Just wanted to start giving folks a heads up that there will be a new disc course opening up right downtown in Klutho Park starting at W. 2nd Street and Blvd. Behind FSCJ. The City gave permission for the installation but unfortunately didn't have any funds to pay for it so we are raising the money ourselves through individual donations and hole sponsorships. We are very, very close to having the money to order the 18 baskets from Innova. If you are interested in finding out more... please check out our website! www.springfielddiscgolf.com
It is a public park and it will be free to play! Everyone is welcome to come and have some fun!
great project! Klutho park is such a great asset to the neighborhood and anything to improve it is great!
Sweet.
Great job! I think our local kid-friendly programs could benefit from the fitness and team play as well: Pax Karate on Walnut, Boys and Girls Club on E. 10th, Kennedy Center on Ionia, The Bridge on Pearl/9th Street.
Appreciate the asset this will be to the community and the park.
Thanks for all your hard work on this!
I sincerely hope the area across Broad/Boulevard street isn't being utilized. According to JSO, this area is not safe. I don't know much about disk golf or those who play, but I would not play over there.
Great news for Springfield and for downtown!!

The city doesn't have funds because they don't care about this park, even for general maintenance.
I'm not trying to be a party pooper & this is good news, but haven't you guys noticed the major fire ant infestation in this very area you're talking about?? They're swarming everywhere you look. So wouldn't the money best be used to get the park in some kind of decent shape first??
Again, not trying to be a bummer, but its a real problem. No one's going to play disc golf if they're being eaten by blood thirsty ants. Its the worst of any park I've ever seen.
The only thing that will keep you safe over there is an armed escort!!! Good luck and be sure to arm yourself heavily! If JSO says it isn't a safe area then I wouldnt take the chance!!!
I can't believe the city would agree to allow this!!!

Well thats how an area becomes safe. When positive use starts happening in a place it pushes away the negative. Thanks for giving an even better reason to utilize the area, but if Springfielders took to heart the opinion of random cops on 'safety', then there wouldnt be any beautiful parts of the neighborhood at all.
I would avoid the Town Center parking lot, if I were worried about safety, btw.
Its much more dangerous.
Those blood thristy ants are everywhere in Florida. EVERYWHERE!
Since arriving and living part-time in Jax since 2007, I've learned that Jacksonville is not very progressive (surprise) as compared to other large cities of its size. A lack of downtown revitalization and vibrancy stifles any growth: disc golf in the park will bring new folks into our hood. "If you build it they will come." Those serious golf folk with teams who participate in tournaments. Cool stuff.
Sometimes I am glad folks think Springfield is such a scary and unsafe place. That way, those of us that live there can keep it all to ourselves. LOL. Some of my best adventures in travel have come from visiting "scary" places. One of my favorites was venturing into the Bronx before a Yankees game and picking up homemade dinner in one of the local deli/liquor stores. There are places in East Los Angeles that have the BEST eateries that I'm sure most outside of its hood would not dare venture into. You miss out. I don't like missing out. Life is too short!
And Stephen is right: positive use pushes away negative.
Never said Springfield was scary. Just that area that isnt used by the upstanding citizens of Springfield.
Good luck...
You described that area as "scary" and needing an armed escort. It is these perceptions that stifle growth. But it is all good. There are plenty of areas in Jacksonville and other cities I would not venture into if I was not familiar either. No need to be naiive and put yourself (myself) into a situaton that could cause harm. It cost the city nothing (to my knowledge) just the parks giving it a nod of approval. Talk about initiative on the part of a Springfield resident and other interested golf folk!
Springfield is not a neighorhood for everyone. Downtown is not for everyone. There are indeed issues, no doubt; many of the negative ones I would love to see move to positive attibutes of our city. However, the forsight to bring disc golf to a magnificent park in Springfield and on the edge of downtown is to be commended. Personally, my experience of Springfield and the downtown area is one of peace. Peace and quiet, pleasant and kind people: from all socio-economic backgrounds. In life, it (Springfield) has been one of my true serendipitious finds.

Not..like..this. I dare anyone to stand on the outer parameter on Boulevard between 2nd & 3rd streets & see how long they last. My guess is 30 seconds to a minute before they get you.
Look, I'm all for improvements like disc golf & stuff like that, but there's bigger fish to fry IMO. I think there's a reason why this park is generally deserted, and maintenance probably has a lot to do with it. Safety could be another, but I've never noticed anything unsafe over there. But I've sure as hell noticed the unkempt look, the sludge in the fountain & the ants gnawing on my legs.
All I'm saying is, don't be surprised if no one uses this course because of the unaddressed issues. I'll leave it at that.
Peeing:
Sounds like someone could make an Alfred Hitchcock type film: FIREANTS
Reminiscent of THE BIRDS.
Top it off with a sequel similar to Agatha Christie's AND THEN THERE WERE NONE using the same title, NONE of course referring to the people eaten by the fireants. LOL.
I will agree Jax is not good at upkeep. But I will bet (but I'm broke) that the disc golf folks will play a part in park upkeep in that area. Just my thought.
I teach over at the Bridge. I will definitely be walking my kids over to partake in this experience. It's amazing how small outings like this can broaden a kid's mind and change his or her trajectory. I'm excited about yet another Springfield addition. Kind of jealous it's not at Willowbranch or Riverside Park :)
This is the perfect location for it. It will bring new and positive life to that section of Springfield. It will help downtown. It is a great thing.
You have to be adventurous to do anything of substance. Setting up this place is a wonderful idea.
Think of what folks said about the dog park before it opened! Not the best section of Springfield either and now the dog park attracts folks from all over the city.
I'm not sure what upkeep is not being done....the park is always mowed, and aside from the issues with the creek, what more is supposed to be done and isn't? Plus, the neighborhood helps to keep it clean.
As far as safety issues, unless you're out there at night, there really aren't any. It's more of an issue that some of the unsavory folks are known to come from the housing over there, committing crimes in our neighborhood, and that's generally been during the night.
Fire ants are everywhere, and I don't really see that as an obstacle either.
This is a great means in which the neighborhood will have another use of the park, and will be open to others from outside of the neighborhood, to come and enjoy it.
I think the park is mowed frequently enough, and I am not sure what you can do about fire ants in the park. The one thing that keeps annoying me is the trash under the bridges. (well. maybe I need to go there and pick it up this weekend).
The park is safe as far as I am concerned. I am regularly walking the dog there on my way to the dog park, on either site of Hogans creek. I think it comes back to the old "use it or loose it" theory: If you don't use the park, someone else will. The dog park mentioned above is a great example. One of the guards once told me how that area was a big problem. The park was not used, and hard to cover for the guard patrolling Confederate Park. But with the dog park, all the vagrant trash and drug use issues they had went away by itself as the park was now used for good.
Go disc golf!
I think it's amazing that this once proud park system is finally getting attention, and even better that this spark is being driven by private citizens/organizations... and people are still complaining about it.
Anyone up for a Hogans Creek cleanup this Saturday? We are hosting one, at 9AM. Meet behind the fire station(behind the Winn Dixie) at the corner of Beaver and Washington. Hopefully we have enough people where we'll have enough boots on the ground stretching all the way down the creek basin.

Exactly! I take my dog to Klutho park every day and have not had a problem - fire ants are in specific ant hills, so just look where you put your feet!
I love how people who don't live in Springfield want to comment on the park's use/safety. That park IS used and it IS safe. Springfield has lots of events over there. With kids.
Also, the disc golf is umbrella-ed under Sustainable Springfield (more healthy living - yeah!). We will be contributing some of the Blue Foundation Grant money we received from the Childhood Obesity Coalition to help with the construction and to form a youth league. I will get the ages for the youth league and post them so that anyone who has/knows kids who may want to particpate can.

The park gets used. Again those of us who actually LIVE in Springfield go to events there and use the park. good grief. why would we want to put disc golf into a place where we feel unsafe? That doesn't even make sense.

Despite what others may say, this is a huge plus for the Urban Core! I thoroughly excited and I don't even play golf.
Understandbly there are saftey concerns no matter what city park you are in...albeit Jacksonville or any other city in this country. I've played disc golf all over the US and some areas are very undesirable. Based on what I have read, and what I have seen at Klutho, there are some concerns for safety where CCINJAX mentioned. However, from my experience, play in a group and never near dusk. I personally will give the course 6 months before I go out there... just want to be sure it's safe.
As for Willowbranch park.. would be a great opportunity for another course in Jacksonville. If you are serious about having a course installed, contact your Councilman and express your concerns.
We need more courses in Jacksonville!!!
I may not live there, but I have been to the park on numerous occassions. I have even provided feedback regarding the design and installation of the Disc Golf Course.
Don't hesitate to ask any questions of me... I will answer to the best of my ability.
Quotecuriouser and curiouser.
way to call it Stephen :)
I'm glad to see there is interest in the disc golf course. I'm actually helping an old creative director of mine create a logo/map/score card for this and I think it will be a great addition to Hogans Creek.
Having lived in Clearwater, there were a few Disc Golf course I would frequent with friends and I've always wondered why there aren't more disk golf courses here in Jacksonville.
Anyways, once it's built I highly recommend getting yourself a disc and playing some holes, it's a fun game.
Just for everyones info.........the Old Bay Meadows Golf has a "Disc Golf Course" on it currently! Some how Frisbee Dan convinced DR Horton into leasing some of the property to him for a small fee. Not sure about the hours but will try and find out when I return first of next week!

Yeah yeah, Im an outsider so I dont know what I'm talking about. Got it. :-\
Listen, Im practically over in this area several times a week, for no other reason but to just to hang out because I like the area & to support local businesses. Am I some kind of expert on all things Springfield?? No, no I'm not. But aside from the occasional baseball game or event, I never see anyone using this park for anything. I see joggers running around it occasionally (but thats not really "using" the park). If I go over to Memorial or any of the other parks scattered throughout Riverside, San Marco or Avondale, there's ALWAYS people in them. Always. Can you really say that about Klutho??
So what I see & what you see might be totally different. I'm only telling you what I notice with frequency. But if you say there's people then I guess there's people. Just like there's no ant problem. ;)
I think the residents of springfield will really grow the love the sport that is so dear to us. It is a great way to get a little exercise, spend time with friend, enjoy being outside etc. You will find that disc golfers in general are enthusiasts, leaving the parks little cleaner than they found it, and always willing to share their sport with others.
I have participated in many ridealongs with officers in zone one on many occasions, Springfield is not a dangerous place to be. It has many of the types of crime that occurs in many parts of our city.
The klutho course design as recently posted will be a great recreational course for local amateur golfers. I am sure the local kids will truly enjoy spending their days in the park. An 18 hole course could easily hold 90 golfers at any time.
After the course is installed, we hope that the local club will be willing to work with us to put on a tournament or two, keeping in mind that our annual event brings in approximately 150 -200 people each day. With this additional course we could double - very exciting!
Congratulations Springfield.

Ant Problem??? compared to Ed Austin District II Regional Park where the Fore Palms disc golf course is located... Klutho doesn't have an ant problem... heck.. if Klutho had the ants Fore Palms had, the park would look like it was moving all the time!!! LOL
Well, PSU, you must not spend much time in the large San Marco parks that are most like Klutho Park.
I'm currently a dual resident of San Marco and Springfield - I'm completing restoration of my new (old) Springfield home and can't WAIT to be in Springfield full time. I walk my dogs in both Confederate / Klutho Parks in Springfield and in Alexandria Oaks Park (formerly known as FEC Park) in San Marco. I always see more neighbors in Confederate and Klutho Parks than I do in Alexandria Oaks, which is often deserted.
As far as safety goes, I've never had any issues in or near Klutho Park - and I've walked its length and breadth, even crossing over Hogan's Creek to walk down to the tennis courts in Durkeeville.
Fire ants? Yes, they are everywhere. Never been attacked by any in Klutho Park but I've seen an entire team of seven year old soccer players taken down by ants in Willowbranch Park back when I lived in Avondale.
But back to the point of this thread: Springfield is getting the first urban disc golf course in Jacksonville, thanks to a dedicated group of residents.
Right on!

Bay Meadows doesn't have any hours... there is an Honesty Box there... so donate when you tee off! if you want more info, I have attached a link to a course map at Bay Meadows.. one of the signature holes is a 955 foot hole that is a par 5. This course isn't for the faint of heart or recreational golfer!!! With that being said, it's a great design and I enjoy the diversity it brings to Jax in Disc Golf!!!

I blame FBC...
Ok... I've seen the proposed layout and it seems like it will be a great course for the local residents of Springfield. Very short and easily navigated. Other than a few holes that would lend towards discs going into the streets.. overall, it's a perfect for the beginner and recreational golfer.
With that being said, has there ever been consideration to install a 9 hole course with two sets of tee pads so that it plays as an 18 hole course? check out this course in Orlando http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=4413 (http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=4413) It is a great example of utilizing a small area for 9 incredible holes! I felt as though I was playign 18 different holes with the different locations of the tee pads. Another benefit would be according to http://www.springfielddiscgolf.com (http://www.springfielddiscgolf.com), you already have enough money raise to purchase and install 9 baskets and two sets of tee pads!!!
Just a thought.. either way Congrats Springfield!!!
Ok... Based on all the posts... I will concede that maybe disk golf will be a positive impact on that area.

We considered 9 holes and have decided against it. We have a fantastic 18 hole course going in and we look forward to working with River City on a tournament or two! Would love to see them add our course to their league play as well. Perhaps if we get enough people we can stomp out the fire ants!!
I can't wait to play..i suck at it but it should be fun....
The youth league will be for ages 6+. We will have a Disc Golf Clinic in October to teach kids how the game is played. They can sign up there for the initial youth league. The kids in the League will meet once a week for 4 weeks to work on their skills with a Youth Tournament at the end. We hope this initial youth league will lead to a growing program next Spring. The cost for the League will be $20. The fee will go to the youth director to pay him for his time in coaching and organizing the tournament. We will be offering scholarships to kids who can't afford the $20. If you or your business would like to provide a $20 scholarship, email SustainableSpringfield@yahoo.com.
Sustainable Springfield is AWESOME!!!!
This is really exciting news. Maybe some drink and hotdog vendors will migrate to this are becuase of this. Congrats on getting this started
oh don't get me excited about possible food truck vendors - LOVE them :)
We are working on a vendor!
Oh man, a food truck would be awesome.
I remember at one of the courses in Clearwater there was a lady who sold new and used discs as well as the ones she recovered from a water hazard. If only she sold tacos as well...

Hey Kim, it's Jack... Actually League play is course specific. So the league at Fore Palms is something that is scheduled for Sunday Mornings. Springfield would have to set up their own league. With that being said, that doesn't mean players who play at Fore Palms will probably frequent the Springfield League. I'm sure you will see an influx of Amateur and Recreational Golfers because from what I've seen of the layout, it levels the playing field.
Willow branch park would be another excellent location. I wonder how people will use the disc golf park? I am think it will be a weekend activity.

Wow... paying someone to coach kids in disc golf??? WOW!!!
I played in lots of youth leagues growing up and it is very commmon the pay a registration fee. The person we have to help establish and manage the youth league has his own business here in Springfield working with local youth. That is what he does. He is not just coaching. He is going to be establishing and managing the league as it develops. He has been working with the youth here in Springfield for some time and has an excellent reputation for not only coaching kids in sports and athletics but teaching them life skills as well. This is his business that he does 7 days/week.
Stop trying to find something to complain about. Just accept there is going to be another disc golf course in town. Springfield has gone out of its way to work with Rivercity and it is clearly evident you don't want to work to build a network of disc golf courses in town unless you are in charge of them all. Competition is a good thing and its great for people to have lots of options to choose from.
You sound like a whiny kid not an adult. That's boaring and I am sick of reading your posts about it. There's another disc golf course being built and that is great news for that sport in NE Florida. end of story. stop drumming up negative drama.

Its pretty obvious you have no clue about the positive activities going on in Springfield. A majority is volunteer but some things require paying people for their time.
Would you perhaps want to volunteer YOUR time to manage this process? It goes beyond showing kids how to throw a frisbee.

No complaints... just very surprised! I've never been associated with any youth league that paid their staff!!!
As for your negative comments... please be sure to get your facts straight before you post. Not sure who you are or care to know who you are.
With all that being said, I think the youth league is awesome. However paying someone to organize that league is not at all what Disc Golf or Disc golfers are all about!!! Look at all the FREE clinics RCDGA has provided over the past years. Look at all the money donated to Charity over the past few years... all that with Volunteers!!! Yes... I repeat Volunteers!
Good luck to Springfield Disc Golf, I wish them well.
By the way.. here is some drama for you... ask Kim how the councilman in your area pushed through the approval for your course in Springfield.... It was by the request of the Executive Director of RCDGA calling in a favor ... not by anything Springfield or any organizers there has done.

I have and I do on a regular basis volunteer my time. I have organized and instructed every Scouting clinic RCDGA has provided the past couple years... at no cost to the participant.
With that being said, I see no problem with an individual getting paid to instruct disc golf... but call it what it is... it is an instructor soliciting his service... dont' call it a youth league. Additionally... so out of that $20 per youth, how much of that is going toward prizes at the tournament at the end?
Just got word of the great baskets that will be installed at Klutho!!! These are the best and most visible baskets made!!!!!!

The baskets look well made. Dont worry i know many people in springfield and they arent all as crabby. Thank you for whatever support you gave because it all helps. I dont know if I will use the course but I know people that will. Now a course at willowbranch park would be positive addition too

First of all, neither AVS or anyone for that matter said it was scouts, they said a
youth league, which are two different things...so you jumping in to say how the scouts were taught for free is irrelevant and your argument is without merit. The general tone of your posts are negative, and is more in line with sour grapes on your behalf.
Trying to make it seem that it's so unheard of for kids sports to have paid registration....take a look at the football and baseball leagues, those registration fees are very high. It's also irrelevant as to any trophies or how they would be funded. Again, you show an ignorance of the subject area.
Just as it doesn't matter whether Gaffney was supportive to Kim's request or you "calling in your favor"...it really doesn't. All you're doing is making an effort to try and discredit Kim and our hard work in getting this course approved and in place, and make yourself out to be our saving grace. Well guess what...we're making it happen, and we're doing it in spite of your efforts to insult, undermine and belittle our hard work. We'll have our course in place.

My guess is that Springfield provides a natural selection unavailable to the general woosiness of living in the fat suburbs, and that rhyno and his crew would most likely be handed an easy ass thumping.
indeed.

I never said it's unheard of for having a youth league pay for registration... I get that... I've been part of many youth leagues as child and as unpaid volunteer. Maybe it's semantics here... maybe I'm all caught in the fact it's being called a youth league... when in reality it's not really a youth league if you pay someone to coach... call it what it is... it's like paying for Karate or Gymnastics classes... or Competitive Cheerleading. So call it Disc Golf instruction for kids... that seems more fitting... In actuality I guess it doesn't matter what you call it... as long as the kids out there and playing... AWESOME. I will be sure to solicit the kids on the other side of Klutho where the wooden bridge was torn down and let them know about the "FREE Scholarships" that are being offered to those who can't afford to participate. I know when we first went out there to look at that property, those kids were full of questions and wanted to play. I commend Springfield on offering that assistance to them.
In regards to my ignorance, you truly don't know me nor my intellect... I can same the same for you... I don't know you nor your intellect... I have not, nor will I ever state my opinion by belittling or name calling on this forum or any other forum.
I do wish Springfield Disc Golf the best of luck with this course. It is something that is needed for the Park. Kim's passion and drive for installing this course are unprecedented from someone who has never played the game before. I commend her on her efforts.
Springfielder, I wish for you to find peace in your life as well... hopefully the parked filled with disc golfers will do this for you.

It is pretty unseemly for a competitor operation to spend time on a public forum talking about how bad the neighborhood is, how sub par the instruction is, how the whole damn thing in general is just no damned good.
I suppose when the time comes, we will just have to see which team is made of the better stuff after all the chest thumping is finished.
My guess is that Springfield provides a natural selection unavailable to the general woosiness of living in the fat suburbs, and that rhyno and his crew would most likely be handed an easy ass thumping.
But then again, one supposes that they would have to be brave enough to venture the wilds of the springfield badlands, which theyve already said that they dont have the personal courage to do.
Stephendare... you crack me up!!! I look forward to seeing the residents of Springfield utilize the new disc golf course! Hey... GREAT NAME for the Disc Golf course!!! Springfield Bandlands!!!! That is awesome!!!!

Um....if you had actually read my post, then you would've noticed that I said ignorance on the subject, I didn't call you, per say, ignorant...and I stand by what I said. You jumped in to try and belittle what was called as a proposed youth league, and that there's a registration fee...saying how that's unheard of, etc.. I wanted to explain that it's not unheard of, as you suggested, even though you tried using scouts as an example, which I'll say again, is completely different.
I didn't try to belittle anything... I called it like I saw it... I have never been associated with any organization that pays a coach unless it is like I stated... Karate, Competitive Cheerleading or gymnastics of some sort... but they aren't called youth leagues now are they?
It's all semantics... call it what you may... just get the kids out to play! Ultimately that's all that matters right?
I would much rather prefer this discussion in person then in this medium... written text doesn't allow for the ability to qualify any statement until after the other person has responded... at least in person you would have known that my only goal was to understand why someone was being paid to teach disc golf to kids. Now that I see it really isn't a youth league I understand completely.
I do wish all of you well with this endeavor. It would be great to see disc golf in Klutho.
To Ccinjax,
As the chair of the Springfield area's Sheriff's Advisory Council, I'm a little concerned about your note that "According to JSO, this area is not safe." I'm not aware that JSO has designated this area as having any special safety problems. I'd kind of like to get a little clarification on what JSO is saying to you. Can you help me on this? Can we start with, who at JSO is saying this?
Doug Vanderlaan
The more activity at parks like this helps make them safer. This course can only do good.
I certainly agree, acme. Confederate Dogpark has shown that very clearly.

It brings people from all over the city. I love talking to the dog owners and finding out where they live.
The dog park really was a great addition. I take my dog there and I won't know a single person. Also happens to me at Uptown all the time. I love seeing all the new people coming to Springfield. I am sure the disc golf course will do the same thing!
This is the first time I have looked at metro since last week. LOL

Indeed!
I haven't been on in a while. Can anyone provide me with an update on the course? We had had a few inquiries.
Thank you!
My news years resolution....Start playing Frisbee Golf again. I have friends on the street facing the band pavillion...... plenty of parking.
Just got to get some more discs.
My son and I played the course last week. Loads of fun. First time playing disc golf. Looking to get some disc catchers installed at Alexandria Oaks Park (formerly FEC Park) in San Marco.
Or just come on over and enjoy our beautiful Klutho Park again, Doug. :-) It's free.
Trust me, we will. And will continue to support the Springfield restaurants while we do. I love the neighborhood.
