I had been sworn to secrecy since Halloween.... but now that the construction permit has been issued, I can let the cat out of the bag.
Jersey Mikes is coming to Jax and will be housed in the former Blockbuster storefront on Roosevelt Blvd.... across from the Shell station and opposite La Nop/Pet Supermarket.
Bring on some subs!!!
A bagel store is also going into the old gym across from Eclipse/Harps. Us Fairfax folks are happy. :)
Jersey Mike's is excellent! Great location too!
Sweet!
Fantastic...used to go to them in South Carolina all the time. Hate to be the poor sport, but I can't help wishing they were a little more towards the core, i.e. Riverside or Downtown area...
Any word on whose running the bagel shop?
They'll get their fair shake, but it's going to take some real wow (tough for a sub) to get me over my cravings of Larry's.

Same...I don't know how LGS does it, but I'm fighting myself not to go there everyday.
At Larry's...
It is the perfect amount of sub bread that is nicely toasted with brown edges that gives a range of flavor in the bread in conjunction to the meat, lettuce, and other toppings. Also, how fresh and good quality the meat it is from Boar's Head.
I think it is the cutting style of the lettuce makes it manageable to eat at the right portion. It delivers into your mouth more efficient and effective than any other subs. For Jimmy John, the roast beef is so chewy that you have to deal with that unforgiving perk which you don't at Larry's.
And no, I am not a paid endorser for Larry's. I am just a deaf / blind guy with a high sense of taste and touch who can actually see how good Larry can be.

You mean a crack in my head? :P

I literally go to Larrys at least 4 times a week.
It's always my go-to option if I can't decide what to eat for lunch or dinner(sometimes breakfast as I work on the Southside and the Southside Blvd and Baymeadows Blvd locations are open during breakfast hours).
I've never been to a Jersey Mikes, but this sounds like good news. I'm still missing Gibbs on Riverside...:(
QuoteAlso, how fresh and good quality the meat it is from Boar's Head.
Just for clarification... Larrys does not use Boars Head meats. They actually use a higher quality brand.

As a metro resident with deep roots in Ortega I'm quite happy with the location in the Fairfax area. I'm sure there is more traffic on Roosevelt then over on Herschel, but I would have loved to have seen them pop onto the scene in the historic streetcar business district.
Anyone reading this and wondering where the next happening spot might be, I'd rank Fairfax near the top, it has the building fabric, green space, amenities and ease of access that make for great neighborhoods not unlike Avondale, Riverside and San Marco.

I think Fairfax is already doing quite well. Not a whole lot of empty store fronts. While it doesn't have the bar scene that the King Street District does, it does have a lot of different types of businesses along St. Johns.
^I agree. Fairfax has been fine for years.
I own a rental in fairfax. Its a quiet bedroom community with not a hint of change or desire to be anything else. If the area ever becomes "happening" ill die of shock. Despite the economic downturn the "happening" areas will be riverside which is already blossoming and springfield. riverside was healthy enough to overcome the economics, springfield was in a much weaker position so the downturn has stunted its growth. When lending picks up so will it. North san marco also is undervalued at this time and is prime for remergence.
There is a sign up now on the old Travis gym turned bagel shop. It's called Bagel Love.
Bagel Love has been in the works for a while. Not sure when he is opening though.

Well I was there right before closing (Sunday) so there wasn't a lot of people in there at that time. A few though.
I was going to stop in for lunch on Friday, and the line was out of the door. I think I may let the dust settle a bit.
Besides, I still have Larry's waaaayyyyy up on a pedestal, and I'm not looking to dethrone the king. ;D
Go online, pick your stuff and how you want it, and then phone it in. We did that on Friday and it was ready for me when I got there, even though the place was packed and the line was out the door.
Jersey Mikes does a good job with subs. I'm only so-so about Larrys.
I'm not a huge fan of Larry's, however I don't dislike it. But i would really consider Jersey Mike's to be more similar to Jimmy Johns (which I drove by the new location yesterday and they are making quite a bit of progress).
I gotta check out Jersey Mike's pretty soon, that Big Kahuna sounds good. I guess I'm the only one to think that Jimmy John's is overrated, I was just like 'eh'. I'm more of a 'hot sub' guy, and JJ's doesn't have any, maybe that's why I'm not wild about them; JJ's is the only sub franchise I know that don't have hot subs. IMO Firehouse, and Larry's are solid. I've been hearing good things about Publix subs, gotta check them out.
Jimmy Johns sucks!!! The bread is awful. The meats are no different than Subway meet. And WORSE off, they NEVER EVER get your order right. I'd rather them take 10 extra seconds to get your sub right. All you're really doing is paying a higher price for subway-style meat and subs. At least with Subway(gross) you pay less and don't get your order messed up.
Larrys is awesome(I eat there about every other day). Firehouse would be a close second. Plus, they are both 'local'.
I really, really like Jersey Mikes (and it's closer to my house than Larrys), however Larrys offers superior meats and has more 'hot' sandwich options than does JM's.
That being said, Jersey Mikes will be cutting into my Larrys consumption.
#1 Jersey Mikes
#2 Firehouse
#3 Larrys
#4 Subway
I may have missed a few spots like Publix or Quiznos, so I can't say that Jimmy Johns would be #5. But I would put it at or near the bottom, or maybe tied down there with Stans in San Marco.
Jersey Mikes isn't super-great, but now that it's here it's the best in town.
Jersey Mike's!!! That means job opportunities! Let's all celebrate the arrival of Jersey Mike's at the landing like we did 7-Eleven!!!
I left off the Pinegrove Market in Avondale. They also have very good sandwiches, probably better than Larry's or Firehouse, maybe even better than Jersey Mikes.

Yeah but. $15 for a large Cuban, bag of chips and a drink..... It's awesome food, but a tad on the pricey side for sandwiches.
I don't think I'll ever go to Whiteway again - same pricepoint, less quality.
I wouldn't really put Pine Grove in the same classification as those other places. Jersey Mikes, Firehouse, Larry's etc. are basically fast food sandwich shops. Pine Grove I would consider more of a (non fast food) restaurant since they have more than just sandwiches. That being said, I like Pine Grove very much.

I wonder if the reception to Jersey Mike's would be different if it were opening at the St Johns Town Center and not on Roosevelt.

Maybe. If the one's celebrating lived near SJTC instead of near the Roosevelt location. Why cheer on something I'll never visit?
Much like I don't think I'd get too excited over an Aston Martin Dealership opening up in 5 points. yay. :D

Jersey mikes would get lost in the crowd over there at the town center. Roosevelt Blvd is due for something like this.
I was there friday..... meh.
If I had to describe my meal in one word: Blimpies.
From the way the meat & veggies are sliced to the oil-vinegar flavoring to the bread. It screamed Blimpies all the way.
And it's not that I hate Blimpies, it's just not in my top 5. That being said, I will definitely go back to try one of their hot subs and the roast beef. They looked delicious, but for my first comparison I had to put them up against my go to sandwich - Turkey and Bacon.
I went there last week and it was decent. Reminded me of sandwiches my dad I and I used to make on Saturday afternoons. Ours were better, but just the memories being brought back were worth the trip. I live less than a mile away, so I'm going to give the menu a more thorough examination before I make an opinion, but it wasn't bad.
Jersey Mikes > Blimpie
UGH!
JM's Big Kahuna Cheese Steak is very good; It has grilled onions, red peppers, mushrooms, jalapenos, and extra chesse. IMO Bongiorno's Philly Steak Shop (on Mayport Road in front of the Naval Exchange/commissary) has the best cheesesteaks in Jax; It doesn't get too much more authentic than that.
The hot subs looked awesome. As did the roast beef. I'll be back, for sure, just not for a turkey sub.
The cold subs were never a big draw for me when I've been in Jersey Mikes' elsewhere.
The chipotle steak sub is good(and BIG).
My only problem with Jersey Mikes thus far is that their hot sub menu is miniscule compared to Larrys.
JM is still squarely in 3rd place on my chain sub list.
QuoteBongiorno's Philly Steak Shop
Interesting.. will have to try that out! Thanks. I like Philly's Finest and Beachside Seafood in Jax Beach for a philly.

My wife is from Southish Florida and loves Jersey Mike's. I've had it quite a few times over the years. Definitely agree that the hot subs are where its at. The bread might be its biggest competitive advantage though.
Ill take Jacksonville based Firehouse Subs any day.
I don't know- Firehouse has gone waaaaaay down in quality (and size) in my opinion. We used to go there pretty frequently but since they've started expanding, the subs are about half the size they used to be (at the same price) and the ingredients just don't seem as fresh.

Just had them Wed. and I hadn't noticed. They're supposed to weigh the meat, maybe you just had a lazy sandwich artist(TM).
Jersey Mikes is just OK, nothing special IMO. I still prefer firehouse and publix:)

I agree. The quality and consistency of Firehouse has faltered over the past couple years in my opinion. These issues combined with the Larry's on Roosevelt having a drive thru has made me pass on Firehouse often.

Firehouse is falling victim to what every chain falls victim to: mass expansion, more investors, more franchisees. The instant you move from "small local chain all sourced from the same place & owned by a few guys" to "holy shit we have a board and a group of investors and locations from Puerto Rico to Utah," you're definitely going to see some skimming on quality, size, and taste. Even Larry's, which hasn't expanded to 1/10th of what Firehouse has done, is experiencing it.
I'm sold on this place on the cheesesteaks alone.
Back to the main topic: A manager at the newly opened Jersey Mike's San Marco location says they should be opening up on the Southside (Tinsletown) within a few months.
Jersey Mikes closed down their location in San Marco. Didn't renew their lease effective September 16th (If I remember the sign correctly) No Jersey Mikes, no Subway, sandwich options are on the light side lately. Thankfully we have Larrys & Firehouse still, but I do partake in subway when i'm eating light. Over-saturation i suppose?
That location was typically busy. A bit slow service-wise at times but busy.
Don't forget Jimmy Johns just down the street from Jersey Mikes.
I will miss that location, as the next closest to me is Roosevelt. Sad to see them go.
Jimmy Johns is down there with subway in my opinion, but their quick service does keep me going there more often than mediocre ol' subway. I'm a little biased against cold sandwiches i suppose. I usually just bring them from home if I want to eat a cold sandwich, and use publix's /boarshead deli meat.
But yeah, a cheesesteak was calling my name today on my lunch break and I was bummed for about 10 seconds. Firehouse rose to the occasion though.
Both Subways in San Marco are closed now?
I would love for Potbelly to finally come to Florida.
For the sandwich crowd, Publix in San Marco is going to be a godsend. Their deli counter surpasses most of the name-brand sub places.
I know right? From where i'm at on Riverside ave it's quicker to hop over the Acosta and get off on Hendricks for lunch than it is to deal with 5 points/ or fight the gaunlet of traffic lights on Riverside ave. I'm looking forward to that new publix.

The one at Hendricks & Atlantic is. That's twice in the last week i've driven to either place to discover they're closed. The other one down by University & San Jose is still open.
There's another one on Hendricks across the street from Kitchen on San Marco.
Ah, didnt know there was a subway there. is it like one of those chik-fil-a Baptist visits where you need to park in a 5 story garage and walk over?
Eitherway, subway I can do without. It's a once every few months type visit for me. Jersey Mikes will be missed.
I've never been in there but I remember including it on one of the urban construction updates a year or two ago.
It's in the Reid building near San Marco Boulevard and Nira St. It has a street entrance but it's easy to miss because its in a pretty unsuspecting location.
The Daily's made to order hoagies are decent. Of course, they will be blown away once Wawa shows up.
I would imagine Panera and Jimmy Johns ate into Jersey Mike's business. Mike's is undeniably better quality than Jimmy Johns, but JJs is so fast that Mike's was always my sub place of last resort (maybe ahead of Firehouse).
