.4 plus a sizeable investment, I don't see it.
Drove down Edgewood past the Fat Kat and noticed the Sushi place had a FOR RENT SIGN in front of it as did the small retail shop, so the entire EAST SIDE of Edgewood between Plymouth and Mayflower is now empty during the day. If Moon River and the Pool Hall were such a draw, why is that side of the street still empty?

Sorry no good news here. After enjoying Sunday taco's (open at 10 am!) I inquired as to the status of Murray Hill and got a no way Jose. The building is just in too bad of shape. The word is they are moving down the street to the Old South location.

Where's the old south location?
Beach Blvd/ Inter-coastal, East of Pleasure Is. I thought it was called the Old South. Plantation? It's the big house that was just extensively renovated. Was filmed for being Haunted.
^It was called the Homestead, then the Copper Top and it was next to Adventure Landing.
